Robin van Persie

Some clever marketing bloke came up with a list of players that would be good to sign for commercial reasons. Okay far fetched but I just dont believe we had Kagawa in mind when we fecked up in Europe last season and got outplayed or overpowered in the midfield.

Yeah, we know its not for selling shirts because of the Nike deals, but who knows what doors are being opened because of this signing.

did we need to sign an attacking midfielder before getting a decent central midfielder?

Nobody ever said we signed Klberson or Anderson because of marketing potential in South America.

So Fergie is involved in a conspiracy to feck with our fans' emotions by pretending to sign Ronaldos, and our commercial department are in charge of our transfer shortlists.

What else is going on at the club that we don't know about?

Perhaps Fergie is involved in a secret scrap metal conspiracy whereby trophies are slowly but surely going missing from our trophy cabinets and are being smelted down for profit?

It's funny because it's true :nervous:

In a shock interview, FIFA agent Fabio Parisi claims “Juventus have had a signed contract with Robin Van Persie for some time locked in a desk.”

The Arsenal star has stated he won’t renew his deal with the Gunners, which expires next summer, so he has been at the centre of a bidding war between Juve, Manchester United and Manchester City.

“I think Juventus have had a signed contract with Van Persie for some time locked away in a notary’s desk,” FIFA agent Parisi told Sportitalia television.

“It is just my opinion, but I think there’s an eight out of 10 chance the Dutchman will join the Bianconeri.

Not really. Do I think the marketing people had big smiles on their faces when they heard we were after Kagawa? I'm sure they did. But 'considered' is too big a word. Fergie signed him because he's a great footballer. The marketing issue is a bonus for other departments. Did we consider marketing when we signed Jones, Young or Smalling?

In my opinion its incorrect to think that United goes for a player just because there's a position that needs to be filled. You mentioned 3 players which have a couple of characteristics in common (more or less). They are young (ie potential huge resale value), who came at the right fee/salary (they respect the wage structure at United) and they happen to be homegrown talent AND versatile (25 player rule).

Clubs tend to see a player as a package. Kagawa is young (plus), he came at the right fee and salary (plus), he's talented and versatile (plus). He's not a homegrown talent (minus) however the marketing exposure gained by him is extraordinary (big plus).

There's no denying that Manchester United's football side is a significant part of what it is. However (and unfortunately) Manchester United is first and foremost a franchise owned by ambitious business men whose aim is to increase their franchise brand name. Getting Japan and Asia's best player is a big big bonus.

Sir Alex decides who to sign. He doesn't give a monkey's arse whether the player is from Iceland, San Marino or Japan. He doesn't sign Maltesers though, he hates them.

Do people here really think van Persie would join one of United or City? I mean he claimed he wouldn't join another English team not so long ago. Not 1 or 2 years ago but just 2 or 3 months ago.

Maybe. But if he doesnt want to play in Italy then he has to go to either City/United. There doesnt seem to be any interest from Spain/Germany or PSG.

Yeah, all of this doesn't make much sense. He surely knew through Fabregas that Barcelona wouldn't want a new striker. He surely knew Real Madrid are stacked in that position with 2 world class strikers. Then he and his father publicly claim he won't join another English team. So which clubs did he actually have in mind when he released that "I won't extend my contract" thing on his website? Juventus? Really? I mean, sure, he'd win a Scudetto there but is a title in Italy worth throwing away all the worshipping he's receiving in the Emirates?

So he's joining a club who's manager is banned till November and a league that's going downhill? Anyway this would be way better than him joining City.

Almost certainly. Footballers generally want to win things.

That's a bit of a generalisation tbf. Buffon stayed with Juventus when they got relegated. De Rossi still plays at Roma despite every elite club in the world having shown interest in him at some point. Xavi stayed with Barcelona in Barcelona's darkest times despite United and Milan trying to lure him away etc. Also it depends what "things" I reckon. A Champions League trophy? Fair enough. It's the most prestigious trophy a footballer can win at club level. I don't see Juventus having more chances of winning a CL than Arsenal though. A league title in currently the 4th or 5th most attractive league in Europe however -- I don't know if that will really give van Persie any sort of satisfaction. Rather lift an FA Cup as Arsenal's captain than win a Scudetto with Juventus. IMO of course.

alan smith siad he would "never play sign for manchester united" 7 days before standing near fergie holding up the shirt having signed a 4 year deal.

wayne rooney was once a blue always a blue.

rio said some very anti united things prior to signing.

Not to mention Robben's dad is supposed to be dead right now.

Juventus probably have a forged signed contract for every footballer on the planet.

I don't think that's compareable. I DO believe that Smith never wanted to join Manchester United but Leeds themselves forced the move after their relegation situation, didn't they?

Whatever Rooney said is not relevant. He was a kid when he said it. And he's thick anyway.

Don't know about Rio.

RvP however is neither forced out by Arsenal because of financial trouble, nor a thick kid. At the time he made those statements he surely knew already that he wouldn't stay. So why lie?

But maybe that's just me being naive and believing in a bit of common sense. I refuse to accept that all footballers are thick cnuts.

Conte's plea bargain has been rejected and he now faces trial and an even longer ban. Does RvP really want to go to a managerless club?

It's hard to believe in the 'signed contract in drawer' story. Why would any footballer, older than sixteen, limit his options like that.

Nor do I think Van Persie will be bound by what he said 3 months ago. Relations between him and Arsenal are a lot cooler now, and he may have changed his mind about playing against them.

A signed contract in drawer, just like Russia had with Mancini? Pfft.

He must be sick of playing for an underachieving team. Juventus are stronger than Arsenal, and at any rate they would pay him more.

RVP is Dutch, at the end of the day he has no real bond with Arsenal other than an employment contract.

Unfortunately i can't see RvP going anywhere other than either side of Manchester. The big Spanish two don't seem interested and i'd be very surprised if he goes to Serie A.

I'm doubting the real reason behind signing Kagawa. Don't get me wrong I think he is a smashing player already, but a) not a typical SAF signing, b) we didn't really need an attacking midfielder and c) he wasn't exactly cheap

So is this guy a WUM or what?

The real reason you signed Kagawa is because he's going to be a star for you lot.

I think it was a bonus that he was from Japan. A big wealthy country where there is money to be made. When United signed the likes of Veron and Anderson not much was said about the fact that it was good for United in terms of marketing in South America. It obviously gave United a great chance to get a better foothold there. I think Kawaga will show people he was signed primarily for his football ability. People need to remember that nearly all foreign signings bring in new marketing opportunities for United.

Might as well shut the thread now, since there is a trustworthy report that there is a contract signed and sitting in a vault somewhere and not to mention the confirmation via Homeomorphic. This is as good as over lads. :(

A signed contract and yet an 8 out of 10 certainty that he'll join. Hilarious.

feck, I was hoping that would not be true. Quick to the Lucas thread!

Shit its locked....Off to the Messi thread!!!

Shit we dont have one....feck it, bring back Ronaldo.

Personally I am hoping that we predominantly play 4-2-3-1 next season, we already have the squad to fill the front four positions with very good players. Taking into account RVP's age, fragility and cost, not to mention the likelihood that he will limit chances for Welbeck and Hernandez, I just don't see the sense in this transfer at all.
