Is Rooney done at the required level?

For me this has been a huge step in the process of removing Rooney from being a consistent first team starter. Mourinho played him in the position he said he fancied Rooney in before the season started and said three times in the pre-match interview that he wanted goals from Rooney. He won't face an easer opponent to show he's still got something that resembles a footballer in him for the remainder of the season, and yet he failed to deliver in spectacular fashion. Playing the full 90 minutes today will further justify dropping Rooney from the squad against Leicester and from there it won't take long before Rooney is only featuring in cup games.

Of course, if he actually does play on Saturday, all the hope that I've built up today will come crashing down and I'll start thinking about writing off this season already. Monumental few weeks for Mourinho now, as he'll never have a better chance to get rid of his biggest problem. If it doesn't happen the various conspiracy theories about Rooney's contract will look more and more likely.

I hope so. Game against Leicester is very important too.

There are only three reasons why Rooney is still an automatic fixture in the first team.

David *feckface* Moyes inserted a 'must start 100% of games if fit' clause in Rooney's ludicrous 300k a week, six year contract.

or

Jose is desperate to prove his credentials and thinks he can make Rooney world class again; a la Falcao and Torres.

or

Rooney holds such incredible influence in the dressing room that Jose is afraid of a mutiny if he is dropped.

All three reasons are horrific in their own way.

Torres didnt play that much under him, he also had not many alternatives, Ba and Etoo. The season after he went to Atletico. Falcao was a sub most of the time. I am bit sure Mou wanted him that much too. So a bit of a different scenario than here.

SAF saw the writing on the wall 4 years ago, and would have sold him back then if he'd not retired. Rooney was never world class..proved that with England, never had a decent game in a tournament part from 2004. No footballing brain, just plays on instinct but I'm afraid that's gone and all that keeps him motivated these days is 300k a week .

I beg to differ. The fact that he's been dogshit for a while shouldn't make us forget what he used to be. So let's not rewrite history shall we?

Rooney of 06-11 was World Class and he would've walked into the starting 11 of any team.

Rooney needs 4 goals to be our record goalscorer. Aguero needs 33 to do the same at city. At this rate I see Aguero doing it first, that's just how bad Rooney has been.

He was one of our best players against City. A beautiful turn in the middle of the park and then passing it out wide to let Mkhi go on a run was a highlight, so yeah he's still capable of moments but when they are just moments every few games or so, it's time to warm the bench for a while.
Not a great compliment....

Thought he was alright against City on the right wing..... think he needs to be realistic about his role now..... backup to the first team

you unwashed masses just don't know what you are watching, that was silent domination. lololololol

The last one is the most believable if we remember how many times our players revealed that Rooney has made some inspiring, emotional speeches in the dressing room post SAF. Most of them also said they always listen to Rooney since he is basically a legend.

I dont believe there would be such thing as a mutiny if Jose dropped him, but Rooney's presence in dressing room right now cant be undermined.

If he starts against Leicester, for the sake of my sanity I am going to skip the match.

Not even Moyes managed to do that for me.

Thousands of us made threats like that every week under Moyes, it's just when it comes down to it you have to watch to see just how awful it'll be.
Maybe. But I think that I am in that position for real. Football is supposed to give me some joy, not make me miserable during the match and in the following days in the Caf.

Skip the matches until he is dropped and request a ban from football forums. The only way I would manage to not go insane.

This situation is just so far past a joke I don't even muster up energy to care about it. Mind-blowing.

Not a chance he's starting against Leicester btw guys.

All these leaks coincided with Rashford in form and Rooney stinking - Rashfords taking this guys place at the weekend.

Edit: As for the "not watching until he's dropped" shtick: Get a grip of yourselves,
Mourinho WILL figure it out

I'm not sure he'll start anymore. Was completely certain that he would before the game yesterday but after that performance, and with Mourinho around, this is the best hope we got in a long, long time. I actually think he'll drop him and we will play very, very well bu he could still be back in the team for the next game.

That game should've been a gimme for Rooney; bully lower league opposition and make yourself look good. Might even fake some confidence and kick start a patch of form for him.

Carrick managed to make the most of the game, Rashford had a match winning impact from the bench, Rooney managed to look shit.

Lol. a flick turn at halfway line and a pass is considered a thing of worthy these days???

No wonder we finished 5th

Exactly. We say Rooney isn't a top player anymore, barely average at this stage and the people defending him point to a couple of situations where he did something basic right, amazing. If that justifies 300k p/w there is still hope left for me, one or two good first touches and a connected forward pass I'm positive I can do that as well.

We are a top team that should aim for nothing but the best and not drag along former world class players who can barely function at an average level for 90 minutes.

I have a thing for turns in football. I get the most satisfaction from watching a striker receive the ball with his back to goal, roll turn the defender right behind him and get a quick shot off to score a goal. Maybe it's just me. In fact it probably is. I even think you're not a proper striker until you can show this skill. Anyway ignore me!

:)

Was this on Matchday review? Just watched the replay of the show and i think they cut out the phone-in's :wenger:
The don't repeat the phone-in part, just the after match interviews. It was uncomfortable viewing watching the phone-in. They just won't stop sticking up for him. Yes he has done a lot for us, nobody can deny that, but they won't even contemplate that he might be galloping over the hill.

Make Rooney great again.

Finally someone was allowed to speak up for the supporters on MUTV.
The way Sammy McIlroy got up, it was a good job he wasn't in the same room or he might have belted him one. He was really annoyed. It's a phone-in, like this is a forum, it's for discussing the team and how players are performing.

i have a friend whos a conspiracy theory nut... he reckons 2 years ago rooney joined the illuminati.... here are his reasons...

1. rooney was getting slated before the wc and there were calls for him to be dropped. After the wc, he is made captain
2. he is made captain of man utd aswel
3. he has a a new celebration where he does the illuminati triangle with his hands every time he scores
4. he is absolutely terrible but two managers who have a history of not giving a f about reputations (jose and lvg) refuse to even consider dropping him. instead play him all over the park to shoehorn him into the side...
5. no mainstream pundit has called for him to be dropped in the last two years

as ridiculous as all that sounds, i honestly am at a point now where rooney joining a secret worldwide cult who has the power to influence global events, is one of the more likely explanations for why nobody at Manchester United can see his obvious decline...

Fecking hell.

I'm at a friends wedding in Galsgow so I'll have to miss it. Happy days because I can see him starting and it won't end well...
