Robin van Persie

Well that's a bit worrying. I'd like us to be in a stronger position than Arsenal.

It comes down to whether we think Cleverley and Anderson have the talent to make the step up. I think they do, so I'm comfortable with Ferguson's apparent plan. Yes, they have chequered injury histories; so do many players. We could sign someone new, and there'd be an element of risk that they could get injured too.

Wilshere's been out for a year and not due back for another 3 or 4 months (I think?). Cleverley and Anderson have both been fit and playing football for most of the summer. So I don't see the similarity myself.

Not to mention the fact there's two of them. If just one can avoid serious injuries this season we'll be much better off than we were in 11/12.

I know we will.

The point is, you only need to look at our midfield options to see why SAF hasn't invested in midfield. he's thinking something along the lines of:

Carrick (Jones)
Cleverley (Scholes)
Anderson (Giggs)

Not to mention the likes of Kagawa and Powell being in the mix too.

Our midfield isn't as strong as it could be, but it irritates me that it gets spuriously blamed all the time.

It seems that people have no faith in the likes of Cleverley and Anderson, which I find strange. They're getting to the age now where they should be given the opportunity to stake a claim.

As an aside, I don't think our striking options are as strong as mooted.

Berbatov is basically out the door in all but body.
Hernandez is still developing his all-round game, and may be a couple of seasons away from seeing the fruits of his labour.
Welbeck is the same as Hernandez, but to a lesser degree.
Rooney is our established, most influential player. He is also prone to massive swings in form and lean spells of form.

You think? Maybe Fergie should look into signing a new striker? I'm going to peruse the transfer forum to see if there's any threads linking us with one...

Not sure why the condescending tone is required. Well, actually, I am - because it's you, and you just can't help yourself.

We're in the RvP thread, so this is as appropriate a place to share that view. Reading through the thread, there are a lot of posters saying that RvP would be overkill given the options we have. Was just offering an alternative viewpoint.

Anyway, I'm off to work. You'll have to find someone else to undermine. Stay classy Pogue.

Deal has stalled according to the BBC.

WTF happened overnight?

Fergie said that Arsenal wont play ball and Arsenal have been trying to negotiate with other teams.

We did sell them kidney head and I also thought relations were good between arsene and SAF.

If we are playing hardball over the transfer fee and get gazumped again then our negotiating team need to take a long hard lookout themselves. Hopefully RVP will help push it thru.

I guess Arsenal can have some fun by delaying this deal until deadline day if they really wanted to be dicks. Would mean Van Persie having a non existent preseason.

Can see Van Persie accepting a move to City close to the deadline, just so he leaves Arsenal. Although it seems we are his first choice, but also by far the last Arsenal's.

Its also possible that Fergie said what he did last night to try and force arsenals hand if we really are getting nowhere with them.

Maybe...but I really think Arsenal are playing hardballs here. I can see this playing out until deadline day, Berba style...

Indeed, I dont know why Arsenal are being such dicks anyway. I mean its not as if they are really rivals to us any more...Anyway I think you are right this could be a deadline day deal however on the other hand if there is an indication that Arsenal are not going to play nice or indeed play at all then I can see us walking away before then and pursuing other potential targets.

In terms of clubs who have debts, and must have a profitable business. Our closest rivals in that category is probably Arsenal.

In terms of on the pitch they are not rivals to us anymore.

Arsenal are playing the Sao Paolo waiting 'game'. If no one else go for the player then they'll sell it to us. If RVP decides to remain to Arsenal then well and good. If some big club comes in and throw millions towards them then they'll show us the middle finger. We seem happy to play the game too. If we get him, then we'll parade him as proof of how ambitious the Glazers are. If not, well, we tried our best didn't we?

I'd say lets go for someone else. Cavani is being offered at 35m euros and he's younger and less injury prone then Robin Van Saha.

Well..you never know, lets look on a bright side. We might not get him...he goes off to city then spends the majority of the season in the treatment room. We will all be breathing out a huge sigh of relief!!

 calm down, dear. It was a joke. The thread was miles off-topic then you made a post that was actually relevant starting with the words "as an aside". Hence my comment.

I think first priority is to sell abroad, not to a team in direct competition with us - for the fans sake and the fact we'll be strengthening our immediate opponents. Though it seems Juventus (the only reported interested party) are low-balling us, so maybe Wenger's trying to milk more money out of them...?

Otherwise if that falls through it's to whoever offers the most cashmoney (see Nasri). It's logical really.

Bloody hell whats going on, we're MUFC but we'd probably stuggle to sign Kevin Doyle at the moment!! Kags is great but after all this Lucas and RVP big money talk we are going to be a laughing stock if we don't bring anyone in.

What with Fergie all of a sudden talking transfer targets with the press? This isn't his usual style.

Robins like a bird, he just wants to fly away

See what I did there?

Does it actually matter?

United are playing within their means... Which is fair enough as PSG, City and co. will blow everyone out of the water if they want to.

He often does most summers when a transfer is near completion be it we get him or they move elsewhere.

I think it is when the speculation becomes too much to deny that he discusses them
