Robin van Persie

Well, in a normal season we play about 55 games, so that's 110 starts for two strikers.

If Rooney starts 40, van Persie 35, Kagawa 20 and Welbeck 15, that's 110. Add another 5-10 games each for Welbeck and Kagawa in other positions + sub appearanbes, and there's enough games for all four.

That's only 4 off my numbers for league games, so we agree.

I had 11 for Welbeck and Chich - so 8 and 3 respectively.

You have 15 for them in all competitions, but just havent given Hernandez any.

Ah yeah, knew my maths would fail me there.

Anyway, I'm not going to argue this any further, because we can't even say, "We'll see what happens when he signs", because it just won't happen. We may as well be talking about how to fit Ronaldo into the team.

So rotating four attackers is very doable, as I said.

Have to say I'm not 100% convinced we're going to sign a player who'll be 29 by the start of the season, with a history of major injuries, on massive wages, from one of our biggest rivals, in a position we don't need to reinforce. Call me overly sceptical...

Well no, because you have Hernandez not making any starts, in any competition, all season. How would that ever happen?

You also vaguely reckon Welbeck will get up to 10 games in other postions, which won't happen. We already have Nani and Young who can play left wing and then are bringing in Kagawa who plays there internationally. So I'd be surprised if he started a single game on the left wing next season.

So 15 starts in all competitions isn't close to the 30ish he got this season, let alone the fact that you have given Hernandez a ridiculous 0.

Doubt it myself.

But Sir Alex does like van Persie, and if it is the nove the player really want it might just be a question of the correct price.

Because I reckon Hernandez will be surplus to requirements in this case. He might get the odd game here and there, but would be in thhe stands for 90% of the season.

It also raises the question of which friend of Sir Alex's spilled the beans on his Persie-love. I'm guessing Gordon Brown:

"Work the left wing but then switch suddenly to the right"
"Aye that worked well for you yae radge."

My guess is that transvestite performer he enjoys.

i don't want him as he called his son shaqueel, the only thing i like being called shaqueel is my women.

Right, I'll be realistic here, and give my opinion, that if everyone stays fit (which, being for United, you're guaranteed not to) and post how many games I'd say each player could start.

38 league games
4 COC games
4 FA Cup games
10 UCL games

Multiplied by 6 (midfielders + strikers) = 56 x 6 = 336 starts.

Carrick - 30
Powell - 5
Cleverley - 15
Scholes - 15
Giggs - 10
Anderson - 15
Nani - 35
Young - 25
Valencia - 35
Kagawa - 30
Hernandez - 15
Welbeck - 15
Rooney - 50
RVP - 40

They're approximations, and it still leaves 6 extra games in there. We could go further in the cups, players could () get injured, and I wouldn't say any of those figures are too unrealistic, unless my maths has been way off. And they're starts, so that ignores sub appearances.

And Theon, two strikers, one being a deep lying Rooney, two wingers, both offering defensive support, as they do, one attacking midfielder, one defensive. Kagawa could be the attacking midfielder, assuming the work rate is there from the rest of the team, which with Rooney, Valencia and Nani in, it would be.

I thought I'd stumbled across the Pakistani Opta Index site when I saw that.

Sir Alex on Welbeck:"He got 9 last season but if you are going to be a top striker you have to get 20 or above.I think he'll do that."

Maybe reading too much into it and not directly related to Van Persie. But just goes to show how highly does Sir Alex rates Danny.

What is the obsession with starts all about? Sheringham and Solksjaer rarely started any games of significance, yet how would you view their contributions to our success overall?

It is all about contributing whenever you are needed, not how many games you start or don't start. Hernandez will not start many games period imo, because i see little difference between his role and the one Solksjaer played.

He will come off the bench and offer us an attacking threat in the latter part of games if we need a goal. The likes of Rooney and Welbeck offer far more generally and that is why they would naturally start more games. If RVP comes he will offer more playing as a lone striker than either Rooney or Welbeck, so in games where SAF sees that particular requirement RVP would start and Welbeck won't.

It's really that simple. SAF may buy RVP or he may not, but if he does go for him, it can only be because he feels what we have already is insufficient for the way he wants the team to play.

Fergie has always rated Welbeck highly. It was a running joke here couple years back and I remember that poster Nani Nana saying Fergie must have been in love with Welbeck for picking him over Tosic.

I can't see us signing Van Persie at all to be honest.

becks, and RvN wanted to leave almost every year he was here (put in multiple transfer requests only to be squashed by SAF) and when he goes to madrid, he becomes pichichi and won the league as their main hitman more times than he won the league here.

Doesn't matter what RVN did afterwards, SAF wanted him gone; Real didn't force our hand, same goes for Beckham who had actually been sold off to Barca first.

this was just posted on a United Facebook page, OK its Facebook so it is taken with a large pinch of salt and quote is from the Mirror

Manchester United believe they have won the £20million race to sign Robin van Persie. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is confident the Arsenal captain will team up with Wayne Rooney to form a formidable strike-force in a rebuilt side he hopes can win back the title.

I don't quite get how the side is rebuilt with the addition of RVP & Kagawa.

I honestly can't see the lure of Juve? Serie A is heading downhill, they don't pay extreme wages with Buffon being the highest earner at 6 million euro a year and they are trying to convince him to lower that to 4 million euro a year. They also have a small stadium and probably won't go far in CL next season and the weather in Turin isn't much different to the English weather. Would be a really strange transfer if he joined Juve over City and United.
