* He's fecking ancient.
* His arms and legs are hanging off.
* He costs billions.

* He'll give us five good years.
* He played every game last season.
* Player of the Year on the cheap!

That'll do! Thanks mate.

Not neccesarily if Rooney tracks back as he would in that formation. Not to mention clev has far more mobility than scholes which will help Carrick out and the full backs defensively. I'd be more concerned about the effectiveness off Rooney outwide.

True. And forcing Rooney to defend will reduce his effectiveness even more.

Yeah, though I suppose it would be more of a fluid than set systems. Can see that front four all moving around, maybe sacrifice the individual goals that Rooney/RVP as the main striker would give you for a system that allows them all a chance to shine.

Id prefer that tbh. Let's get back to the days when goals came from all over the team and not just from one or 2 players.

It makes us far more unpredictable and therefore difficult to prepare against. Just like we were at the start of last season. Goals and assists galore, from 4 or 5 players all operating in advanced areas.

The difference now is that we will also have a bit more stability with Carrick and Scholes sitting in front of the back 4 too. We now have the option of going wide or coming inside to create chances, and our players will be much harder to isolate as a result.

I know many are not in favour of RVP, and i understand that. But for me we would have a player who excels at holding the ball up and can score regularly in that role without much service or support. In Europe we will also have an effective out ball even when playing 4-5-1, which at times we have suffered from not having against the very top teams.

We just have to cross our fingers and hope he is fit when we really need him. A concern it has to be said, but in my view far less a concern, and far less problematic to our effectiveness than if Carrick were to get injured at any point.

i really think that if we are after him and terms are agreed his medical will be as strict as fook. With his record it has to be otherwise we are getting a donkey for 20 odd million!

Im sure the manager has had enough of long term injuries to players at this stage

Thing is I can definitely see the benefit of RVP, he would undoubtedly make the attack stronger and give as good an alternative to Rooney that you could hope to have.

But for me I'm still hesitant, particularly after seeing Kagawa. I've always said we need to get back to having someone in the hole on a regular basis. A lot of the problems people have with our midfield can partly be attributed to the fact that more often then not there's a big gap between the attackers and the strikers. You need that link player to let the midfield get involved more and also in games where we are being pressed having a player with quality drifting into space near the midfielders would relieve so much pressure imo.

I know Rooney has done that role but for me in recent seasons not only has he not played deep enough but his form has fluctuated too much for me. I think he's better off as the main striker than in a deeper role now. That's my main concern with RVP. Both of these guys were once better number 10s but now I think they're best as out and out strikers. In previous seasons we've not had anyone other than rooney who could do that role, well berba but he's been out of favour. Now kagawa could do it with Rooney leading the line.

On the other side I could definitely see the potential in the system I suggested above as long as someone does drift in to that space and with Valencia likely to play some games at right back, in terms of game time it could work out.

End of the day as I've said before although I think we could be better served investing the money elsewhere at the same time I would never say no to a world class player.

Most transfers that drag on are boring and frustrating, especially now days that the internet has an unregulated gossip column that is practically the tool of all tools for transfer muppetry; twitter.

Robin van Persie is closing in on a sensational £20million-plus move after Arsenal officially began negotiations with Manchester United.

The Mirror can reveal the two clubs spent Tuesday night talking about a deal which could now be pushed through before the Premier League kick-off this weekend.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is likely to settle on a fee of just above £20m as United prepare to increase their offer for the Dutch forward, who is currently on international duty but won't be in the starting line-up when Holland play Belgium on Wednesday night.

It is understood the clubs are very close to agreement on a fee.

Just filed by John Cross, Mirror running with it as their exclusive

 get in 'possibly maybe could he? will he? practically done almost medical'

also  Clichy was one of the better LB's last year and even I was someone who thought he would flop and was shite.

Something has to be happening. It would be quite amazing if all 4 papers got it spectacularly wrong together.

One paper's journo reads twitter and decides to base his exclusive on one of yesterday's tweets from those 'never got it wrong before' types.
The rest of the papers think the journo may be onto something and copy the story and claim it as their own.

Likely scenario.

Interesting that it's only the Guardian (maybe The Times as well) that doesn't do that. They keep others papers' stories to a Transfer Rumours section and only post stories if they themselves have the info.

Sorry to ruin things, but that's not how it happens.

If Arsenal take a deal with add ons based on winning things they are plums, even worse than I thought.

I'm not happy about this really, it has what the feck written all over it.

I have a feeling Rooney and RVP would go together like some things that go really well together.

I hate to over pay for players, especially ones in their late 20s BUT we need a boost to get the title back from City and RVP is well capable of giving us the edge.

It is actually. Newspapers are so frightened of being behind with the news that as soon as one publishes something, all the others follow. They'd rather get something wrong than miss out on something true.

So what number will he be then? Berba needs shifting quickly if he wants the #9 shirt.
