For those who say 20m is overpaying, I say:

Downing
Carroll
Henderson

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is likely to settle on a fee of just above £20m as United prepare to increase their offer for the Dutch forward, who is currently on international duty but won't be in the starting line-up when Holland play Belgium on Wednesday night.

What are the odds that after all this waiting he comes on late and gets injured just in time for his medical? :smirk:

That's quite a bit of commitment on that statement, didn't expect that at all.

WTF happened with the Carroll loan/transfer anyway? Only just realised I didn't follow that, looked like a pretty obvious deal for Liverpool to push through...

I have a bad feeling about this one.

I think we want him (met whatever their price) and he wants to come to us. But I think Arsenal are not willing to do business with us. I hope I'm wrong.

A quartet of Rooney, Van Persie, Welbeck and Hernandez will definitely rival Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Solskjaer.

It might be because I'm watching the Newsroom... But im getting really excited about the breaking news aspect of the last 48 hours

Rival?? Better, I doubt you can make the argument that any of the 99 quartet are amongst the best 5 in the world, but Rooney & RVP have very valid case.

However, Keane & 99 Scholes v Carrick & 12 Scholes... :(

That article's look like it's been written by a 10 year old.
Random capitalization of letters, i.e. "Arsenal has spent a lot of money by their standards on Three international players." no quotes, and a whole lot of 'by their standards' crap which just sounds like it's there to reach a specified word count (with opinions!)

The "Juventus and both Manchester clubs where in for the Arsenal man." doesn't help either.

I have a feeling it's a matter of if rather than when...

How can you take that 'website' seriously?

The great thing about football is that every football fan has an opinion. We shouldn’t have signed him. We aren’t going to win anything with him in charge. How could we let him go???? Well why should you keep your thoughts to yourself? Football is all about the fans! This is where we come in. Bread & Butter Football is a place for you to get your views out there and broadcast by us to football fans just like you! Find out what we’re all about here!

So from the sounds of it literally anybody could write an article on there, and then there's the article itself - littered with spelling mistakes and errors:

Newly crowned Seria A Champions Juventus

Juventus and both Manchester clubs where in

Van persie’s interest

Manchester city manager

until they got Adebayor and Santa Cruz of the clubs

for Van Persie, Twice in fact,

By the End of this week or early next week,

Awful.

The telegraph is going more conservative:

United indicated that they were ready to improve their initial bid of around £12 million, which was rejected, and, while the two clubs remain apart in their valuations, they were locked in talks on Tuesday night.
United are understood to be Van Persie’s preferred destination but they are reluctant to spend more than £15 million on someone who is 29 and has a mixed injury record.
Arsenal have made it clear that they want at least £20 million for their captain and star player but there is now a hope that, with add-ons, agreement could be reached on a compromise deal.

Would be nice to get this wrapped up before Mondays game. Arsenal play Saturday right? Think if it's not done and dusted by then you will have an indication of the outcome by whether RVP features for Le Arse.

feck sake, I really hope this doesn't happen.
Yeah, I hate it when we're in for world-class players too.

Improving the squad?! I mean what the feck is this horseshit?

No offense intended mate, it's not exactly a popular view you've got, but you are entitled to it.

I think this is a crazy transfer. It addresses an issue we did not have, and leaves the central midfield and left back situations unresolved.

But the team and the fans need some kind of shot in the arm. So if its this or nothing then I guess it will have to be this.

bah humbug

you don't want to add a world class attacking talent to the squad for what reason?

Injury prone, don't think he'll fit in all that well, pushes back welbecks development, puts the writing on the wall for Hernandez and I can think of much better ways to spend £20m. Good enough for you?

Happy to be proved wrong.

It's Fergie in muppet mode.

Who really cares about the LB situation? I don't, cause we won't be buying anyone there who will improve our 1st team.

CM... well, as I said yesterday, give it up, SAF has bought his missing link already. Kagawa and Carrick are nailed on when we play 3 in there, and Cleverley, Anderson, Scholes, Powell etc etc will take the final spot.

What buying RVP does is take us from having one WC (albeit inconsistent) forward, and 2 promising players, to having 2 WC forwards in our squad. Make no mistake, it would be a superb signing. We're talking about buying the best player in the league from last season and some of you are whinging that it make take some game time away from your ickel favouritey players.... ? get a grip ffs.

It addresses several important issues imo:
- Are we attractive to world class players?
- Are we in the market to buy world class players?
- Do we have the finances to buy world class players, even if the player does not cover immediate and obvious needs?
- Do we have a desire to compete with the very best teams in the world?
- Do we have a desire to see the world's best pair of strikers in our first eleven?
- Will our owners agree to pay for this if SAF thinks it is the right thing to do?

I support this potential transfer, as it provides many good answers and opportunities

how does it push back welbecks development if RVP is injury prone? Hernandez will get plenty of games but what he has to do is regain his confidence. A confident Hernandez was able to keep out a technically better player in Berbatov.

I know people talk about midfield but I'm almost certain Sir Alex has thought about that.

This is true, there are plenty of games in the season and if you don't think he'll feature at all then you can't have seen many United games.

And considering how well Danny can play in a wider role, I would discount him getting plenty of game time in a 4-3-3 too. For example:

Code:
[CENTER]Rooney
Welbeck RVP
Kagawa

Cleverley Carrick[/CENTER]

There are literally tonnes of possibilities for all our players to force a way into any formation even if RVP ends up here.

I agree, many of our fans are to fickle to think in that way.How come any of our fans will have prob on signing a world class player is beyond beggar belief.

Van Gaal on the RvP situation :

Holland boss Louis van Gaal has revealed he has spoken with Robin van Persie over where his club future lies but insists the decision ultimately comes down to the sought-after striker.

Speculation continues to surround the Arsenal captain, who is being heavily linked with both Manchester clubs this summer following his revelation he does not intend to sign a new contract at Emirates Stadium.

The 29-year-old has been dropped from Van Gaal's starting line-up for Holland's international friendly with Belgium on Wednesday night and the coach is keen to see him settle his future ahead of the Oranje's impending World Cup qualifiers.

But the experienced coach knows only Van Persie, who scored 30 league goals last season, can decide where his future lies.
Advice

Van Gaal told a press conference aired on Sky Sports: "I think the player always has to decide for himself.

"When he wants he can ask me for advice but then I'll speak to him, not to you."

He added: "I had the conversation and it was unbelievable. A great and high level, not only at a human side but also in the football vision. It was one of the best meetings I've had with an individual player."

Asked whether it was important, with next month's qualifiers against Turkey and Hungary looming, that Van Persie decided his future sooner rather than later, the former Barcelona boss added: "Yes, of course. But it's for the English clubs, and Arsenal of course, to decide."
