Nick Powell.

I think Nick is a good young prospect with a bright future. However, someone like Barkeley seems to be a special type of talent that might be able to reach the heights of world football. I don't think you can classify Nick in the same way.

Moyes apparently didn't play Barkley enough at Everton so I am not sure Barkley will be in any hurry sign with Moyes at any time soon.

So was Barkley a box to box central midfielder today or an attacking midfielder?...I know that fellaini was doing a defensive midfield role

I really like the look of Barkley. He has great touch, two good feet, nice range of passing and scores a few.

Was delighted to see him start today. Hopefully he'll become a permanent fixture this season. Wonder if Martinez is simply braver than Moyes for trusting him or if Moyes was just being careful with a young player last season.

Well it could be partly form. Barkley was fantastic for England under 21s in the week. Also Gibson has a knock. Also Gibson is Gibson.

Put it this way, if Moyes was in charge of Everton, I think Barkley would still have started today.

He was in the AM role but he was dropping deep at times to play-make so at times he was more box to box. He had a surging run at one point where he was going past players like they weren't there.

The loan in the Championship bulked him up a shit load, his strength for his age is crazy considering how technically sound he is.

Yeh that's my thinking too. Moyes has shown he's not afraid of giving young players an opportunity.

Gibson is a great player for us, so "Gibson is Gibson" is bollocks. Plus i'd rather Osman was dropped for Gibson and we kept playing Barkley.

He got a very unfair hard time here that some don't seem to forget. I always liked him and knew he'd be a success at a good top flight side. Just perhaps not quite good enough for the very highest level is all.

Gibson is a good player, but he is really limited compared to Barkley. Could perhaps see your point on Osman though especially now you have Mirallas.

What are you on about? Do you think Osman is playing on the wing or something?

No, the point is, Barkley is a much more attacking player than Gibson. To allow for Mirallas, Pienaar, Kone, it is hard to justify Osman AND Barkley as well. Certainly it forces Fellaini into a defensive role and he was their top scorer last season!

I know that, the way i read your post made it sound like you were considering Osman was RW, apologies.

Well Fellaini is better as a CM anyway so we are fine on that front. For me our best formation will be:

--------Fellaini----Gibson---------
-------------Barkley-------------
Mirallas------Jelavic------Pienaar

Oh, there were times during the game where Fellaini and Barkley were switching in the AM role too, which was great as Norwich didn't know what was going on.

I'd say martinez wouldn't mind flogging fellaini if it meant getting mccarthy. Mccarthy, barkley and gibson would be a very interesting midfield to watch

I'd rather keep Fellaini than have McCarthy. Fellaini can offer us so much more.

Yeah, I have a feeling Everton would happily shift Fellani if they could get £20m+.

We already have Cleverley and Anderson as sick notes. I want him to play a full season at Everton with no injuries then I'd judge.

At the moment he's not what we need. We need somebody who is going to make an impact in our starting line up.

What? He had a leg break which is why Moyes was being careful with him, he's not a sick note.

What's his relationship with Moyes like?

I’m looking forward to this season more than any other,’ says Barkley. ‘There will be more opportunities for me to play.
‘People have opinions about me but not a lot know how I really play as I haven’t had that many chances. Hopefully everyone will see what I can do now. It has been a massive change this summer.
‘Every day I had been at Everton, David Moyes was there and everything I did was based around trying to impress people so they would tell him.
‘I owe (Moyes) everything. He brought me on as a player and looked after me when I had broken my leg. I was out for a while with a hernia and a broken foot, too.
‘I had tough times but I got there in the end. Now Roberto Martinez has come in and, whatever chances I get, I must take them. These are exciting times for Everton and I want to play whatever role I can.’

I try not to get caught up in waves of hype but he really looked class today, bit annoying that people start comparing him to Rooney instantly when they play completely different positions.

Can't see him going to anyone else but United when he leaves.

Another amusing thing is that the last time Barkley started in a season opener he was MOTM in that game too. Against QPR in 2011/2012.

I don't know why, but I can't get past my scepticism about him. I watched the whole game today, and I still don't feel that he's quite in the very top bracket of talent. There's a touch of the Gibsons about him - a brilliant shot, good on the ball, and strong from an early age, but without that constant 'feck, this kid is amazing' feeling you got with every single touch from someone like the young Wilshere, or Rooney.

Don't yell at me. It's very much just my opinion, and from something of a position of ignorance - I've only seen him in three or four full games.
