Robin van Persie

There's a limit to what Arsenal can do. They WANT to sell Van Persie because they can't afford to let him go on a free next year. If he says that club X is his choice, they'll have to do it.

I rather just keep Berbatov if we were seriously after Van Persie.

Van Persie's an injury prone cnut who had never scored 20 league goals before last season. In fact, before then, he'd had more seasons with goal tallys in single digits rather than double. He'd only scored 20 in all competitions twice before that and he's been at Arsenal the better part of a decade. He only became what he was last season when he was the lone attacking threat in the team and everything went through him. The lowball 10m offer seems about right and even then I'm not sure it'd be worth the headache it'd cause in the team.

That's all hugely misleading. He's scored 68 goals in 108 starts in the Premier League and Champions League since the age of 23, and he developed into a top class player long before this season. I can't believe anyone is suggesting anything else.

...

You're not seriously suggesting he wasn't highly rated before last season? He was two goals off top scorer the season before despite starting just half of the games. He scored in 10 of his last 14 league games in that season, or 15 goals in total from those 14 games. He's been consistently scoring and creating against all manners of opposition for ages now, and sprinkling bits of magic throughout. It's not like he's just been 'productive', his game's always had plenty of beauty to it as well. Rocket shot, great set pieces, great passing, great close control and a great first touch - he's displayed that throughout his career.

I think that's unfair, his injuries just hid his brilliance to an extent. I know you can't prove anything with stats but in 10/11 his were: 19 starts, 18 goals, 7 assists. He was two goals off the top scorer award (despite making less appearances than 18 of the top 20 scorers). In 09/10 he made just 16 league appearances, but he still scored 9 goals and assisted 7, he was doing it just often not enough to remember. In 08/09 he made just 24 starts but still topped the assists list with 10 and scored 11. He kept up that consistency of around 1 goal/assist per game for 5 seasons straight before this one.

In 06/07 he had a rate that was only slightly worse than his goals/assists rate this season, and his best rate was last season, so I think he's shown for a long while that he'll guarantee you goals when he's on the pitch. He scored a hat-trick against Chelsea, he scored or assisted in all 4 of the goals against Spurs 3 years ago, he got two assists against Liverpool in 06/07 and he got a goal or an assist against us in 4 of the last 5 seasons. He's been fairly consistent, he just hasn't had the game-time to back it up.

If SAF can complete this transfer it will probably be the toughest one so far. Van Persie is an icon at Arsenal and it could go down as one of those Sol Campbell/Figo-transfers when you look at what's in the pot.

nah, I doubt the toffs at arsenal will be throwing a pigs head at RvP if he's in our colours and taking a corner at the emirates.

Stapleton was pretty big at arsenal and made the move directly to us.

I wouldnt underestimate the bitterness of Arsenal fans. 100 goals for their club but when he leaves for Manchester, they'll drag his name through the mud as much as possible. And I'm sure there will be a spare pig's head around near the emirates

Yeah I doubt they'll act the way we acted when Heinze and Tevez left the clubs

For me - I would have had no problems with Tevez if he had kept his mouth shut after leaving us. But he has taken every opportunity to bad-mouth Ferguson and United.

Compare that to Ronaldo - whom despite leaving us for Madrid, I can find nothing bad to say about. I have nothing but respect for Ronaldo.

Another difference is that Tevez, even though he did well, didnt do near as much or stay near as long as RVP has at Arsenal. If someone stays at your club for 8 years and scores over 100 goals for you it should be hard for you to slate him if he wants to move on

They wont find it hard at all.

I seen the reception they gave Adebayor. Not since the day Millwall fans went ape shit at Maine Road have I seen such venom in football fans.

Come on Gill lets wrap this one up so he's in the starting XI at Goodisen

Mancini fears City are losing chase for wantaway Arsenal skipper Van Persie

Roberto Mancini fears Manchester City have lost the initiative in the scramble for Robin van Persie's signature.

Arsenal had been bracing themselves for another approach from City when the teams meet for a friendly in Beijing on Friday but this may not happen.

Mancini has become increasingly unhappy that the Barclays Premier League champions have dithered, possibly missing their chance to capture his prime target, who has told the Gunners he will not sign a new deal when his current one expires next year.

Manchester United and Juventus are also in the hunt for the 28-year-old Dutchman with serious offers on the table and their heritage appeals to Van Persie, who insists his desire to move is fuelled by ambition and not money.

City have the financial muscle to gazump either United or Juventus and can offer an attractive personal package but have become intent on selling Emmanuel Adebayor or Carlos Tevez or both, before signing another striker on big wages, in attempt to acknowledge UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations.

United's current bid is thought to be £16.5million which is close to the limit of what Juventus can afford.

The Italian champions have limited funds are will not go higher than 20m Euros but hope they can tempt Van Persie to Turin with a place as the spearhead of their plans to dominate Italian football once again and their return to the Champions League for the first time since they were punished for the corruption scandal of 2006.

Juventus are offering competitive personal terms, helped by a lower tax rate, and have the advantage that Arsenal would prefer to sell to a club outside the Premier League.

I think this is about 50-50.

Think we would pay him £180k pw? I think we may, certainly of we can cut Berba's 110k pw.

I thought he would go to City all summer until Fergie admitted we were in for him. For him to do that I think he must be really confident of signing RVP.

Agreed, but that discounts the possibility that he is using the fuss over RVP to conduct other business under the radar. Knowing how much Fergie and Gill love keeping their business secret, I'd say that scenario is a possibility.

I think we could match Rooney's wage at the most, but I'd be very surprised if we went beyond that - would be unsettling for everyone. Of course some think Rooney is on £250,000 a week because of tabloid hype, but seriously I'd think £150-180k would be the range he's in. Tevez is on far more, so if City finally feck him off then they could still outbid us on wages but still be paying less than currently to Tevez.

Just to repeat: I don't think he's coming here.

Bids on RvP and Lucas have made people speculate about Nanis future. But Nani have been offered an extention, and already was when we bid for Hazard..

If Ferguson manage to bring in RvP and Lucas that would be his moment, wouldnt? The moment when Ferguson would no longer depend on Rooney. The moment where he would be able to get rid of Rooney without looking weak. The moment we would be able to sell Rooney and still strenghten.

Obviously far fetched, but before everyone starts putting up the laughing smiley (while really beeing pissed of by silly speculations), how many think Ferguson have forgiven Rooney for his outburst against the club? Rooney is not a bigger player for this club than Keane or Beckham ever was. Scots know how to bear grudge, and I bet Ferguson would love to call Rooney and tell him he is out. Gill could then call Roman..

And btw, do we need both? Welbeck do a hell of a job covering up for Rooney in defence. Persie would not. Would we manage to keep the two of them, Kagawa, Valencia, Nani, Young and maybe Lucas happy? Without hurting Welbecks development? That eight players on four spots, and we have not even mentioned Hernandez and some of the talents from our acadamy! If Ferguson are beeing honest, someone are leaving.

Most likely Nani, but why offer an extension? feck it, sell the bald, fat one with an attitude instead..

Oh FFS you've done it now, I'm out of here.

This is not looking like a popular opinion but I personally would love it.

And here's that post auto-translated into Finnish... just so no Finnish people miss out on it just cos they can't speak English.

Gill voisi kutsua Roman ..

Ja btw, me tarvitsemme molempia?

I doubt he will come. He has a lot of respect for Wenger. Probably similar to Fabregas. He'll go abroad. There will be plenty of takers.

I love Danny Welbeck but he's feck all of a footballer next to Van Persie. Whether you want to take development time away from Danny is another thing of course.

I would rather Welbeck but RvP would provide another WC dimension to our attack that wasn't the result of a combination.

I'd be one of the first to kick the scouser out of the club, but not for RvP. Now, if it was aguero instead of RvP that we were talking about (pre-city aguero naturally), and we were bringing in additional firepower on top of aguero like we seem to be interested in lucas, then yes Rooney would be out of the club for me.

But SAF is not going to dump rooney out for anyone, so it is a bit silly.

They wont find it hard at all.

You are talking about Robin?
Club yes. on pitch, No.

We won't find it hard. Ungrateful, disrespectful cnut.

Get rid of our best player because we bring another top player in? Madness, how about keeping Rooney and adding top class players around him!

...yeah, loads of respect. Coming out and stating openly he won't sign a new contract and questioning the club's ambition? A massive dig at Wenger's transfer policy.

If he wasn't wanting to stay in the PL he wouldn't even be talking to other clubs and it seems clear he (or his agent) have been in contact with City and United at the very least.

He may yet go to Italy, but it seems there's a good chance he wants to stay here.

Let's not sugercoat this. Him wanting to leave is perfectly understandable but its anything but respectful to publicly come out and demand you want to leave a club which has stuck by your injury-prone frustrations for almost a decade.

I agree. However its also disrespectful to claim that your club is ambitious to keep players happy when in practice its not. Arsenal has been crying out for new top quality players to replace those who retired/left for years.
