Come on devilish, you're trying to pull out the pre-season stats? We scored a hell of a lot of goals last year. It wasn't until this year that RVP was tagged as a "natural goalscorer," being played as the central striker - but Rooney scores a tonne just like him, Berbatov is far more lethal than you're giving him credit for, and Welbeck just needs a bit of composure. RVP would be a great signing but I think you're using the wrong stick to beat his signing's critics with.
To be honest I have mixed feelings about this deal myself. RVP is certainly a great player but he's 29 and injury prone.
However I kind of understand the thought behind such signing. As I said in the previous post Rooney is a fantastic player and players with such talent tend to score piles of goals but he's not comfortable in leading the line. Welbeck represents the future. He's strong, he's fast and his technique is breathtaking but he's not a natural scorer. The only natural scorer we've got is Chicarito whose more of an impact player.
SAF's teams were always known of being filled with player capable to score goals. The double side had Kanchelskis, Giggs, Hughes, Cantona and Keane capable of scoring goals. The treble side had Becks, Scholes, Giggs, Keane, Cole and Yorke while the last CL winner side had the likes of Ronaldo, Tevez, Scholes, Giggs and Rooney. Last season we kind of missed that. We had Rooney scoring 27 league goals followed by Hernandez who scored 10 league goals and Welbeck with 9.
Another characteristic that SAF's teams are renowned for is the amount of competition forwards had to face to keep their first team place. Cole-Yorke had the likes of Ole and Sheringham breathing at their neck. Rooney-Tevez had Saha and Ronaldo (not to forget that SAF went on to spend 30m on Berba). It seems that SAF like to have his forward on their toes. In fact there were times when the pressure for first team strikers got so high that players preferred leaving/retired prematurely (Cantona and Cole) rather then risk ending on the bench.
I think that the gaffer wants to restore that at United. Kagawa can bag them from midfield while RVP is a great scorer himself. Powell is young but he's also a regular scorer. By signing RVP SAF is also passing a statement that no one, not even Wayne Rooney, can expect a guaranteed first team place next season. I think that for such statement alone its worth spending 15m for the player.
