Robin van Persie

People have been saying this for about six years now, and every year one or both, usually both, are among our best players.

One year it will have to be true, one would think, but every year it's said so authoritatively and it's based on nothing.

Fergie said it will be their last year. In terms of productivity, this is going to be Giggsy's last gasp. Scholes, despite being very effective since the beginning of this year, is probably going to permanently retire as well next summer (as per Fergie).

I'm struggling to understand why we would be interested.

No doubt he's a quality player but we don't really need a forward. His wages are likely to be very high and so far he's had one injury free season.

48 - Robin van Persie scored the same number of goals in his first 139 PL games as he has in his last 55 (since Jan 1 2011). Coveted. -- Opta Sports (@OptaJoe)

This should also be taken into account

He's right beside Ibra in terms of being the best striker in the world at the moment. How anyone can say "do not want" to a world class player is beyond me. Just shows the extent to which FM fanaticism has infested the sensibilities of fans these days.

Absolute rubbish

He faded towards the end, other than that he was excellent, yet again.

Yeah he could go on for a couple of more seasons, I think. Livvie was telling me that he's become rubbish because he misplaced a few passes last season...but who doesn't? that said, when he's having a mare...he's really bad.

I think that Cavani is up there too, and at 25 years old he'd be a much better option than RVP. Probably would be available for around £25-30 million aswell.

EDIT: 66 goals for Napoli in 2 seasons.

Can you set it up as a default to an automatic infraction.

Does it feck. Many perfectly legitimate reasons for not wanting him have been given.

Perfectly legitimate like what ? "Do not want" or "We need a CM" ?? Let's face it. The "Do no want" brigade are playing FM by suggesting he would be too expensive and that our priorities should be to sign a CM, despite the fact that Fergie has other plans.

Absolute rubbish. Some of us are more concerned about the effect this will have on our younger strikers. If anything it is you that has been playing too much FM.

This isn't going to happen.

I've lost count of the amount of times people mindlessly throw in a "you play FM so you have a veiled, stupid opinion" argument into things lately.

All signs indicate we are interested. If it happens, Welbeck and Hernandez will have to live with it.

If it happens I wouldn't blame either or both for leaving, especially Welbeck. Then we can rely upon the player with a bad injury record, whilst Welbeck turns into a better striker elsewhere. Sounds extreme, but I wouldn't bet against any of that happening.

If Persie's coming, Berba is propably going and we definitely have funds on that type of surprise move.

Rooney, Persie, Welbeck, Hernandez... Would be almost like Cole, Yorke, Sheringham, Solskjaer.

Doubtful. I would be surprised if any of them left. They're both professionals and would adapt to the new order.

Good point. We're obviously capable of utilizing such a system.

It would be interesting to know what club he wants a move to. I'm sure he has 'dreams of Madrid' and Barca, but a move to them two clubs doesn't seem possible right now.

He probably didn't want to upset Arsenal fans by moving to another team in England, but it looks like he's gonna have too. Or stay at Arsenal.

Kagawa is an attacking midfielder (or for FM players, an Advanced Playmaker ) he is not a forward / striker!

If he plays in that position it leaves only one striking position, not two.

Not so long ago, Gill said something like 'We will compete' on a transfer market.

Maybe his words really shall have impact on reality, or maybe we're just transfer muppets on high, again.

Welbeck is too good to be playing second fiddle. He may stick around for now but when he finds himself playing carling cup fixtures and the easier premiership ficxtures, he'll soon be gone.

Lets not bother aguing that there's enough games for all of them because, lets face it, Rooney is going to start most games, Kagawa will be given a fair chance and Van Persie would probably start most games too. Look how little we used Berbatov last season.

What a dunce. Do you think he'll take the place of a midfielder or a striker? Come on...you can work it out. You can hear the cogs turning.

Probably a midfielder, according to lot we haven't got any so he'll fit right in :wenger:

fecking dunce.

Again I'll have to mention that signing someone considered a brilliant player when we have good prospects isnt the end of the world. Welbeck is a local United fan and Hernandez from all accounts has loved his time here. Both would without doubt work their socks off to compete with RVP and the truth is even Rooney would have to make sure his game is in top nick to ensure he doesnt miss games.

Working hard enough and improving the right aspects of their game, either one or both could end up better players than RVP. Sometimes thats what happens when you sign a well respected, talented player and they have to compete with one of your young talents

Look at how it went with Veron and Scholes. Scholes took it to another level when he had that competition and made it clear he was the first option. Its easy to point fingers at Veron and say he didnt quite live up to expectations but how do you put a figure on how much more we got out of Scholes having to compete with a pass master like that?

I'm not saying we should sign "world class" players in each position so every young player we have is forced to train and play better than them, and end up better players for the club. But if we do sign someone of real quality in a certain position where we have good young players, its not the end of the world. Unlike Wenger's philosophy, I remember when he said that signing a midfielder would "kill" Denilson  While I'm sure he's still glad he doesnt have blood on his hands, its not like not getting good players to compete with him really made him a better player. Look where he is now

People keep saying this, but with Kagawa, when Rooney goes through his annual shit phase at least with Kagawa we have another top class alternative rather than just waiting for him to snap out of it........

I don't think Rooney has ever been benched except for disciplinary reasons - I doubt Fergie will start now.

Ideally, if this happens, Welbeck would already have signed a new contract by then. I'd prefer to keep Welbeck than signing RVP.

You don't know that. Players get injured, suspended, lose form etc. 60 plus games will provide plenty of chances for everyone to get minutes. At the end of the day, having more players to choose from will benefit us. We needn't look any further than our defensive crises last winter and the winter before for evidence of this.

Its a false choice. We can easily maintain four strikers through rotation over a 60 plus fixture season.

Perhaps that was because we never had anybody close to his ability to fill in?

Pretty sure he did get dropped a few times in the past.
