Ron Vlaar

No thanks, end of last year no one would have taken this guy remotely. We are in a different situation, but for me he is not an improvement on what we have.

This is the issue with British football and young players, young players make mistakes and if you want to bed them in you have to roll with that if you think they have the ability to become a top player. However I'm not sure myself that Jones, Smalling and definitely not Evans can be classified as young players being 22,22 and 26. Blackett you can excuse though.

But lets hope they bed in because they have all shown previously that they could be great players. Rojo may add something to this too. Personally would rather see any of the above 3 in the side above Vlaar.

How would Vlaar be awesome?

He is very good for Villa, EPL proven and looked very good in a back 3 at the WC. I think he is a good player tbh, very solid defender and leader at the back too.
Maybe the word awesome is OTT... but for me its a bit like Chelsea signing Cahill very good signing even though not a big name player

I think they would be. Vlaar would be for depth.

For anything less than £4M, I would have him for depth in our squad.

I would take him. He not a marquee signing, but will bring much needed stability at the back.

They have Blackett on loan to cover his loss.

Vlaar is experienced and is a leader at the back. Something we desperately need. No brainer for me. Give them Cleverley, plus either Keane or Blackett on a years loan.

Personally I thought that Villa were a different team with him playing than they were when he wasn't. The problem is that he was injured too often.

I'd of took him in the summer, but not anymore. He'll be 30 next summer. I imagine Hummels will be the target again.

We really could have used Wes Brown back today. Far better than any of our centre halfs.

If we are speculating here, then should have got Shawcross. Hard as a rock, never gets injured, ex United.

I'd rather not get anyone than get Vlaar. He had a good WC but it was in a system that was set up to contain the opposition. He has been pretty shit for Villa.

I don't want him here by any means but he really hasn't been shit for Villa.

Don't you think we could have done with containing the opposition today? It might have helped.
We have too many attacking players to play the way Holland did at the WC. They played with two more defensive minded midfielders behind Sneijder, Robben and Van Persie and we're never going to do that when we have Herrera, Di Maria, Mata, Rooney, Falcao and Van Persie.

I have a Villa fan mate who goes home and away who absolutely adores Vlaar and says he's the sole reason they've stayed up.

 I was going off the word of a friend who goes to some of their home games and thinks he's a donkey.

If we can get players like Di Maria and Falcao for the attacking positions we should be aiming higher than Ron fecking Vlaar when we are looking for defensive players.

I m convinced that our problems at the back are more related to system rather than personnel. If you look at today's side, when we lose the ball we d end up playing with 9 players as falcao and rvp are ball watching. Situation is worse with Mata on pitch, he s worldclass when we have the ball but gives the team zero when we lose the ball.
I think in the next few weeks, lvg got some difficult decisions to make....

Vlaar plays in a team that spends more time defending than attacking and has PL experience. We are not going to get some world class CB in January, in fact other than Hummels I can't think of who we will be looking at next summer, but as a stop gap to shore things up Vlaar in January might be decent business.

He's a leader too, in his actions as well as attitude. Rooney seems to think playing the captains role is just shouting at the ref more than any other player.

Agreed on both points, leading by example as opposed to yelling all the time is the way to go, the odd blast here and there is fine of course. People seem to be turning their nose up at Vlaar but I see him as ideal given he'd be coming in mid-season and already knows the manager and more importantly the league so he wont need to get up to speed.

Van Gaal must be kicking himself today for putting his trust in a pussy like Smalling. I'd say right now he is drawing up plans to flog Smalling in January and buy whoever he can instead. It's almost impossible to get the players you need in January as last seasons panic buy of Mata proved but Vlaar would be a decent option until the summer if we could get him. He's far better than any of our current injury prone and struggling central defenders.

That is impressive. I think we should have signed him in the summer, if we couldn't get Hummels and I think we'll regret it over the course of this season.
We're already regretting it. With him in the back line we would have made a better start to the season.

I've not been banging the Vlaar drum but he has absolutely not been "pretty shit for Villa." He's been their best defender pretty much since they signed him and he's carried his WC form into this season.

I'll admit I was going off other people's words there as I haven't watched much of him at Villa so I'll take that back. I still stand by the fact that he's nowhere near good enough for United.

How on Earth can you stand by that when you admit yourself that you haven't really seen him play?

Not saying he is good enough btw. Although I think we could have done worse.
