Round of 16 | Romania vs Netherlands | Austria vs Turkey

He was the one who picked the team.

He should have picked better attackers and better system.

They also conceded two goals from set pieces. He didn't drill the set pieces enough.

How the feck would you know that? For all we know they could’ve trained nothing but set pieces for four days in a row.

Which better attackers he should’ve picked?

Arnautović is the worst striker I have ever seen. So pretty much any other striker in the world would do.

That’s because you haven’t seen the rest of Austria’s strikers. He can’t pick strikers from the rest of the world.

Very difficult save to make. The attacker heads the ball towards the post you’re moving away from and directs it downwards. It takes special reflexes to reach the ball with your hand.

Many regard this Schmeichel’s finest save. Some similarities for sure.

Amazing!

So, the only traditionally top team not to reach the QF is Italy? France, Portugal, Spain, Germany, England and the Netherlands are through.

Of the top of my head, I don’t recall a tournament like this recently.
Also Croatia. They are below the teams you mentioned, but above everyone else historically. I wouldnt call Portugal a traditionally top team either, before winning Euro 2016 they and Croatia were around similar level. Even after 2016 they are only slightly ahead - Croatia hasnt won anything but they got to the WC final something Portugal never did.

Obviously a good save, however:

He's lucky that it's such a lofted ball, meaning it's difficult to direct it with power. Heading it into the ground also means less pace and the ball is already traveling upwards so less force is needed to direct it away from goal.
Imagine denigrating that save. Jesus.

I'm sorry for Austria, they gave their all. Inspired game by Turkey, they disrupted the way Austria plays with their quick coming out of the block and counters and they were constantly dangerous. In the second half Austra layed siege and if it werent for an absolutely miraculous save by the Turkish keeper we would have seen OT. Poor Baumgarten, he saw the ball in the net, hell we all saw it.

Where are all the Ronaldo haters now?

Ronaldo is still a top striker in this game when you look at this dreadful performance from Austrian forwards.

Another one of Ronaldo haters Rangnick humiliated.

I managed to catch the second half of Austria-Turkey in its entirety on replay earlier and that took a ton out of Turkey. Unless they conjure up something inspirational against Holland on Saturday I can't see them progressing any further.

Just gutted - team should have gone deeper in this tournament. Terribly sad to see the end of the Alaba/Arnautovic era which basically brought Austrian football back from the grave. Hate to lose to Turkey, with all the rivalry and crowd elements that entail. Still absolutely cannot believe that save.

Yeah, you gave your all in the 2nd half but werent clinical enough. Saying that it all could have ended differently if Turkish keeper hadnt made that save (which is normal one according to some here). It will haunt Baumgarten for a good while.

Any talk about banning Demiral for the rest of the tournament yet or do we just not care about fascist saluts anymore?

There's nothing wrong with identifying with your roots and origins more than the country you live in now. You can be raised a certain way with the customs, cultures and practices from one country even if you live elsewhere. If anything you hang on to it more strongly quite often.

Don't worry, you didn't need to justify yourself. It was a stupid point he made (if you can even call it a point)

Yeah, I deleted that part as it didn't get the point across and was poorly worded. Obviously, there's nothing wrong with feeling connected to your roots and culture. Sorry if it was offensive in any way.

What I meant is more about living in a cultural bubble abroad and not feeling any connection to the country you live in after a few generations, which sometimes seems to be the case.

You seem to know a lot about the lives of other people who you probably know nothing about.

The save was good but Pickford makes saves like that most weeks for Everton. The magnitude of it makes it a better save than it actually is.

Oh, come on, I see it regularly and it can be a problem at times. Ignoring it doesn't make it go away...

But that's more for a political thread than this one.

What happened?
Demiral showed the Grey Wolves salute after scoring. The grey Wolves are a right wing organisation responsible for multiple murders around the world, especially targeting Kurds.

Celebrating Turkey win doesnt mean not feeling any connection to the country you live in.
I mean it sometimes happen, that cultural bubble, but your first point was about Turkish people feeling connection to their country and celebrating Turkey win. Living somewhere for a 3rd generation doesnt mean they stopped being Turks.

That shot was 0.94(xGOT). It's an utterly stupendous save. https://x.com/xGPhilosophy/status/1808244155526844918

Demiral celebrating with the gray wolves salute, a Turkish organisation classed as right wing extremist by German authorities (and I assume others)

Demiral being his normal huge POS self. Big surprise there. Not the first time, and won't be the last. (in fact that Gray Wolves salute he used last night is a criminal offense in Austria)

What exactly do you see regularly?

Oh after this post I hope Turkey destroy you. Let the Dutch Turks paint the town red!

They probably will

That's not really the point I was trying to make and a discussion for another thread. What I am taking issue with here is their football supporters are going around acting like cnuts by purposely polluting (I mean mainly in noise but come to think of it also in emissions as they're getting in their vehicles just for the sake of making noise with horns and loud exhausts) entire cities after they win and are actively breaking the law by doing so. I lived in the city centre here for 5 years (moved away two years ago thankfully) and can recall being kept up by these antics until deep in the night. It's just not acceptable.

Demiral will get a ban surely? Doing fascist salutes is a bit uncool.

Austria played like excitable puppies; overeager and lacking composure. Feels like their billing and weight of expectation affected them and their game.

The role of plucky underdogs, punching above their weight, rather than favourites who should go far in the competition, was more their lane in the end.

Turkey matched them for energy and aggression whilst looking considerably more classy in the final third.

I had 6 for 6 before this round, which subsequently dropped to 6/8.

Devastated. Don't know how we could lose that (well i do know we are braindead at the back). Turkey is horrible they will get obliterated against any decent side that doesn't knock themselves out. Damn there is absolutely no way we should lose that. xG 3.2 : 0.8
Just gifted the worst team of the tournament a win… we are lacking some quality players to really make the next step

Well the Dutch will have a easy game in the quarterfinals

Never knew Austrian fans were so bitter and such bad losers. The better team won fair and square. Turkey have looked better than most sides in the tournament as well so really can’t understand the rambling.

So apparently, Demiral celebrated his goal with a gesture associated by a Turkish nationalistic right wing extremist group called Grey Wolves.

For my liking, UEFA should ban him for the remainder of the tournament but I'm not even expecting a sanction. I mean, he only made a fascist festure, it's not as if he did something truly despicable like wearing a rainbow armband or something along those lines.

They banned an Albanian player for something demeaning to Serbs (I think?) earlier in the tournament.

That's hardly true. I think it's an admirable win by Turkey, but Austria failed to convert in a game were they dominated for about 80% of the game. Not saying it's unfair Turkey won of course :)

I do think (and said before the game) Austria was being vastly overrated by (barely) beating a woefull Oranje team in the game before. They are well organised, but lack any form of stand out quality. Against us they score a one in a million own goal and Sabitzer somehow scores a goal like he's prime Robben.

Don’t think anything will happen.

I will be happy when they are finally out of the tournament, however. The least likeable group of football fans I have ever witnessed. Everything has to be as extreme and aggressive as possible, with a huge element of racism and nationalism in the mix. It’s fitting that one of their fans killed someone in Berlin during their celebrations because he was speeding during an illegal motorcade. Because they have to speed as fast as possible while honking as much as possible, whenever they win anything.

The Turkish players, staff and supporters all need a collective smack for their shitty behaviour all tournament. Despicable bunch and I hope the Dutch fecking hammer them.
