Robin van Persie

Yeah in terms of whether he gets sold on Arsenal decide to make him see out his contract.

They've sorted out his replacements, all that's left is for the board to decide whether they want 20mil now and take the risk of maybe not getting 4th this season, OR keeping him and forgetting about the money - if van Persie is up for it mentally.

In this day and age...I just don't think this is THAT big a deal.

Surely they have to. Something defending the club's ambition; along the lines of what Fergie said during the Rooney fiasco. Not sure how they can say it with a straight face mind.

I did.

Jesus Christ, City are offering him 250K a week and an opportunity to compete for all the biggest trophies. The powers that be at Le Arse must be smoking crack or something.

He's gone. They can't make him stick around for a final year. Take the £20m and move on.

Predictable really, this is the reason we signed Podolski and/or Giroud, we pretty much knew he was on his way (you can read this club like a book).

A big loss without a doubt, we lose a guy who has shown he can score goals and our best player and bring in two strikers who will take time to adapt, whilst I think they are good signings losing RVP is a bad thing for us.

We need some investment in the team and fast.

He might still do a Rooney and end up staying.
200k should do it,.

Rooney quite clearly did it to bump his wages...RvP didn't even get into $$$ when he spoke with the head honchos at Arsenal.

He wants trophies...Arsenal could match whatever City offered and he'd still not sign a new contract.

Classy from Van Persie, always thought he was a prick.

Can't blame him for wanting out but there's a way to go about your business, he's been there a long time.

Rooney didnt get into $$ either when he handed in his transfer request in Aug.

Apparently there is/was a second round of talks due...but hasn't he burned his bridges?

And about burning bridges.. is it any worse than issuing a statement hours before an important CL match?

That said, I dont think Arse will bend over for Van Persie like we did for Rooney. He is more than a player for us. He has become the (fat, ugly) face of the "brand"

Mansour should have just bought the whole Arsenal squad when he took over at city.

I actually respect him for coming out in the way he did.

Someone has to make it clear that the club are not remotely ambitious. I'm glad he said the things he did. It might inspire a little bit of action.

City it is so, they will pay em stupid money and he will be fighting for trophies. Could that be the end of Tevez possibly? He's gonna do a fair bit more bench warming now along with Balotelli and and we all know he's a Whiney cnut.

Arsenal will certainly take the money now and run with it. No point in seeing out his contract if he wants to go. Let's just hope his missus likes the idea of living in Italy.

I think he has announced it at the correct time and gone the right way about it.

What else was he to do? If he stays quiet it is far worse.

That is done and dusted now.

Can't blame him....Arsenal are years from being title contenders. They are basically now just a high quality feeder team which leaves RVP at a stage where he's got only 2-3 years at the very top (that's if he doesn't get injured again). He needs to start winning and that's never going to happen at Arsenal.

This might be Wenger's last year.

The side has not progressed for about 8 years now.

He has managed to keep them a top 4 side. But the title looks further away every year.

I've not been worried about an Arse title challenge for many years.

He should call it a day.

The angle which no-one's mentioned on this yet is his family - he has a wife who claimed that she loved living in the city, and he has young kids in school.

The situation is basically this - RVP is so disaffected with what Wenger and Gazidis have planned for Arsenal that he's willing to take his kids out of school and move them to either Manchester, or maybe even Turin, because he doesn't see himself ever staying at Arsenal.

If that isn't a complete indictment of the Arsenal manager and board, I really don't know what is. What kind of contract negotiations don't even go as far as money?

Are you having a laugh? He did well to compete with us, he should not be hounded for failing to compete with City and Chelsea, I simply cannot understand the criticism for Wenger/Arsenal in these situations, it's simply a harsh reality in an unfair sport.

The issue (money) is in the sport, not with the players or with the clubs/managers. These 'shortcomings' are products of the grasp money has over football, not the other way round.

I find the sport harder and harder to like each week, and seeing fans criticising Wenger leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Mother of god don't let it be city. He's always come across a bit of a cnut so not surprised he's gone behind Arsenal's back with the announcement. Still it's obviously the right career move, he's at the stage where he needs trophies.

I've defended him and the board for years. But not after last summer, where it became clear there was no plan for the future. The sooner there is a change on the board, the better. That should be the priority.

Why do Arse lack ambition, Alastair? I think your hands are tied.

If you discount the two sugar-daddy clubs (which Arsenal obviously can't hope to compete with) then they are only behind United in England. Surely that is about what you'd expect from them?

I think we could do more. There are many issues at Arsenal right now relating to incompetence, and I think that is one of the reasons we can't actually be ambitious.

We obviously have the problem with the poor players on high wages thing, which prevents us from doing some business, but I really just don't believe we have any ambition to improve the side considerably until FFP comes in. It's like the club is just waiting for 2014.

As I say, no-one wants us to spend £100m. But £30-40m net on signings who could improve us? Why not?
