Would expect more from a pregnant woman that has been called to play.
Fecking embarrassing the club. My dad couldn't stop laughing.

Rather than everyone repeatedly saying how poor he is playing how about reasons as to why this may be?

He's only 30 and does have an intelligent football brain. He's also a winner with plenty of drive and determination so what's gone wrong with the rest of his game and why?

His touches are heavy and he is regularly the weak link in the breakdown of our moves. Even his shooting is weak. Literally everything falling apart for him.

I would say a combination of being heavily played from a very young age, injuries (the May 2006 and April 2010 ones stick out), a lack of dedication to keeping in shape, an unfortunate level of natural fitness, and general complacency.

Oh if Rooney starts against Leicester this place is going to go nuts. If he continues to start we seriously need a Wayne Rooney out banner flown over Old Trafford.

After last season I don't have any feelings about him starting...it is what it is. Inevitable, part of the world, etc. I can't get myself angry about it.

14 years, 700 games and he hasn't exactly been a model professional.

Plus an ankle injury and an ego which made him think he's better than he is and prevented him from evolving.

Sammy McIlroy got really upset didn't he. The guy was right though.
he was completely correct. He said it right Brian Robson was a fantastic servant. Doesn't mean there isn't a time he's no longer good enough. Same goes for Neville and Rio. Their time was up and they left peacefully.

The reason is he is shite. Even at his best he was never technically a great short passer or had great control. What he did have was a brilliant technique when shooting from pretty much everywhere, he had a bit of pace and real desire and power. He was brilliant in his prime but unfortunately that was about 5 years ago.
Now he just lives off his name. I'd rather Troy Deeney and his widescreen head if that was an option.

I don't even think he does. He always finds a way to get himself into the most harmless position possible, in our own half usually, and then refuses to play a forward pass.

Dropping deep and playing with all the ambition of Winston Bogarde is exactly what you don't want from an attacking midfielder like.

He was also right that Wayne has been playing since he was a kid, so his body has aged quicker, think Sammy didn't get the gist of that at all.

One of these peaked 5 years ago and the other will be able to play for another 5 years at the top level.

Getting to the point where the only fitting send off would be him being stripped and marched out of Old Trafford with people throwing shit at him, whilst a nun periodically rings a bell and shouts "shame".

Interesting question this. But has he lost his drive and determination though? I think he has a bit. When Rooney was at his best he was fired up and aggressive on the pitch. You could see anger on his face. That Rooney was rampant. You now see him and he's just ambling around not actively looking for the ball. He so often plays the easy ball out wide and has lost all creative imagination. He cant sort his feet out in tight situations and get away from his man. His attitude must be maybe hes achieved so much what else is there to play for and prove? . I also think hes in his comfort zone. He thinks hes undroppable. The best thing Jose can do is drop him for his own sake. Maybe this will spur him on, if only on important occassions.

because he is incredibly unprofessional. doesn't keep himself in shape, i don't think he really puts in big hours on the training ground (you hear loads about how hard working guys like ronaldo are in training). he doesn't have a football brain at ALL. at his best it was all reactionary and instinct. now that hes lost that he has to rely on technique and intelligence...

Finished since 2011

Yep.

The beginning of the 2011/2012 season was the last time he played like the Old Rooney. Since then there has been the odd moment where he's looked good, and those moments have become rarer and rarer as the years have gone on, but he's mostly been average at best and fecking laughable at worst.

Doesn't even score the goals anymore to mask his shiteness.

He's royally fecked then

I don't think he's ever had anything like an intelligent football brain (on the few occasions he's been trusted with any kind of tactical duty he's failed woefully to carry out even simple instructions (eg vs Busquets 2011, vs Pirlo 2012, vs Coentrao 2013)), and the drive/determination he once had has sapped away during the course of the last half-decade. He's just phoning it in for the pay cheques. Throw in a less-than-professional attitude to health & fitness and too much mileage on the clock and it's not a pretty picture.

Gary still had the option of another year when he left.
Not comparable to Rooney's though. Rooney will not throw away £40m

I think Gary Neville genuinely cared about the club too. He knew him sticking around would hurt our chances of winning the league so he did the noble thing and retired with dignity.

I don't think Rooney gives a shit about Utd. He'll not be walking away from the money.

Yeah. he has lost aggression and the desire to be great. He has the comfortable mindset that he has nothing to prove so is trying to be a responsible old head on the pitch, not over exerting himself, just minding the younglings and helping the team tick along. I also think he is doing his best to impersonate Scholes and maybe this is what he thinks Scholes did on the pitch. He is very wrong though

Rooney's footballing ability was always underpinned by his athleticism and explosiveness. His first touch has always been inconsistent but he could get away with heavy control because he could barrel past a defender trying to collect the ball. He was excellent at getting the ball on the turn with a defender close to him and just barrelling past him into the space and in to goal. But his body is just shot now and all his flaws are being exposed because he can't run his way out if trouble.

I also remember him being a somewhat decent playmaker once upon a time. Or at least he had an eye for a pass. Don't know where that has gone.

I'd disagree about him not having a football brain. I genuinely don't think Rooney can be happy with his current offering but it does look more than just bad form. He needs dropping for the team and for himself. If anything it might make him fight a bit more to get himself back in the side, especially if we go on a run without him.

It's strange really. He still has moments like the Hull game a few weeks ago where he pushed us forward throughout and was a driving force for me in us getting the winner.

It's a curious case.

He was one of our best players against City. A beautiful turn in the middle of the park and then passing it out wide to let Mkhi go on a run was a highlight, so yeah he's still capable of moments but when they are just moments every few games or so, it's time to warm the bench for a while.

I don't understand why everyone is baffled.

rooney hasnt suddenly become Terrible. he has been alarmingly declining for 4 years now. fergie saw this and was ready to drop/sell him. instead he retired and moyes gave him a 5 year deal, effectively killing any chance of rooney ever pulling his finger out again and trying to regain some form.

His biggest problem is being made captain and not having to fight for his place, competition keeps players sharp and motivated. He's just a watered down half arsed version of the player he was now. He's basically Rocky at the start of Rocky III.

Nobody wanting to change their vote? I'm starting to like the theory that Mourinho is letting him play himself out pf the first XI. He did say he wanted goals from Rooney, and this was anything but. He could have had three in the 25 mins I watched of the first half. Captain of Ingurland indeed..
I agree with you, Jose is going to play him until there's no more excuses from either pundits or Paul Stretford.

He forgot how to football!

I still don't understand why Mou picked him and let him play 90 minutes. He was crap again and I hope he doesn't play on the weekend, would be very gutless from Mou if he plays him again
