You don't seriously think he was bought as a shirt seller in the Asian market?

Bundesliga player of the year.

One of the stand-out performers of the German league and cup champions.

Slight factual correction here; he is in fact not the Bundesliga POTY, mainly because that award hasn't been decided yet.

Yes I do believe the fact that he is Asian was the biggest factor. Everything we've heard in the last few days is evidence that money is top priority.

Nah, if we added another 5-10 million we could have probably targeted some very decent central midfielders. Now we down 12 million and still short in the one area we needed to re-enforce.

remember we had Scholes out of retirement and believing Anderson and Cleverley will stay fit and fill that gaping void in the middle of the park...

I do think kagawa is a good player and Asian does help, but at the expense of not getting a decent central midfielder is what makes me doubt.

Sir Alex doesn't seem to think we need a central midfielder.

I don't think was bought to sell shirts... I mean, Nike have already paid upfront, however, he could help secure potentially lucrative deals from that part of the world.

It doesn't matter Spoonsta, people will keep believing United sign players like Park and Kagawa to sell shirts despite not earning a penny from a shirt sale since 2002...

"It will effectively hand control of Manchester Utd's global replica-kit and merchandising business to the sportswear giant.

However, the amount paid to the club by Nike will be reduced if the team does not finish in the top half of the Premiership or take part in European competition.

Under the deal, Manchester Utd will grant exclusive rights to sponsor its gear, manufacture and sell its merchandise and operate Manchester United's existing retail operations.

The agreement starts on 1 August 2002 and will run for 13 years, althought Nike will have the option to end the arrangements in 2008.

Nike will form a wholly-owned subsidiary to control Manchester Utd's global licensing and retail operations.

I can't remember the last time I actually read about RVP in this thread.

All quiet?

Rvp is so good he'd score 10,000 goals a season at United :D

SAF publicly naming our targets and one of them is 28 years old which clearly goes against his policy of buying young, and the other seemed random to most of us. We were all shocked by this right?

I don't believe SAF has not been encouraged to look at Kagawa. Luckily he is a good player so he gets the benefit of the doubt.

You can only look at the Lucas thread and the variuos websites to see how much excitement this possible signing was causing, even though we have enough wingers already.

you lot don't really believe we're trying to sign RVP do you?

No - he's City-bound and everyone pretty much knows it. I'm not really sure what is the motivation behind Sir Alex confirming our interest (though it was obviously leaked out), but I'd be very surprised if he moved somewhere other than City.

Why did he name Lucas and not someone who would have titillated the masses more?

I dont know to be honest, but the thought that we might unearth the another Ronaldo seems to play to our emotions more than getting an already proven player . C'mon we've been "titilated" enough.

Interesting. So Fergie has sat down and thought up a perfect young Ronaldo type candidate which he thinks will stir our emotions up enough, only with absolutely no intention to follow through, just to feck with us.

So what happens if Sao Paolo accepted one of our bids?

Hell of a game Fergie is playing, throwing around huge multimillion pound bids for players just to stir emotions in the fans.

Unless Sao Paolo are in on it too? What do you reckon? Fergie really is a devious bastard.

This is almost as devious as his remote controlling of referees and that time he made a beachball appear in front of Liverpool's goal.

What does that mean?

Some clever marketing bloke came up with a list of players that would be good to sign for commercial reasons. Okay far fetched but I just dont believe we had Kagawa in mind when we fecked up in Europe last season and got outplayed or overpowered in the midfield.

Yeah, we know its not for selling shirts because of the Nike deals, but who knows what doors are being opened because of this signing.

did we need to sign an attacking midfielder before getting a decent central midfielder?

Are you deluded? He is an up and coming youngster. One of the best players in the attacking mid position. He offers so much creativity. He is cheap, young, really good, wants to play for us, not on high wages and offers so much value. The marketing thing is just an added bonus. If anything he IS the typical Fergie signing.

So Fergie is involved in a conspiracy to feck with our fans' emotions by pretending to sign Ronaldos, and our commercial department are in charge of our transfer shortlists.

What else is going on at the club that we don't know about?

Perhaps Fergie is involved in a secret scrap metal conspiracy whereby trophies are slowly but surely going missing from our trophy cabinets and are being smelted down for profit?

Out of interest Bloxy, how much of Kagawa have you seen?

He provides exactly what we've been missing going forward. Composure, retention and creativity from the centre, not to mention goals.

Just because our midfield is an issue doesn't mean that the Kagawa signing isn't a good one. Even just seeing him in that friendly the other day made it easy to realise what we'd been missing for pretty much the whole of last year, irrespective of whether or not he performs. Personally, I think it'll become very apparent how much of an improvement it will be to have Kagawa behind the front man as opposed to the Rooney of last season (who still played fantastic, but made us a bit too predictable in my opinion).

Kagawa at 12m was surely too good to pass up.

Bloxy on a Fergie behind everything mission

We will sign him in the next week to stem any tide against the IPO.

He will do his ankle or hamstrings by January.

Anyone thinking that we didn't considered Kagawa's marketing potential is as naive as those thinking that we bought him just to sell shirts. If I remember well, a German journalist said that the boy was followed by a horde of Japanese journalists whose role was to feed their locals with information about their star players. The city of Perugia was saw a 30% increase in tourists (not to forget merchandizing etc) when Nakata signed with them. This exposure is what any franchise craves for.

Would it be worth it if we buy him for, say 25mil, and he scores 25+ goals for each of the next 2 seasons and win us the league and maybe one CL? This is regardless of his age and assuming he leaves after 3 seasons, with the final one blighted by injury.

I think yes.

Not really. Do I think the marketing people had big smiles on their faces when they heard we were after Kagawa? I'm sure they did. But 'considered' is too big a word. Fergie signed him because he's a great footballer. The marketing issue is a bonus for other departments. Did we consider marketing when we signed Jones, Young or Smalling?
