Robin van Persie

You'd be better off taking betfair's 5/1 on a top 2 finish than 5/2 on a match bet with Man Utd.

Scholes and Giggs are not going to go on forever.Scholes was good because he only played half a season.

Carrick, Rio, Evra are fading and Ashley Young is over rated.

We have strengthened and can look forward to a better injury record than last season which was horrendous. Also, with Wilshere coming back and the Ox a year older, I think we're looking good.

It's bleeding obvious you mancs are not going to agree with me.

Scholes was good because he was Scholes, a rather good footballer.

Carrick is fading?

Whether or not Young is overrated or not surely hasn't got any bearing on whether United are stronger or weaker than last season, considering he was at OT last season too.

United's injury record was at least as bad as Arsenal's last season. Arsenal can look forward to a better season injury-wise, but United can't?

Vidic coming back should mean as much, if not more than Wilshere coming back, and we have quite a few young players that will be a year older, like Ox for you lot.

Do you think United fans will disagree with you because there are more holes in your argument than in an average football net?

Yeah I am still not excited about this one. Kagawa looks like a very exciting player and Welbeck just keeps getting better and better, yet they'd both probably have to sit on the bench in most of the important matches if we were to buy van Persie, as I can't see us benching him as a new star, nor Rooney.

Exactly. Fergie's proved he's looking at the bigger picture last season when he went for Welbeck - Rooney/ Hernandez - Rooney. Welbeck is now at the stage where he needs to play week in week out and it looks as he's gonna be absolute superstar for us.

And there is Kagawa as you've mentioned obviously...

and Hernandez, Berba(?).

Van Persie's become world-class last season but the question is, is it worth harming Welbeck.

You'd be better off taking betfair's 5/1 on a top 2 finish than 5/2 on a match bet with Man Utd.

Absolutely right. In other words why would I take an even money bet on Arsenal finishing above Utd (which I assume is the implication of Pogue's post), when I can get better odds from Betfair?

Why would a manc fan not also take better odds than Betfair i.e. the 5/2 I suggested for this bet?

Anyway, let's see where Golden goes on this. He hasn't responded yet.

Carrick, fading? After having his best season in ages with the club

Correct me if I'm wrong here: RVP's flown back to England, and that's enough to suggest that, according to 'sky sources', he's coming to United?

He hasn't flown anywhere. MEN suggested he COULD be doing that and COULD sign tonight, slapped an "exclusive" label on the story, and now it's become a fact.

Stories feed stories feed stories. Until it's proven, take with pinch of salt.

That's the point, though. When you sign a player of his age everything happens very quickly and the pressure on the player is huge. He has a certain amount of time to make it click otherwise the money is down the drain whereas with a young player you have time to fit him in, mould him and setbacks don't hurt so much. Lucas gets injured for 6 months, it's not a big deal. VP gets injured for 6 months that's a huge chunk out of the time he has to offer to us of his best.

Yes i understand your point, but you are looking more at the negative aspects because you are not that enthusiastic about the transfer. Whereas on the flip side i am equally guilty of looking more at the positives because i can see what a huge benefit the player of last season would be to us in the big games and in Europe.

One thing i would say is different here than at Arsenal. We have a lot more players of quality than they do. Should RVP get injured we wouldn't really have to bring him back before he was ready, as i felt they may have done more at Arsenal.

He was overplayed at times due to a lack of anyone else who could regularly be relied upon. With Rooney, Welbeck, Hernandez, Nani etc we wouldn't need to do that. We could in fact save him somewhat for the games we really needed him for.

I know. I see the benefit. I'm just very wary of the risk involved in signing players of that age for big money and big wages. If you want quick results why not spend that sort of money on a player closer to his prime like Aguero where you get best of both worlds?[/QUOTE]

Yes we could have gone down that route, but then we would have had to compete with City, who would always win regarding fees and wages. But i can't say you are flawed in that logic.

But in the here and now, sign RVP or not RVP is the choice, and my vote is an emphatic sign him.

RVP Could sign for United tonight

COULD the big summer transfer story be about to reach a conclusion? If you believe the Manchester Evening News then the answer is a definite 'yes' as the paper claims that Robin van Persie could leave Arsenal's pre-season training camp in Germany and fly back to England to sign for Manchester United this evening.

The paper says that United and Arsenal will settle on a fee of around £20m for the striker, more than what United had previously offered but less than the £25m Arsenal had hoped for.

The MEN offers little in the way of evidence for its bold prediction but does say that the signing will be a statement of intent by Alex Ferguson, and will show that the debts forced onto the club by the Glazer family have not diminished his ability to attract big players.

However, there could be another reason why United have suddenly found the cash to buy Van Persie. Apparently the £30m they had set aside to buy Brazilian wonderkid Lucas Moura will go unused as the teenager is set to join Paris St Germain, according to The Sun.

Talking from the Brazilian Olympic football team's base in London the 19-year-old Sao Paolo player trotted out the kind of platitudes that suggest he is indeed about to join moneybags PSG. "I know they are building a wonderful project at this club, with a fantastic structure and major players," he said.

However, there is still the chance something could derail the deal as Moura made it clear that the move would not take place until January.

Arsenal have made it a hat-trick of summer transfer deals with the capture of Spanish international Santi Cazorla on a long-term contract to go with their signings of Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski. Though Arsenal wouldn't reveal the exact fee they paid Malaga in announcing the signing on their official website, it's believed they forked out £17m for Cazorla's services.

The 27-year-old attacking midfielder, who has played 45 times for his country and was a member of the Spanish squad that won the recent European Championships, told the Arsenal website: "I'm so excited to be joining one of the greatest teams in Europe and also in the Premier League. I will do my best to help Arsenal challenge for trophies and make all the supporters happy."

He also revealed that former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has done his bit in facilitating the move. "He said this was a big club and that I was going to be very happy here, he said I would adapt easily," explained Cazorla of the player who spent eight years at the Emirates before signing for Barcelona last summer.

Meanwhile the Daily Mail says that Arsenal are in the mix for the man they call the "Korean Gerrard". Whether that means Ki Sung-yeung mumbles his way through interviews using words of no more than two syllables or knows how to pull the strings in midfield like Liverpool's Steven isn't clear.

Either way, the South Korea midfielder has apparently been checked out by Arsenal scouts while playing for his country in the Olympics and the Mail says the Gunners aren't put off by the 23-year-old's £9m price tag. Currently with Celtic, Sung-yeung – who scored the crucial penalty for South Korea in their quarter-final defeat of Team GB on Saturday – is also wanted by QPR. But it's believed Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will make the first move on the recommendation of chief scout Steve Rowley.

The Metro claims that Chelsea have been offered Alvaro Pereira at a knockdown price of £15m. Apparently Portuguese champions Porto are a bit strapped for cash and, knowing the Blues are in search of a solid defender, made them an offer they might not be able to refuse.

The 26-year-old first came to the attention of Chelsea last year but the European champs weren't prepared to pay Porto's asking price of £30m. Nonetheless they've continued to covet the Uruguayan wing-back, and their devotion seems to have paid off.

Porto are desperate to hang on to striker Hulk and would use the money made from offloading Pereira to offer the Brazilian frontman a new deal. "We think everything will go well and that he can leave the club," said Pereira's agent Flavio Perchmen, adding: "I spoke with Alvaro last week and he is calm. We are just waiting."

The drawn-out saga surrounding the future of Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov could be approaching its denouement with Italian rag Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that the Bulgarian is on the brink of signing for Zenit St Petersburg.

The 31-year-old frontman has been more unsettled than a French cyclist in recent months and United boss Alex Ferguson has made no secret of the fact he believes it would be in Berbatov's best interests to move on.

Several top clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Galatasaray, have been linked with him but Gazzetta dello Sport claims Zenit are in advanced negotiations with Berbatov's representatives and an announcement is imminent. ·

good man Cesc :)

Oh I've taken it with a pound of salt. I just wondered if anything else (read: substantial) had happened.

Exactly it's just part of the bullshit. He's lining up v Cologne in Germany on Saturday night.

I swear to God, you must be a parody account. Nobody - and I mean nobody - could repeatedly come across as stupid as you do on here.

The reason you're taking a bet on here - as oppose to on Betfair - is because the bet isn't about trying to make money. It's a sporting wager. You claim team A will do better next season, someone else says team B will do better. In this scenario the odds should - obviously - be evens.

If all you're worried about is a return on your investment, by all means feck off to betfair and find someone interested in the odds you're offering. If that gives us a break from your posting on here it's a win win situation for everyone.

Robin Van Persie - so talented that he doesn't need a plane to fly to Old Trafford.

If everything clicks and you keep van Persie, Arsenal could be a challenger to United and City.

But as things stands, United has a better first XI and a better (and importantly, more settled) squad than Arsenal.

According to Betfair, the odds of Utd winning the league are 3.5

Arsenal are 13.

Converting them to percentages, that makes 28.6% and 7.7% respectively

Arsenal's chances based upon those probabilities compared to Utd is 2.7/1

I'll be generous. Give me odds of 5/2 and I'll stake £20 on it.

Are you on?

how about we simplify it

If United win the league you give me 20 quid
If Arsenal win the league i'll give you 20 quid

I won't give out statement before the transfer window ends, but i can sense that this season Arsenal will do really really well.

It would be better for you guys to get accustomed to cocky Arsenal fans.

That's even money, geebs, great from your perspective but shit from that of an Arsenal fan.

5/2 on Arsenal finishing above United is a fair bet. I'd definitely take it.

Contrary to reports, the Arsenal striker has not left the club's pre-season training camp in Germany to complete a move to Old Trafford - but Fergie is preparing a new bid

Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing a new bid to sign Robin van Persie.

Manchester United boss Ferguson has already had one bid turned down but his club are determined to beat off competition from Juventus and Manchester City.

But contrary to reports the Gunners striker, 29, has not left Arsenal's training camp in Germany.

He is still with the rest of the squad as they prepare for their ahead of their friendly in Cologne on Sunday.

United are expected to go back in this week but Arsenal have yet to receive a new offer with the board determined to hold out for £20m-plus.

Robin van Persie of Arsenal during a training session in Hennef, Germany

Juventus have not yet given up, City boss Roberto Mancini has said publicly he does not think van Persie will join them and that leaves United in pole position.

United had an offer just less than £15m turned down last month and Ferguson has reservations about paying over the odds for a striker with a bad injury record and one year left on his contract.

A deal is still someway off yet and Arsenal remain optimistic that their summer spending spree may convince van Persie to stay.

But United are also growing in confidence that they will get their man.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has spent more than £30m on Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud in this transfer window.

So he's not left training yet.

So he's not left training yet.

So from signing him tonight, to him not leaving Germany, to us confident in signing him, though he might stay now that Arsenal have splashed the cash. All in the space of 16 hours from the mirror

No fans do cocky better than Arsenal fans.

Even when years of failure.

We are accustomed to them.

It makes their annual capitulations all the more amusing.

We will probably wait, wait and wait until he end up with someone else. Then saf will step in and say the usual stuff.

Anyway wish people would calm down on RVP. So far everything is bollocks and just speculation.

He trained well in Germany this morning and is expected to take part in Sunday's friendly against Cologne.

United have been "pushing very hard" for RVP, but of late Robin has been in great spirits and buzzing in training. Hard one to call.

Whatever about signing for Utd he won't be "flying in tonight" to do it anyway.

Signing RVP would be quite a coup, but I would worry how Welbeck and Hernandez would be affected for playing time.
