Ron Vlaar

I'm sorry but it doesn't work like that. We'd have to let go of one of Evans, Smalling or Jones or convert them into fulbacks to accomodate another centre back.

I agree that we should have one top class centre back at the club, but realistically there's simply no way of keeping so many centre backs happy. It's not that people dont want our defence to improve. It's just the reality that for one to come in we'd have to let one go now or pretty soon.

I don't disagree with you. However it's time to let someone go and bring in the quality. That's what I'm trying to say, really. Not saying we stock up on CBs, I'm saying we need to let someone go and get someone of quality in.

Oh I agree. Quality must not be compromised.

The problem with our current strategy is that we are banking on BOTH Jones and Smalling becoming great defenders. But the rate they are getting injured, it's significantly harming their chances. I'm all good for banking on one, but we can't keep hoping both will succeed. They may well, but it's just such a huge risk

LVG would have snapped him up by now if he really wanted him. I imagine he would have been pretty easy to get off Villa.

We only got Rojo after Vermaelen went to Barca. We are linked with Benatia if we cant get him than would not be surprised if ends up here. But that would be the last transfer we make as its the least urgent in term of the number we already have.

If Vlaar came, he wouldn't be just a squad player. On current form he is better than any of our centre backs and would play every week. And he has experience and leadership.

We could probably do with him now. Nobody in this team seems to have a backbone, they're all passive wrecks.

He's a shithouse, but think Young's quite important to us this season to be honest in how he can play the left wing back role and a back up winger.

Feck me if Ashley Young is important in any position you know this team is in trouble.

I'd rather a young player be back up winger. We also have Shaw and Rojo who are capable of playing left wing back role. Reece James, as well.

feck Young. He should be sold.

Vlaar? Thanks but no, he s no better than what we have.

And if he is better than what we have we are in deep trouble.
some ppl here have gone into full player manage mode thinking that they can solve problems only by buying and selling. Perhaps it s the way they were brought up with...

Some need to listen to the Manager. His quotes regarding, building a team takes time, & players believing in the philosophy, all examples of how he thinks.
Some on here would have us selling half the squad & somehow getting a team of the latest muppet must haves to replace them!

I personally think that whatever Moyes did to the squad will take time to undo. He broke the feeling of invincibility our players had, they always seemed to believe in the Manager & had faith in his tactics, this will come in time with Van Gaal.

What baffles me is that the current United formation gets so much attention and how specialist the CB's need to be.

Yet Ron effin Vlaar managed to play pretty well in a back 3 at the WC! so it can't be that difficult.

Playing 3-5-2 is completely different to playing 4-4-2.

The area you are based in is completely different, the players you mark, the areas you mark, the runners you track.

Yes! I'm aware of the differences but my point was, if Vlaar can do it! then i'd expect Evans, Smaling and Jones to be able to do it too.

Reading that just made me think of Wes Brown. Jones is heading the same way...

Vlaar is utter wank. Would be the weakest of all our cental defenders by a distance. He was alright at the World Cup, but jesus, have you watched him for Villa? They concede far too many goals. I'm stunned he's even a topic of conversation. Some people do our lads a disservice at times, they really do.

Have you watched who he plays with at Villa?

That's a stupid comment to make. Even put Some of the best defenders alongside that Villa back line and they'd struggle.

The same shit was said about Cahill, when we were linked with him. Oh look how many goals Bolton concede and he's not good enough for a top club.

You make that argument for any CB who does not play for a top club.

Yes, I've also watched him personally at Villa. He's been shite.

Having lived with a Villa fan for a year and being forced to watch some of their matches, he strikes me as more of a Tal Ben Haim then a Cahill

Vlaar was brilliant in 5-3-2 system at the worldcup under Van Gaal. I Know PL and world cup are two different things, but I can't imagine a shite defender pulling off what he managed, he really impressed me out there in that central role at the back 3. I would not want us to invest big in him, as he is already quite old and there certainly are better more promising players out there, but if we could get him for a reasonable fee? I would not be against it. I rate him higher than Evans and his experience would be welcome.

Just in...

Text from a friend of mine who is saying Vlaar to United by end of the day. Just agreeing a fee with Villa is the stumbling block however it all could depend on Cleverley.

FWIW, a mate of mine who caught wind of Mata about an hour after the Chelsea game also told me this today.

Probably worth nothing though, I reckon he got lucky.

Just what a friend of mine has said. He isn't a United fan and is no bullshitter. Just have to see how it unfolds.

Interesting, this signing would be awesome, hope it gets done

It will cost a lot as Villa would have no replacement ready I think for their captain.

This would be a great signing. Both because he's a good player and because Arsenal are in for him and it would be hilarious to see us nick him.
