Never considered him a " big games player " and that's my biggest concern about him. I can't see him the type of striker that will lead us in CL for example, when we're meeting better defenses.
He played for a team that has a pathological aversion to winning significant football matches.

I think if you put Lukaku in the Chelsea team he'd shine and score a shit load. I don't think the same could be said for our team in its current state.

Wouldn't mind having him but 100M is way to much. Can't he be signed for free in Jan?

He's a donkey, don't want but we don't really have many options right now...

I'd take Belotti ahead of him. He's a more ruthless finisher, which should be priority number one in our striker hunt this summer, and in general he's just a less flawed player. Of course he's risky because he'd be coming from Serie A, which is stylistically the biggest leap to the PL... but that's an argument against Belotti, not an argument for Lukaku. The latter may be a known quantity but that means known weaknesses as well as strengths, and it's wishful thinking to expect those weaknesses to just disappear at a bigger club.

Lukaku wouldn't be a bad signing, but not a good enough one for silly money. I'd start losing interest above £50m.

I'm guessing you're over 35 (as I am)...

It's crazy money, but you gotta view signings relative to the day and age they're taking place in.

Rom vs John Stones (50m)
Rom vs Sterling (45m - few years ago)
Rom vs di Maria (60m - few years ago)
Rom vs Pogba (90m)

He's still only 23, PL proven over and over again, and rarely goes 2 matches without scoring.

In a dominant United side, he'd score between 20 and 35 goals a season, every season.

Added to that, he's settled in England, and actively thrives in the PL. He's very unlikely to start harping on about his 'dream to play' at Real or Barca etc.

Long story short - in this day and age, on his current form, he's easily worth £70m.

You cannot use the stupid purchases of a club that paid £18m for Jo and £25m for Bonny to justify a price tag for Lukaku

if we had one of those, then it would be ok. As it is though, he'd be our big purchase of the summer and essentially a straight swap for Zlatan in (by the looks of it) the same attack (plus Perisic apparently). That attack didn't exactly set the world alight last season and I don't think Lukaku is significantly better than Zlatan and certainly doesn't offer the same presence and class. I'm not saying we shouldn't get him but if it means he's taking up most of our budget I'd be looking at Aubameyang for £65m or so, or even Lacazette for £50m, so that we could perhaps put some cash aside and get a player like James or Mahrez to add some attacking class.

£100m for him would be daylight robbery. I'm still not convinced he's good enough for a top club. First touch has improved but still below average, his movement and positioning in the box is questionable and he's still pretty useless in tight spaces. I hate that he's #1 choice for Belgium.

Can't see him moving to us or Chelsea.
The Costa to China noise seems to have died down, and you can't see us lashing the fee required when we need work elsewhere.

Staying at Everton for me!

I really like him and would love to see him here. On the one hand, I don't think he's worth the £100m being bandied around and wouldn't want to be paying that considering all we need to buy this summer. On the other, I don't think we'd actually end up paying that much as it's an insane figure and I don't think we're going to get anyone much better for much cheaper.

I think if we get him for about £40m to £60m then he'd be a very good signing. Gives us pace, power, finishing and an aerial threat up front. Although he can't match Zlatan technically, he outscored him last season and provides the pace we lacked with him up top.

If he's moving, it can only be Chelsea or MUFC. Especially at the previously rumoured price.

Can't quite get my head around this potential transfer. My heart says no, but my head says he would score an absolute feckload for us...you cannot argue with his record, it can't be fluke over that period of time.

I reckon he's known he was coming to United ever since holidaying with Pogba last summer. That's why he was so shite against us last season - he wanted us to be in the Champions League!

I'd say his best bet is staying at Everton.

Arsenal haven't been linked seriously to him,but is that a possibility?

No he would. People just don't like his style, which you can understand. But it's not like Van Nistelrooy was majestic to watch.

Where's Costa going to, to justify a Chelsea move being realistic?

This seems like a pretty big deal, this admission sounds to me like some sort of Rooney plus cash type deal is in the works.

Our best option for a striker hes been consistent in the PL for years but that price tag is absurd. His contract is up in 2019 so Everton dont have a reason to sell right now so he'll have to pressure them into doing so and for a reasonable price.

Yeah I agree with this - I think people are being a bit snooty about Lukaku because he isn't seen to have 'proved himself' at the highest level yet and because he isn't the 'big name' people want. Well he is a proven goal scorer in the premiership which is something you desperately need, he is only 23 with the best years ahead of him and with plenty of room to improve his game. He would score a bucket load of goals for Utd.

Good post, but I really feel he is Chelsea bound.

#9 is where we need the most work, is it not? The club has said it is the priority, and quite rightly, as we have the worst goalscoring record in the Top 7 in 16/17, and our best centre forward is injured (and may not even come back to us).

I can see the club spending big on whoever they can get. Lukaku is available, albeit for a silly price. There's no way Lukaku should become the most expensive player in the world.

I think it will be Chelsea though. He's spoken fondly of them since leaving. If both clubs stump up the money, I can't see him choosing United over Chelsea.

I think he is Chelsea bound which I am quite happy about tbh, I get the feeling Conte want's Morata but Chelsea board want to bring Lukaku "Home" kind of deals, classic chelsea board,

He will defintiley score them quite a few goals but I just feel when you really need your star man in the big games, the champions league against your Madrid's or Bayern's etc he will always flounder and never really drag the team to the finishing line and tbh if you are paying 100m for a player you really should be expecting that.

That's the sticking point for me to. The fact he cannot do it against the big sides which we will need in the Champions League. He would be handy against the rubbish sides we couldn't manage to beat last season though.

We need someone to take chances and score - could be a good buy for any team who is able to create chances

Costa is the wild card. Surely he'd have to be moved on for lukaku to come in to chelsea?

I'd be surprised if anything is happening with him, staying at Everton imo

I think him moving is subject to certain others moves. We'd probably go for him if we can't get Morata who's first choice and Chelsea would go for him if Costa moves. Good chance he ends up staying there in such a scenario but it wouldn't be for a lack of trying. He clearly wants a move.

After that interview he isn't staying at Everton. I don't know where he'll end up, I'd love him here at United but I don't think he'll stay at Everton.

just over one season left on the contract and is refusing to sign. He goes for 75-80 mill in this window IMO

I just don't see him here, Chelsea seems the logical move, but obviously Costa isn't going anywhere now.

Rooney + cash could be the offer.
