Robin van Persie

Bleh... as always in these situations, he'll go to City... because they're the champions and they'll throw a shit load of money at him.

If Arsene just ignored his youth policy for a minute and had a think... he would try and get Berba off us in some sort of deal, he'd be a great addition for Arsenal in my opinion.

Not a bad shout, but swap deals rarely happen.

I am not sure if he would pick city if the wages on offer are similar but certainly if they offered him over 200k per week I think that would be hard to turn down.

But, given the players city have upfront, I'm not too sure they will be prepared to break the bank for RVP.

If its a footballing decision United is the better option for RVP, moneywise its no contest, City.

I dont think we will get him.

True enough.

Which is why I never understand the amount of time 'swap-deals' appear as part of newspaper rumours. Pretty much every day you read the line "with player x moving the other way" ... yet such deals never actually happen!

People seem remarkably sanguine around here about his injury record. It seems like people think there is a risk he will be plagued by injuries, but a good chance he wont be. To me it feels like he is close to being a nailed on certainty to be plagued by injuries, with a very small chance he will maintain the fitness he has managed for one season. Hence, even £15m - with, presumably, very generous wages - seems a poor investment.

Maybe I am being too negative about his prospects. I have always thought he was a great player. Still, dont want him.

/\ And yes, I also agree with AN in the sense that he is a great player and would improve us, given he would be one of the best players on our books. But he would also be strengthening us in a position where we are already strong. Despite the fact that we have areas of the pitch where we are considerably weaker. But what do I know? SAF judged that we needed a new winger last summer, and similar arguments applied there. Maybe if we just keep on signing great forwards our midfield problems will just magically resolve themselves. Or maybe having RVP in the team will magically turn Jones into Busquets.

Spot on

Except that I'm pretty sure we're not actually trying to buy him

I made a thread on this but everyone laughed at my spelling of swop/swap even though it was proved to be correct...:(

 Swoop deals! I remember that thread.

Yeah, I also made a thread about it in the newbies. I said "swap deals"... nobody laughed

Based on what?

He seems keen to win titles by all accounts, money appears (for once) to be secondary.

Top player, (seeingly) good attitude - just a bit concered about injuries. But at a decent price he's well worth the risk.

I'd say £250k p/w is not worth the risk for a soon to be 29 year old who you would get 2/3 years out of him before he starts to decline.

I think there are better options out there

Kagawa, Van Persie and Lucas. 4-1-5 (3-1-6?) here we come!

Arsenal reject Manchester United's bid for Robin van Persie
Arsenal want at least £20 for striker

fecking Glazers.. wont even let Fergie spend 20 quid

edit: they corrected it now.

... feck it, I'm sure 20 of us can put a £1 in?!

I'll settle for Rooney, Welbeck and Chicharito and happily let City put Cat Persie among Tevez's pigeons.

I am salivating at the prospect of Rooney and RvP in the same team, but this still strikes me as a baffling development. How is Kagawa meant to get into the team if we stick with 4-4-2 and play those 2 upfront week in week out? (which we would. you don't drop 2 world class strikers).

Very odd.

I honestly do not think we need him. I'm quite happy with our current front 3. I don't want Welbeck/Hernandez dropping a place below Van Persie. He's a great player but not sure if he'll be a hindrance or not

If he is available for 20 mil, then that to me is a bargain. I don't care that he's in the last year of his contract, you're getting one of the world's best strikers in his prime for nearly the same price we paid for Ashley Young. He comes with a hefty wage, of course, but for a player who doesn't really rely on physicality, he could play well into his 30s at an elite level. Could be our Bergkamp.

We're not going to use midfielders anymore.

David O Shea
Valencia - Rio -Vidic - Evra
Rooney - Kagawa - Lucas -
Nani - RVP - Welbeck

I'm sure SAF's use of rotation would give everyone plenty of games.

One of the best strikers around would be a hinderance? Really?

Yeah I'm still very sceptical that we actually made that bid. Not one solitary quote in that article, and the chances are we've leaked to someone that we're talking of making a bid (£12m?), which The Guardian have decided would get rejected anyway.

Although if we have actually made a bid it certainly signals some intent from our side, and £20m would be a very fair price. You've got to look at it from two angles. One, we're signing him, and two, City aren't. Think of the difference between us having RVP, and City having him - pretty big difference, and if we did win the league on the back of this signing, thinking about the long term, it'd look very good for us.

Well we wasn't just going to make a starting bid of £20M was we, it's all about the negotiation, we'll strike a deal eventually with Arsenal on this nearer to the £20M mark.

I don't like to 'stick my neck out' on deals anymore, but for some reason (and I probably won't be liked by many for this) I really think we're going to sign RVP... and Lucas. :nervous:

That's the same argument I've made plenty of times here when talking about players, but RvP isn't a player to rotate like you would Welbeck or Hernandez or Young or Valencia, and we've already added Kagawa in that position.

Just seems a bit weird. Not impossible to work, just weird.

Out of respect for Arsenal and Wenger, I don't see him staying in the Premier League. I bet he goes to Madrid.

I doubt it, selling our second best player, probably for cheaper than we'd be buying this unproven 19 year old for? Senseless.

Yes, but it's equally as senseless to buy a winger, an attacking midfielder and a striker, when truth is...we're a bit weak in a certain area of the pitch.
