Robin Van Persie - Were you happy we sold Jaap Stam?

Getting his wages off the books and for a reasonable fee, with a year left on his contract is not - by any definition - incredibly stupid. It's actually a decent bit of business. As you point out he was given enough chances and just didn't cut it. Refusing to sell surplus players to clubs we have a slim chance of drawing in a CL qualifier really would be incredibly stupid.

Both legs of the Champions League qualifiers take place before the end of the transfer window. There is no reason why we couldn't have just waited until the draw and then IF we'd drawn Fenerbache, sold him after the tie. Particularly considering we now desperately need a striker ourselves and are unlikely to have a replacement bedded in before then.

It is quite a dumb move. Unless he was causing unrest and even then, just leave him out of the tour.

It might be unlikely to be an issue but there is no real reason to have taken the chance at all. It was unlikely that Danny Welbeck would end up knocking us out of the FA cup last season but it happened. If you sell a player to a team you are potentially in direct competition with it's completely foolish to ignore the effect that might have and what you can do to avoid it.

Cup tieing him in the CL would make it almost impossible to shift him.

Why would we have to play him? It's more the issue of him playing against us...a player who knows our defenders and still has the quality on his day to tear them a new one. There was nothing about our performance levels last year to suggest we would just sweep Fenerbache aside regardless.

Also if we knock Fenerbache out they wouldn't really have to worry about him being cuptied...not to mention I suspect they wouldn't be the only team interested.

Find it weird he has move there. Turkey is like the European equivalent to the MLS, its a higher standard, but the big players that go there, is to ease into their retirement.

Van Persie, still has much to give in one of the top leagues. Thought Italy would have been a good place for him, though i guess his large wage packet is more important

They have a very low tax rate, which explains why so many have recently flocked there.

It doesnt make sense to keep hold of a player that you want to sell just on the off chance you happen to draw the club who wants him - probably there are not many clubs willing to pay his wages either, although I have never quite understood where the hell these Turkish clubs get all their money from for these mega wages.

Getting rid before getting a replacement is more of an issue - TBH I find his leaving all a bit strange as I thought him and LvG were close (captain of Holland and all that) but quite clearly LvG is a ruthless bastard and doesnt give a shit about old loyalties.

They can get away with lower wages, as they have low taxes.

that is part of it but there is more to it than that, the top clubs in Turkey manage to generate a huge amount of cash. Fener and Gala make more revenue than the likes of Athletico Madrid or Roma (who most fans would probably see as bigger clubs), I dont know whether this is down to TV money or ticket sales or what.

hahahhahahahhaha bonkers....

One of the best strikers I have seen at this club, even if we witnessed his top form for only a year. Shame that Fergie's departure affected him so badly, or we would have surely got another seen of him in top class form.

Good luck to him. I think he'll be a hit in Turkey and would do well for Fener in the champions league; still got a lot of football in him, just needs to be pampered and made to feel like he is the top man.

Very sad to see him go, not been this sad to see a player leave since Ronaldo to be honest. I would have kept him if it were up to me , he is a class player. We'll see by the end of the season if it was the right decision to let him go.

My miserable fecking Turkish boss was complaining about the Fenerbache fans being there to greet him saying it was pointless and they should have been at work. I hope Galatasaray do really shite this season. Fecking stinky breathed, high-pitched voiced, arse candle.

Behind the scenes of RVP's transfer to Fenerbahce:

sounds like at his last few days at united. when he was set to leave so he was separated from the main squad.

I'm sorry to see him go, a top professional and a top player. I've never been so excited with the club signing a player as I was with him.
