There once was a kid from Toronto...
Except he is.He's not even among Aston Villa's best players, that whole defence couldn't make it into a top 6 side. The world cup has never been the best judge of players ability.

Nice to see people ignoring his performances for Villa over the last 2 years then.
This is the key point, I think somewhere like Southampton would be his level esp when Lovren leaves. I really don't think he's much more than a decent, honest centre half for all that he's had a very good world cup.Not sure. There is clearly a good defender. Not good enough for us, but he is decent.
Look at Gary Cahill. People were laughing at Chelsea for signing him because of how many goals Bolton were conceding. It's not easy for Vlaar playing alongside all these young defenders at Villa.
Villa won't let him go cheap, and I doubt he will be happy to sit on the bench. He isn't really good enough to be a main starter for us so it's a no go in my eyes.I don't know why people are quick to dismiss him as an option for us? No one is saying he'll set the world on fire - heck, no one is saying he'll even be first choice. But it's a position we need cover in, at a club who need money, and so we could probably get him at a relatively cheap cost. I would take him over Vermaelan, who spends the majority of a season injured.
It's funny how quick people are to dismiss players on some stereotype impressions of a player.
Is he a world class CB? No. Is he good enough to be a first choice at a top club? No, probably not. Is he a decent cover option? Yes, I do think he is.
Sturridge, Sterling, Hazard, Willian, Benteke, Navas, Walcott, Remy, Schurrle etc... There's more than enough pace to threaten in the leagueand we've been used to playing with CB's who have decent pace, aside from the last season of course.
Unlike in a tournament, CB's in a challenging Prem side, need to able to push up & have the pace to cover counter attacking forwards, like Suarez, (oh wait, not Suarez ) er, Aguero (oh wait, he's fecked) er, come to think of it, who's the quickest forward our CB's will face this season???

I said before the last game that he has looked the best of the Dutch central defenders but no one else agreed with me!He's had a terrific World Cup. One of the best Dutch players i'd say.
Yeah, more teams are going for more slower but perhaps technically gifted forwards to bring the pacey wingers/inside forwards into play.Yep. I was thinking out & out no.9's but they seem to be a dying breed - Schurrle - how many starts will he get?
Anyway cheers
It was a phantom penalty in his defence. Poor call. I do agree de Vrij has looked equally impressive; Vlaar is very last ditch, no-nonsense, de Vrij has looked assured and composed, bringing the ball out when he has been surronded by a fair few players not very good on it (Janmaat, Vlaar, Wijnaldum).I think De Vrij has been just as good, although he did give away the penalty against Spain. He's also 7 years younger
I'm with you there.
But then I've always thought Vlaar was a decent defender... hampered massively by a shoddy defense and an often non-existant midfield at Villa...
If LVG can make Vlaar perform like has done at this World Cup... why not?
Concrete Ron was the best player on the pitch last night.
29 years old, PL experience and in the last year of his contract at Villa, if the plan is to give Jones and Smalling the chance to cement themselves then he seems an ideal signing to me.

The fact it was a penalty helps I suppose. How can you give away a penalty if it wasnt a penalty ??..lol
Good in a 532 or 352, not good in a 442 or 433, 4231 etc.

Bullshit. You let your best penalty takers take first. They score, someone in other team misses. Chances are you won't need the 5th taker. Every penalty counts the same. Probably more pressure on a decisive penalty but after that I reckon the biggest pressure is on the first taker. No one has scored and he can immediately take the lead. Statistics also show that the team that scores first from penalties usually wins.Because there's the least pressure on, knowing you have 4 to salvage it if he misses.
He definitely isn't as slow as some on here like to believe. Everyone on a Villa forum I'm on enjoyed a laugh at people calling him too slow on here.Wow, where's all those people on page 1 with their "no pace" "painfully slow" comments?
wow..what a story that would be if the ball actually crosses the line.that fecking penalty almost crossed the line . Ive just only heard about this now
He did score the penalty...
How the hell did the two referees not notice this??
