Reading that statement again - what a joke it is. Absolutely ridiculous. Says nothing at all.
Liked by sportsprcompany and their CEO.

Reading too much into it is a waste of time and energy, his team basically asked a bunch of PR people to put out a statement with the prerequisite of not apologizing outright.

That's what happens when you have to manage the retirement of a legend, it's a big problem, it's difficult and it requires good dressing room management.
They don't want to play rubbish time with the game decided. Those minutes are played by kids from the youth academy, a mid-level player or someone coming back from injury.
Discuss with him privately how much he will play or play 45 minutes against crap teams but don't make him irrelevant(even if he is).
We all know what Cristiano is like but I don't think Modric, Kroos,Benzema, Messi etc would be happy with something similar.
I don't think any of those you mentioned have Ronaldo's huge ego. Most players once they see that they can no longer contribute at the highest level either retire or move to US/Asia. They accept that the end is nigh something Cristiano seems to have a difficult time accepting.
Infact I can't remember a 37 year old behaving the way this guy is.

Just had a flick through this thread. The way some folk are using the death of his child as a means of justifying walking off the pitch is crass in the extreme.

I really like how ETH has dealt with this situation. Made it clear he is just another player, and won't get special treatment. Now Ronaldo can either accept that, and work on how he can best help the team, or he can leave the club. We owe him nothing, and at this stage the team is performing better without him in the team, so he isn't justifying starting.

Zlatan. Somehow, all these players have a link with us. Its like we were a melting pot of bad behavior.

Zlatan is self-aware.

He's never refused to come on nor left a game early to my knowledge.

Just look at his influence in Milan now.

Rooney threw his toys out of the the pram too and was only convinced to stay by SAF and a massive new contract. I know that Ronaldo's act of petulance was public, but Rooney was a mercenary too. Both will always be legends. Just because things don't work out doesn't mean you can't still be a legend. Look at Keane and Stam - both left under a cloud for different reasons. Keane is without question a legend and some would argue that Stam is too.

People don't like to hear it, but Rooney was 100% right back then.

The way he went about it was wrong, but he was right with his complaints.

He admitted to his teammates that it was a contract ploy and not actual worry about the team’s decline.

It’s only the post Fergie years that in hindsight justify his complaints. If the great man stayed then we would have likely picked up another couple of league titles between 13-17.

That last bit made me giggle - “soon we’ll be together again”, dunno Ronnie, club seems pretty together lately, you’re just trying to make it about you.

The sooner he and his circus feck off the better for all parties.

Zlatan right now is a squad player at AC Milan and is comfortable with the role. He has never behaved this way atleast I've never heard about it.
His ego is too big for him to own up and unconditionally apologise to the club, teammates abd the fans.

Pointless post, as expected from anyone evaluating without context.
Whatever you think of Southgate's tactical acumen, many managers have done a lot worse with a lot better. Calling him shit is just categorically untrue.

You believe him acting as a petulant child is cause of him losing his kid 7 months ago?? It has nothing to do with it. Stop trying to justify his cnutish behavior by making up excuses and using a kid's loss at that.
This is imo beyond exceptionally poor judgement.

What a fecking travesty to be throwing a tantrum during one of the club’s best evenings in a decade, while some of his best mates like Varane and Casemiro were having the best evenings of their United careers. It’s not enough that we win but winning has to happen in glory to him because he’s God’s gift to humankind.

I doubt he has any mates

I have been having chats on Whatsapp groups and some of my friends are absolute die hard fanbois of Ronaldo. It's absolutely fascinating how logic and facts can't seem to get through their head, for them he can do no wrong and has been "disrespected".
Honestly this little episode has increased my respect for ETH and his staff tenfold.

Not a fan of him, but what has he actually done? Didnt he go into the locker room after 90 on 2-0? The game was done and just a couple of minutes left?

Whats really so terrible about that? They have tv's in the locker room and he wasnt coming on and it was 90min + on the clock.
How many players of any team you have seen doing the same? & how many of them were considered "legends" at that club? How many of them were "leaking" that they want out of the club? & after you do all that math, how many of them were "rumored" to join their hated rivals just a few months ago?

P.S. I put "legends" there because I dont consider him a legend anymore at my beloved club, everyone else is free to think what they want to.
P.P.S. He might or might not want out of the club + he wanted to join Citeh was may be rumors but may be not.

Football usually is about "what have you done for me lately". Fans can reminiscent & rightly so, we are in this for the love of the game, club & then some individuals. In this case & proven by his statement (look how he pivoted to "I have been a thorough professional for 20 years") he needs special treatment. Unfortunately timing is off. We are on a different journey as a club and he's on a different path. He should have not chosen to re-join us as it was a wrong time to do so.

I've always maintained that him joining us wasn't a bad idea in principle but it would have needed him to be a version of himself he's never been (a humble team player who'd accept his decline).
It's sad he doesn't realize how much more appreciated he'd be if his behavior was spot on and more team oriented. This "I can't do wrong" mentality is very toxic, there is no accountability these days

The feck? Ibra has been a model pro and inspiration at every club. He's aged gracefully and fully taken on board the leadership/mentor role at Milan, and is fine with not being a key player. Ibra is the model of what Ronaldo should have done

Indeed, throughout his career he's mostly been on a WUM anyway. He is a jester

Zlatan is cocky, but very much aware of his role as a mentor. And all his talk is just media show off. He loves to entertain. Most of the his team mates love him.

Let's all take a deep breath.

Ronaldo crossed a line. No two ways around that. But let's not act like he is the first United player to do so, here is one club legend who also crossed a line...

Scholes

Now, if Ronaldo wants back he needs to beg forgiveness. If not then we need to move on.

We were too dynamic last night and if a 37 year old Ronaldo can't see that I am sorry for him. Amazing player but not without flaws and as any long time fan knows time waits for no man... or player.

In a recent interview with neville he said he was in the wrong.

It's ridiculous that people actually fall for his act. He doesn't even take himself seriously...Zlatan is a model pro and has been for most of his career.

In the past he played 1 year at the highest level & the rest was a good player nothing special but fanboys will never accept this truth …. He isn’t a top 5 in our team history & would nevef be better than rooney

he is nothing but a selfish tw**** who only cares about himself just a stat padding

Those defending him in the media got paid for sure …..

Saying he chooses loyalty over man cuty is laughable considering the fact no big team wanted him at all

It's pretty offensive, isn't it?

If they want to learn more about this, there's a good exhibition at the Whitworth.

Was idiotic of him to walk down the tunnel before the end (if he had any sense he would have said he needed the loo) but do I believe a story in the Daily Fail that he refused to come on as a sub, well you might as well ask if I believe the planet is flat or that Liz Truss understands the economy. For those who do believe that tsory, do you believe everything in the Mail or just the bits that suit you?

Do I think his time at United is now up? Yes. Do I think that is sad: of course. Do I think an in-form Ronaldo would be an asset: of course

Sometimes I try to stay away from threads that only want to pour negative abuse on our players, especially if they had a bad performance, but it just can't be helped. I don't understand most of you (unless you are Liverpool fans in disguise); why do you all seem so happy pouring abuse on any player or even our manager after a game where we didn't do well?

Ronaldo's behaviour was wrong, but at least he apologized and even mentioned he did it in the heat of the moment. If he truly wanted to create chaos, he could have written something along the line of disrespect or worst still, just keep mum. Considering that he is a very big player and big players hate to stay on the bench (even Scholes once refused to play and Pep has said Messi hates to be subbed off), it is quite remarkable he has been very professional with his behaviour until the said moment at Tottenham game. Its a small matter made very big by the press (and even bigger by you guys), and it is over now. All big time managers have to deal with player tantrums and ETH has dealt with this properly, that's it.

I hope the mods take a look into this, because there are too many of you going everywhere to ruin the threads (Rashford thread, McTominay thread even ETH thread).

All the reports I've heard have said Ronaldo has been very good with the youngsters. Is what he did clever? far from it

Scholes was half Ronaldo's age and actually had a future at the club. He wasn't on half a million a week either. It's not comparable.

Player tantrums are tantrums to be handled by the manager regardless of age or salary. Stop trying to make Ronaldo sound like he is the only one who does this.

what the hell has salary got to do with anything. also money was worth rather a lot more back then so the buying power was probably closer than you think

sorry but the fact that it is ignored in almost everyone's attack on Ronaldo is pretty crass in itself

Tantrum?

He isnt 4 ffs.

Also repeating Scholes story to justify this is just. Silly.

Agree with this (although probably not the last paragraph)

So in other words, we should consider ourselves lucky he's been professional as you say up until now?

Of course big players wont want to be subbed of or not to be subbed in but not many leave the pitch and stadium before the game ends.

His 'apology' means fek all.

I don’t see how you can justify any of his behaviour. And where did he apologise? That long instagram diatribe just shows how egotistical he is. All that build out but can’t bring himself to say he was sorry. This is not the first time he has done this and has escalated his tantrums since Ole, RR and now with ETH. I for one am glad that ETH has dropped him against Chelsea and told him to stay away until next Monday. Either he accepts his role or he is welcome to leave in Jan assuming someone comes in for an increasingly delusional superstar who is miles from his peak and falling ever faster.

You're right we shouldn't believe everything. Does Daily Mail have a source for that in the club, I mean that he refused to be subbed in?
Do you for instance believe he missed preseason for personal issues?
