Rooney - Wants to stay next season

He can stay and pick up his last pay cheque but it doesn't mean Jose has to play him, though like I said he'll be useful for cup games. It's not going to cost us any more whether he stays or goes as he'll have to be paid up either way. As I said, he's not made any demands to play, tried to undermine the manager or disrupted team harmony so I don't see what the problem is. He's being true to his word by not playing for another Premier League club apart from Everton, so again fair play to him for that. I'm sure if he had decent options, he'd consider them.

So United's all time top scorer would further get degraded into a pushed around club mascot. There's some irony here that while your view is centered more around Rooney, with mine around the club, you're the one here trying to shackle Wayne, when I'm opting for freeing him up.

Terminating his contract by mutual agreement could cost us few millions less realistically speaking and he'd leave a place in the team for more promising players. We're back in the CL next season and it will along with Premier League become our priorities. Why should we choose Rooney for the cups instead of youngsters? We'll most probably neglect both domestic cup competitions so why not invest in future instead of forcing Rooney to come back from his upcoming season long vacations. There's also the matter of playing position. If not as a striker Wayne would be playing as a no. 10, again taking team or squad spot from Pereira. In 2017 I know whom I'd rather give more playing time out of Rashford, Martial, Pereira and Rooney pool of players.

I agree.

However You're making an assumption, ie that Rooney is ready to settle for some sort of paycut/reduction of the money which is owed to him. I don't think its the case. I believe that he had received some job offers but all those clubs had asked that he takes a big pay cut. Under such circumstances he might either ask United to pay the rest of his contract in full or else he'll remain at United.

Thing is that in my proposed scenario he'd earn more in the next 12 months than by simply staying with us. Another factor might be that a 32 year old Rooney will be more attractive acquisition to his potential suitors than his one year older version. Consequently right now he'd be in stronger position to sign up a contract with his new club on better terms.

And the same people are wanking themselves silly over Ronaldo's possible return and salivate over the prospect of him breaking Rooney's record for United.

It's sad that the one who DID leave appears to have more respect among United fans than the one who spent pretty much his entire top level career here.

Gee thanks Wazza, he's earned 100k PW more than he's worth for 10 years! So forget all this loyalty crap, we paid him as one of the best players in the world, whilst never being one of the best.

Not as good as Ronaldo or Messi, sure. But the revisionism regarding Rooney is insane. One would think he's been a plodder throughout his career if you read the Caf. Like some chancer who lucked out and ended up deceiving everyone for over a decade.

If he is a true red, he would do what's best for the club, which is to leave.

But he also has to take into account his personal wellbeing , and if he can't make more money elsewhere he should stay and fulfill the contract both parties agreed on. He did give his whole professional career after Everton to the club, so collecting $$$ can just be seen as a retirement bonus

He is still useful as a sub (he's no power sub though) and for cup games, or if there's an injury, etc.

As much as I'd rather see a better player that has lower wages replace him (you can find player(s) like that on almost every team in the top leagues), it isn't the end of the world to keep him. Let him collect his check and who knows, maybe he'll score some season changing goals throughout this upcoming campaign.

If Wayne was the type of person that wanted to prove the doubters wrong, he could get in the best shape he's been in of the past 5 years and try to become a great first team player again... but it's either physically impossible for him at this point or mentally he doesn't want to work hard enough for it

Never said he was a plodder , he was a very good player, but that's it.

Nobody can deny he wouldn't have earned anywhere near as much elswhere. So his loyalty is to £, which is fine, by the same token we therefore owe him no favours.

As I said, Jose is NOT obliged to play him if he stays and who said anything about shackling him?. The treatment of Schweinsteiger was unnecessary and even Jose himself admitted that he'd been out of order. There's no reason to turn on Rooney cause he's done nothing wrong. He's under no obligation to terminate by mutual agreement. If United want him to go, they just have to pay him up. If he wants to stay, he's not stupid, he'll know his playing days are numbered. As I said, I'd just as much see Carrick, Fellaini and Smalling shown the door. Rooney isn't the only player taking up valuable space within the team. If we were investing for the future, we wouldn't have given Carrick an extension...that's a completely pointless bit of business.

Except one more year of pounds as per the contract.

I once worked with a guy who was really very bad at his job and he got paid about 30% more than me and then went on to get a senior role! I felt so disheartened and under appreciated. I bet you'd feel the same if you played next to Wayne, this guy is your captain and is on obscene money.

This guy I worked with was found out and all his old projects are a lot smoother running.

I see no reason why we should put up till the pre season and subject ourselves to the same crap. We have more a lot of ground to make up. Needs to go!

I swear the guy would have struggled in the Championship based on last seasons form. His body and brain have been failing at football fo a while now. I couldn't care less if he stays for his last year as long as it doesn't hamper future planning. Clearing him and young, who are basically squad players, off the payroll would create a very attractive package for a world class player. If he does stay I can see him scoring in a semi/final or making an important contribution somewhere in the season. I would prefer him to leave though, he was too fecking sloppy last season to warrant a place.

Then that would be quite damning about Jose's judgement - but so far his actions have shown him to not really rate Rooney and even his words when it comes to him being a midfielder. If Rooney does try to see out his contract it will make it very challenging in pre-season for Jose--give him minutes or try to settle in his new signings and team?
This should be Jose's priority.
I wouldn't even take him on the pre-season tour tbh.
The problem is his presence seem to put some pressure on for us to give him minutes - which really shouldn't be the case, as we have other players who should rightfully be getting their opportunities. If the club keeps catering to him, then those in charge need to find their balls from somewhere. He's not a bigger legend than Giggs, Scholes and yet United are catering to him like there wasn't a Manchester United before Rooney - it's spineless.

He's treated United like a business, there's no way he gives a shit about what's best for the club.

The only place he's likely to leave for is Everton, if they won't pay enough to him or us then I can't blame him for staying. It's still very early in the window though.

With the fees and wages that are being thrown around now the £300k is starting to look less of a big issue anyway considering he is still one of our most marketable players.

'IF' he can get himself in peak physical condition he could still contribute to the squad. If Mourinho's comments about wanting him to stay were genuine you would think he's told him as much, he won't be picked next season unless he proves himself up to it.

Exactly.

Football is a business. Fans pay the players to entertain them through match tickets, Sky TV subscriptions and merchandise. The players are fulfilling a service, same as any other professional.

All this faux sentimentality about respect and loyalty is just an insult to our intelligence.

If true, it just reaffirms what everybody already knew, Rooney has lost the desire to compete at the highest level and would rather sit on a bench all season and get paid silly money then move to another premiership team and fight for his club and international career.

Thanks for all the years and service, now please just leave.

I never claimed we owed him anything. My original point was and still is that it's sad Ronaldo is held in higher regard and has more respect from United fans than Rooney.

And yeah, it's ironic that people who were mad at him for expressing his desire to leave are now mad at him for wanting to stay. Clearly, he's expected to put the club's interests above his own at all times even though Ronaldo was forgiven for never ever doing that. The double standard is a bit odd.

The difference is that now he wants to stay because no-one else wants him.
The offers on the table his agent talked about at the end of the season was obviously an attempt to drum up some interest in a move for him. He now sees that he cannot command a wage anywhere close to his current deal so he will likely stay and play his year out.

I don't blame Rooney at all if he wants to stay. He has a contract and is entitled to see it out. If he keeps his head down and accepts his demotion in the same fashion that he did last season then I would give him a bit of respect for that.

Scheinstiger had a contract as well , i hope no one has any complains if Capatin Fantastic gets the same treatment .

Jose isn't obliged, but it's too easy to predict that Rooney is going to take one place on the bench for the most part of next season.

Keeping Rooney at United, but not letting him play really is like putting some final nails in the coffin of his career. He won't make a meaningful come back after that. I'd like to see Wayne show some ambition, a bit of old fire to fight back. He won't be afforded such chance here because we're aiming for a higher standard. It's disputable if he can still do that, but it looks sure as hell that it won't happen here at United. Russian roulette is better than encountering a hitman while walking down the street.

I was writing late about Schweini treatment and actually I didn't mean sending Rooney to train with reserves. It was about telling him that not only he won't be playing regularly, but also that he's going to find himself out of squad. Therefore it would create a good deal of balance before the start of negotiations.

Both sides have to reach agreement regarding his contract. There's just every incentive for him to choose such solution unless Wayne now got fully possessed by the spirit of Jabba the Hut.

With Carrick it isn't ideal, though we need cover in midfield and he's still a great passer.

No way he'll get the same treatment. Would be a PR disaster. Jose has played a blinder as far as managing Rooney is concerned, so see no reason why he'd drop the ball now.

The part in bold is true, but I'm not sure what difference you refer to.

The primary observation (as I take it) was that Rooney is held in lower regard than Ronaldo by many posters on here. And the implication was that “holding the club ransom” (TM) is worse to those people than using United (and its fans) cynically in order to get a fatter contract from another club (or more general adoration, which is even worse – it's not even about money, but about ego) – on several occasions.

Which is, indeed, a bit odd – if these people are men and women of principle. And not just irrational twats, like most football fans tend to be in my experience.

Stating that you just don't like someone is honest. Stating that you don't like someone because they “held the club ransom” (TM) while at the same time pining like a love sick teenager for a player with Ronaldo's track record – is sanctimonious drivel.

And, sure, usual caveat: There may be people who condemn Rooney on principle without condoning Ronaldo's shenanigans, etc., etc.

I blame all this on Moyes for giving him such lengthy contract.

This is correct, but isn't it ironic to say this and then to see so many here insult Rooney for being 'disloyal', money grabbing cnut', etc.?

maybe we can strike a deal with him maybe 10 mil to piss off if he plans on hanging around picking up his beefy pay cheque from the bench.

typical scouser i bet if he was shit at football he would be on the dole talking shit in weatherspoons .. wait he is shit at football scrap that.

Personally for me, anything Rooney related is business since the whole contract thing.

I got emotional at Fletcher leaving, at Evra coming back for the testimonial and giving his interview, at Gary Neville retiring etc etc but I look at Rooney strictly in business terms.

It's unfortunate but it is what it is. I've not enjoyed him breaking the goalscoring record as much as I would have pre 2010, and that's a real shame.

Anyway, on that note, why should I feel like he's entitled to some respect from the club when he's clearly past his best? We're paying him top money to do a job which he's not up to these days.

It's his prerogative to want to stay and see out his contract, but that doesn't mean we should pander to him and give him undeserved minutes the rest of his time at the club. I'd rather see the likes of Pereira get his minutes over someone who clearly is not up to it anymore.

He should be frozen out completely except for super fringe games. Fecking Moyes fecked us over with this contract. As @NinjaZombie said I'd rather give minutes to the youngsters like Pereira and Harrop over Rooney at every chance.

Spot on. I'd love to have Ronaldo back because he's an incredible player, but it's an unbelievable double-standard that sees him held in a higher regard as a person than Rooney.

You answered your own question. I do believe it's in his right (debatable) to stay and see out his contract, and it seems the club (surely) and Mourinho (debatable) do agree with this. And he is entitled to some respect for what he had done for the club.

At this moment, with his stature, no one; not the club, the manager, any staffs or the fan can 'kick' Rooney out of the club. And how did he gain the stature? By playing for over a decade and scored a record number of goals for the club. You can try to taint his contribution or loyalty to the club, but the record will always be there and as long as nobody breaks it, he will be regarded as living/playing legend. Well maybe Ronaldo if he joins. I believe most do agree that he is not good enough for United anymore as the 1st eleven. But why those who don't want him here keep on insulting and recreate new history? I just can't understand any of this.

Luckily in football world today it is really about business. Because if it is still about loyalty, love of the club, etc. no one would want to come here to play again. Most who come here is because the money we pay to get him and the wage. If they come to be loved by the club and fans, they will not come if they know how some of you guys treat our own legend who is still at the club. Want him out? No problem, but show some respect though I don't really expect that from some same familiar posters who write nonsense all the time.

The club made a mistake in giving him such a long contract. Let's just let him run it down and then leave.
It's a shame that he has tarnished what was a great career with us, but I'm sure after he has gone we will remember him with more fondness. At least he isn't holding anyone back like when LvG was here.

Ronaldo "WANTS" to leave, Rooney "THREATEN" to leave.

Big difference in my eyes.

Ronaldo has threatened to leave Real Madrid many times though. What him and Rooney have done is the same thing; use their position of strength with the club to get the best deal they could. Difference being that Ronaldo is a better player, partly because of the effort he puts into training. And this is probably the main reason people blame Rooney, because of the perception that he could have done more for United since signing his contract if he took better care of himself.

Yeah, why are we happy about a currently world class player joining our team and guaranteed to score 25-30 goals per season.

Nope.. He want to leave, give us a year despite wanting to leave, he said madrid is his dream team from day 1, when the bid is on he moves.

Rooney on the other hand... Lack of quality in the team mumbo jumbo, angry and confused.

I never understood why he escaped criticism for this, when in hindsight he'd obviously decided he was going to leave:
