Robin van Persie

I just skim read the comments here so I may have missed a few decent posts but I think many people are forgetting something important - his contract is almost up! It means he has much more say in where he goes. If he wants to go to a club (lets say United for sake of argument) then all he has to do is refuse all other offers (even if Arsenal accept other bids over United's). The worst case scenario is he sits and signs in January for free. It is in Arsenals financial interests to accept the offers of teams RVP is interested in joining, otherwise they could lose him for free in a few months.

I'm not so sure. Without RvP, arsenal would not have got 3rd and into the CL this year.

Unless a daft bid comes in, I could see wenger keeping RvP if he is not sure he can get talent in with the RvP money just so he has a good chance of getting into top 3/4 next time around.

i think RvP would be professional enough where he would play hard and well even in his last year then go off on a free

I agree, although I don't think Wenger has all the say. The board/owner/CFO might demand that a transfer take place in order to get some cash.

What's £15m in today's game though?

If Van Persie is the difference between them getting into the CL in 2013/14, then it's more profitable to keep him, even if he goes for nothing.

So the only team, other than one managed by possibly the greatest football manager of all time, to do it was bankrolled by a billionaire. Which only suggests that statistic isn't as relevant given we're talking about City, a team bankrolled by an even richer guy. It's never easy to win a title forget defend one successful, but it is easier when you've got such financial to fall back on every summer.

A better Arsenal team couldn't defend it on more than one occasion. Chelsea defended it thanks to Utd being much worse than they are currently.

Fergie confirms that we are in for RVP. ESPN says the bid was 12.5m. Absolute pisstake

Speaking to MUTV, Ferguson said: "Obviously Arsenal have given out the fact that we've made a bid for him. We try to keep business as close as possible to us until the moment we conclude a deal. There's no point talking about something that might not happen.

"There are other clubs interested in the player. We've shown an interest and that's where we're at at the moment."

It starts to make more sense when you think about it despite the negatives. He's a £30m player who we could pick up for under £15m.

I doubt we'll go much higher, we're just looking for value.

City it is then

I think the transfer Muppets have cause Fergie to lose his mind. I imagine him frantically faxing offers through left right and centre for all his favourite players. Its only a matter of time until Madrid confirm that Fergie has made enquiries into the availability of Zidane.

Juventus doesn't rhyme though does it?

Juventus definitely need a striker. Their top scorer last season scored 10 goals. They won't overpay though. So Wenger's option might be to let RvP go for cheap to prevent another Premier League team getting him. In that sense Juventus would make sense. Other than that I don't see too many clubs being interested in van Persie. Bayern? No. Barca and Real? Definitely no. Both Milan clubs? Nah, both skint. Inter had to get rid of Eto'o and Milan from Ibrahimovic. That only leaves United, City and Juventus. I wouldn't be surprised AT ALL if he left for around € 15 million due to his age, contract situation and his official statement on his homepage.

Maybe he's letting his old mate Arry conduct transfer business for him.

But like Twisted Woody said, if he doesn't want to go there, he wont. He has a big say in his destination, and if Arsenal want to offload him somewhere abroad to prevent him playing in the PL and he wants to stay in England, he'll more than likely be playing in the PL next season.

Again, think it'll be us or City. Got a feeling it wont be us. That would be too epic.

That's true of course. But if I'm not mistaken he himself and his father declared that he couldn't play for any other club in England. Of course this doesn't mean much nowadays but damn he would be hated in the Emirates if he joined United / City like that.

When was the last time Ferguson mentioned that we we were in for a certain player to the journos?

I hope he does sign for us and doesn't follow suit to all the rest of his ex arsenal chums that moved to City.

Maybe Wenger might let us take him.........it would be more embarassing for Arsenal if they lost another of their best players to the bitters.

He'd be hated but I think he'd get over that when he got his pay packet. Juventus looks the best bet if it's not City.

Why is it embarrassing? If you don't have the money there's nothing you can do. Were you embarrassed at losing Tevez or not signing Nasri?

He will go for a price similar to Nasri's and most likely more. Considering we paid 18 million for Young in a similar contract situation the 12 million being reported must be bullshit.

Ashley Cole went from Arsenal to a local rival; he wasn't put off by prospective abuse.

Utd didn't 'lose' Tevez. Had they wanted to keep him they would have. He also wasn't the 5th player to make the move in the space of a few years.
