He's quite good but has no pace. Protected in a back 3 it might work out for the Netherlands, we can aim a bit higher.
There are worse options for an older experienced CB thats rotated with Jones, Smalling and Evans though.
Plenty of average players have had otherwise excellent tournaments.

I wouldn't say this is a knee-jerk reaction to a few good games that the whole world has been watching. We were linked with Vlaar last season too so we've prob been scouting him for a while.
Very good again today. If he can play like this on the World stage then those that wrote him off as not world class could well be wrong.
I certainly think Van Gaal will know enough about him to decide if he can succeed Vidic as the leader at the back for us.
If he's so good, why did Netherlands have to go to 3 at the back? LVG did this because their defence is a weak point. For Vlaar its simply a lack of mobility. None of these Dutch CBs are going to be a solution in a defensive pair.
I think you're underrating their defence. If they weren't good then why would we be trying to buy Vlaar, De Vrij, Blind and Martins-Indi?

At that age Franck Ribery's career was going nowhere, he had played for a few French Clubs, Galatasaray and went to Marseilles. Now he has a Balon D'or.
At 24 Ian Wright was in the second divison , three years away from going to Arsenal.
Penalties come down to who wants to take them. Maybe no other player wanted it.Why was he the first penalty taker? It was obvious he's going to miss it.
Because there's the least pressure on, knowing you have 4 to salvage it if he misses.

I don't even blame him for that penalty. He's a typical strong Dutch defender and done everything what was required on this tournament.
But Vlaar was on the pitch against Costa Rica and didn't take one?
Strange decision when Kuyt and Robben had both scored last time, Huntelaar on the pitch too.
Yup. Two wonderful shot stoppers. Mascherano saved Argentina tonight from Robben's charge from Sneijder's light pass.He has been excellent in fairness, himself and Mascherano were streets ahead of everyone else tonight.
I know I'll get shit for this but I'd p[refer him to Vermaelen.
They did a pretty decent job of keeping the worlds best player quiet as well as one of the worlds top strikers. He's not even among Aston Villa's best players, that whole defence couldn't make it into a top 6 side. The world cup has never been the best judge of players ability.
He looks solid. This WC is the first I've seen of him.
I actually agree with this! He has been the stand out defender for me in this tournament! God what am I saying!!I know I'll get shit for this but I'd p[refer him to Vermaelen.
Ron Vlaar reached top speed of 33 km/h according to FIFA live statistics, which makes him the 7th fastest football player in the world
I know I'll get shit for this but I'd p[refer him to Vermaelen.
