Robin Van Persie - Were you happy we sold Jaap Stam?

yeah even i can admit he made mistakes and I wanted him gone since february or so. However, I dont feel like every single thing should be just branded as "LvG's mistake" instead of looking at it objectively
There is lots of rewriting history which doesnt make sense. For instance in the beginning of 14-15 most of the posters here were happy with the falcao and di maria transfer, yet today lots will write "i dont know what LvG was thinking going for a player who was coming from injury". Lots critiscized RvP that season end ( there were threads like this https://www.redcafe.net/threads/both-van-persie-and-falcao-need-to-go-this-summer.401154) yet now you have lots of "cant believe we sold him over rooney".

He wasn't even 'bad' under LVG. He had to play in a ridiculous system with two similar players on top of him in a team that doesn't create chances.

One game I remember he even played as a CM to accommodate FALCAO and Rooney (lol) and still managed to show his class. You very clearly just don't like him.

By all accounts he's done more playing in the Super Lig / Europe over the past 2 years than Rooney has at United in the same period.

I got a bit teary after the crowd chanted his name after he scored, really deserved it and it was a great send off by the crowd. he brought us the title and we've treated him like crap after Sir Alex left. He may not have his strength and speed, but his ball control and kicks technique is still there and can still make good runs - Rooney looked like the older player out of the two.

Bring him back as a backup.

Still showed more yesterday than Rooney has in like, a year.

i dont remember him dropping to CM to accomodate rooney upfront. I remember the opposite. However, he did iirc play deeper when fellaini went upfront against WBA. RvP was just as undroppable as Rooney was (at least Rooney was flexible enough to play in multiple positions tbf. RvP was quite ordinary most of the season bar a few games. You can argue that he didnt fit the system but the argument could also be that the system was to adapt him, Di Maria rooney and falcao/mata in the same team (Rooney was forced to play in midfield because of this)

I liked him and I still do. I was happy with him scoring last night and even now he would probably be my favourite signing in the last 10 years. But you are kidding yourself if you think if he showed class in his last season. Our (or rather LvG's) mistake was not signing another striker to replace RvP. Not selling RvP.

RvP performing decently in a league where Hugo Rodallega and Mario Gomez are the top scorers doesnt really say anything either.

No thanks, rather give that game time to Rashford and Martial at center forward. We should be moving on from ageing slow strikers and look up to attackers with pace sooner than later.

Prob said loads of times already. Delighted for him with his reception at the start, and also when he scored. Classy out.

What a weird comment. Never mind a year, he didn't show more yesterday than Rooney did yesterday.

Van Persie's a weird one for me. He wasn't at the club long enough for me to really think of him as a United player, having spent so long with Arsenal. And in terms of performance we had one amazing season from him and two fairly poor ones. So I didn't think I would give much of a toss watching him playing at OT again but the standing ovation surprisingly felt kind of emotional. Possibly to do with his status as Fergie's last big signing and seeing the great man himself look all proud and happy. Whatever, the whole thing was lovely. The perfect end to a really enjoyable game.

I loved him. Must admit he was my favourite non United prior to his move to OT. It's a shame we didn't buy him a few years earlier.

And I was happy that he scored.

Thought of him as a massive cnut before his move. :) Loved him when he was with us.

He was the club's best striking purchase since Rudd; and one of our more technically proficient players in the Fergie's last few years. He was sublime that season. A pure joy to watch. His touch, hold up play, link up play, passing, goal scoring, desire, passion - everything was superb. Shame that Fergie decided to call it a day, or we would have won tons with this guy leading the line for us. He was just not the same after Fergie. Took his retirement to heart. Our hiring of the two clowns in the two seasons that followed didn't help either.

Such a phenomenal player. His first season was epic.

I loved his celebrations, always passionate and a bit cocky. When he scored, he was always running like a madmen, fisting, going to the crowd, just happy to score. He celebrated every goal like he scored in the final. Good times.

Glad he got the reception he did, he brought some of the best moments I have ever had as a United fan in that season we won the title :D

He has been poor for Fenerbahce so no chance. Plus if people can complain about Zlatan then RVP would be destroyed on here.

RVP is twice the finisher Zlatan ever was imo. Also, RVP can bring others into play with great hold up unlike Zlatan.

So many to mention for one season. He was just amazing that season. Delighted he got the reception he did and that it brings some closure to his time here for him and the fans. Id prefer to forget about his 2nd and 3rd seasons and just remember his debut season and last night as time goes on.

Fully expect him to score again against us in the away game though to be fair.

I rather we remember him as the great player he was for us. After all, he did feck all of note yesterday before the goal. Completely outmuscled by Smalling and Bailly.

Overstaying your welcome is what slowly diminishes Rooney's legacy at United. And despite me not being the biggest fan of Rooney anymore I would still like to remember his time with us fondly. But it gets harder each season.

Can't believe anyone is saying he should still be here. Would be dead wood, something that's been a major problem in our short term downfall. Would probably be doing similar to Zlatan goal wise, but wouldn't offer the influence and fire that he does imo. RvP was a bit of a bitch, rather than inspirational.

Edit: Loved the reaction to the goal though. Well deserved.

As a striker he definitely showed more yesterday. He scored and had one more great effort. Rooney never looked like scoring and the one chance he had to go through on the goal he had to cut back inside because he didn't have the pace to stay ahead of a defender he was a couple of yards ahead of.

He had a better scoring rate in his second year than he had in his first year too so I think calling it poor is a little off the mark. Not as spectacular but not poor. All that doesn't mean he should still be here but there was and is a case to be made that he's more useful than Rooney when fit. The problem is how often that is.

I think it's more so that he would be scoring and doing more than Rooney has done since his departure.

Probably, but I think we should be aiming a bit higher than someone who has been doing worse than nothing (aside from last night).

Van Persie would never settle with being a bench player, end of!

Oh Yeah? What exactly is factually incorrect about what I said then? Wasn't he 2nd in terms of goals only behind Wazza that year? Or wasn't he benched for Falcao in that Arsenal game where nothing was at stake anymore at the end of the seaon? Was it the Falcao being a parody on a striker part. Or was I perhaps lying about being from the same country? The only thing I think I made up was '1973', no idea what actual year it was.

You're kind of spot on about his motives to leave though.

My mistake sorry. It wasn't wrong more like interpretation isn't right.

Rvp wasn't in form at the time either. Falcao barely had got game time and I reckon we gave him one game simply because it shouldn't be said that he wasn't given a send off.

I didn't mean to come of harshly. Sorry if i offended. Cheers

It's all conjecture but I think Van Persie would have helped us if he was still here. He's a world class player and would definitely score 15 goals a season. We'd be doing better in the league and Europe with him and Martial up front.

He scored and obviously still has quality by nearly curving that shot past De Gea. I can't remember the last time I saw Rooney do something like that. Van Persie can still rely on his shooting, passing and technique cause he is an actual good footballer. Rooney relied on his explosiveness a lot, and when he lost that, he became useless. He was never a good "technical" footballer like Van Persie and Zlatan. He used to have a cracking shot on him, but even that has gone.

We sold the wrong one. If RVP was the English darling and Rooney was the Dutch guy, it would have been the other way around. But the club continue to get all romantic about Rooney and him breaking Sir Bobby's record. At least Mourinho dropped him I suppose.

Fair enough, I can see your point there. But to be fair, he IS playing with Fenerbahce. He could easily score 10+ goals in the Premier League in my opinion.

After Zlatan leaves next season, we will need an "experienced" 'number 9' type striker who can hold the line. Martial and Rashford are good but we need another option. RVP would be perfect as he knows the club. Plus, I'd love him to retire here. Mourinho brought back Drogba didn't he?

There was a sweet moment yesterday when he cut in and unleashed his trademark inside foot shot. DDG was beaten the moment the ball left his foot.

No problem. I replied on my phone, very early in the morning (at least for me) while sitting in a train stuck between two sweaty people

Some reports saying he might be rendered completely blind in his left eye. Hope those reports are not true and that he will recover 100%.

Stay strong RvP!

Yeah, I've just read the same thing. Looks like he could have been blinded in that eye.

Feck me I just saw this elsewhere:eek: Hope he makes a full recovery. Though I'm worried about the stuff I've read saying he might lose the sight in that eye.....:(

I'm guessing that's his career finished if the reports are true.
