Robin Van Persie - Were you happy we sold Jaap Stam?

I love how as soon as he scores you can see him looking for him. That was a true cnuts trick but I still love him.

Brilliant brilliant striker. Should have stayed longer.

Everything Ibra is doing for us now, RVP could do too in different/varying capacities.

Speaking of rubbing it in :)

Love this. The fake 'I respect my old club so won't celebrate' act is so annoying.

He didn't celebrate the goal at Emirates earlier that season. Only after gooners continued the abuse, he went on to celebrate.

Besides there were a few here that berated Ashley Fletcher for celebrating against us in efl cup this season. It rubs the wrong way for a lot of fans.

No he couldn't.

He looked hopeless in his last season and looked the same for Holland even during their successful World Cup.

He would not be scoring 20 goals for us now.

He's still the last 'favourite player' we've had at the club, even if he only had one great season. The fact that he has that nasty side to him makes him even more lovable.

His time here was short, but man that season was insane. No matter what the situation was, always felt we would score with him in the side.

He looked hopeless playing next to a dogsh|te Rooney AND Falcao in a truly mess of a philosophised LVG team. Of course he should have done better but he's still a class player with superb technique. With the chances we create now and his intelligent link up play, he would be doing very well in the current set up.

I don't know why this reminded me of that awful game vs West Brom when RVP and Rooney spent the last 20 mins of the game in midfield trying to supply our striker, Fellaini. :wenger:

God, I tend to forget about that team we had. Remember Di Maria, Falcao, Rooney and RVP all shoehorned into the same attack, with the 'philosophical' midfield and defence being our back bone.
Looking back we didn't even tear one team apart with all that talent (on paper). It never even clicked once. It was so frustrating seeing it all flop considering how excited we all were in the summer. I must say I do like Falcao but Di Maria came across as a petulant bitch.

So you wouldn't have cared if Ronaldo, on his first trip back to OT for Madrid, celebrated wildly when scoring?

In years gone by a player like him could enjoy their twilight years in England because their technique and intelligence was top class. But the game was slower then.

Today's game is so much about pressing and athleticism that if you aren't up to speed you're easily noticed. Now RvP was never particularly quick but that's not to say he was a slouch either. He moved sharply and coupled with his technique and ability to make and find space he was elite.

Obviously with age and his injury record it's taken its toll on his legs. You never lose the technical ability so he would have produced moments but finding the consistency is not happening if your body isn't responding as quick as your brain. The pace of the PL was too much for him in the end.

No I wouldn't have. Football is a form of entertainment. I don't get too wound up about things like this. He plays for Real Madrid and he is genuinely happy to score and put them through. Any non-celebration is just an act, not a genuine reaction.

Also did you not find it hilarious when Adebayor celebrated infront of the Arsenal fans? Or when Van Nistelrooy celebrated infront of that defender(when he scored that penalty for Netherlands)? Or Evra celebrating inches away from Suarez and then biting that fake arm? It adds to the entertainment, is harmless, and adds some spice to the game.

You can't really compare Ronaldo and Adebayor, the respective fans' opinions of them both differ wildly, and that's what encouraged their differing celebrations.

I genuinely think Ronaldo not celebrating would be out of genuine respect to the fans who formerly supported him; and I think that's likewise for most who choose to do so. Of course they're still happy to score on the inside, but it's a little gesture which I think is a nice form of respect to the fans. No more than that.

Tbh Arsenal fans hated RVP when he joined us. They sang negatively about him and the general attitude towards him was very sour. I am convinced that RVP was well aware of this as he has been in England for ages and know's alot about the English game in general.
Ronaldo didn't leave on bad terms with United or United fans. And when Ronaldo did come against us in 2013, it was 5 years after leaving so any malice would've probably dissolved. Not that he even had any reason to hate us anyway because as I said, he left on good terms. The fans still sing his name to this day.

RVP wouldn't celebrate in a antagonising manner for scoring against us, I'm sure. It all depends on the circumstances regarding a players exit.

I miss him.

I'm still really gutted about how his career went post Ferguson, it genuinely makes me upset. Even more so after seeing his goal against West Ham in the underrated goals thread.

The guy was something special, his 2012/13 season was an amazing individual season. He should have gone on and had a few more world class seasons for us and cemented a place in united folklore. But the calamity that was Moyes had to happen (although I believe i've read RvP had a good goal return given the minutes he played this season), then LvG shafted RvP into a crap system :(

I will always love him for 2012/13.

I much prefer RvP's arrogance to Zlatan's. It reminds me of RvN.

I think the reason he celebrated in front of the player (according to Twitter atleast) was because that guy said Rvp is finished and should be playing where the veterans go to play.

In hindsight I'd have rather kept RVP than Rooney if i had to choose between old, past-it strikers for leadership and experience. It's a shame we did not buy him 2-3 years earlier, injuries early on in his career meant that he lost his legs fairly quickly and with our period of post-Fergie flux he looked even worse and declined faster than he would have otherwise. out of the 3 of Rooney, Falcao and RVP I liked him the most. It's interesting to see if he would have joined us if he knew Fergie was leaving in a year because I do feel that had an effect on him post-Moyes.

He did score against us. He didn't celebrate and the OT crowd were singing his name.

RVP didn't celebrate when he first scored against Arsenal in a United shirt, but that respect ony went one way and he was subject to a tonne of abuse from the Arsenal fans. He wasn't making the same "respect" mistake twice :D

Brilliant brilliant striker. Should have stayed longer.

Everything Ibra is doing for us now, RVP could do too in different/varying capacities.

By "different/varying" do you mean "worse"?

Ibra just needs one more league goal to match Van Persie's total from the whole of last season in the Turkish League and he's already scored twice as many goals in all competitions than Van Persie managed in his final season at United.

RVP was great for us for one season. After that, I would say he was pretty shite.

The thing I feel strongest about from post Fergie is how we chose Rooney over RVP and the consensus (after he left) that he's past it. Such BS.

he played in an awful side that year, literally NOBODY was good. We made ADM look worse than Barton, Ashley Young was the star man in a £250million squad.

RVP would be a fantastic backup striker in this current United. I watch Turkish football regularly and his movement, intelligence and finishing are still the same. He never pressed under SAF so why would he now? He's about as mobile as the current Zlatan...

I'd agree except for the injuries. He missed too much football in his last two seasons.

On topic what was the reality behind the story that RVP and Rooney didn't like to pass to one another? I saw stats of 1 game were they barely passed to each other. But it's only 1 game.

Playing style alone, RVP would not be dropping as deep as Ibra, so you would 'lose' Ibra's silky footwork in the build play and middle of the park but RVP's latter years were all about his work in the penalty box and arguably that is what we need more of right now (not to mention the benefit of having a central leading figure up top for the rest of the team to work around/with).

When we created chances for RVP he would finish them; it's as simple as that. Under Fergie we created loads (probably over relied on him tbh, though with the current squad, I don't think that would be the case) and under LVG we created jack. Now under Mourinho we are creating loads again.

So whilst all this is hypothetical and if we take what VivaObertan is true, he would be banging them in for us right now.

The one thing I would concerned about is his fitness/mobility compared to Ibra, who I think is doing freak physical work/distance covered/pressing etc for us right now. However, like I said, all RVP needs to do is do some simple hold up play, be around and mostly in the penalty box for us to see results.

It seems van Persie is underrated when people talk of top strikers in the Prem. I mean he rarerly if ever gets a mention but even with his injury record, he was still a magnificent player.

According to Dutch media Feyenoord and RVP have come to an agreement. If Fener cooperates he might be playing for us this year.

I'm quit sure he's still be able to tear it up in the Dutch league. Exciting stuff :P

I think he already has his place in United folklore to be honest based on 2012/2013 alone. What a season.
