Robin Van Persie - Were you happy we sold Jaap Stam?

Happy for him it's much deserved.

Happy days for all parties concerned.

I can't remember an opposing player getting that sort of reception since Beckham on loan at Milan.

Great moment for him and the fans, especially as he didn't get chance to have a proper send off. Obviously would have been very different if it was the goal to make it 0-1.

Seconded. Although I would have liked that clean sheet it was nice to have a proper opportunity for the United fans to show their appreciation. The cheers before kick-off was nice, but they're a dime a dozen. Only the special players get a reception like that when scoring against their former clubs.

Love the guy. Doesn't have the tenure of the other great players we've had, but that season was incredible.

Well done to the crowd for that reaction throughout the match. It was fantastic to hear and see. Nearly brought a tear to my eye.

Robin definitely deserved a proper send off.

If only we had more seasons of RVP's best :(

Will never forget that season. He was incredible.

The way I remember it, we had a home match against Arsenal at the end of the 2014/2015 season, where there was nothing at stake anymore for us because we'd already qualified for the Champions League. Robin was our second top scorer in the league that season (behind Rooney). So what did Van Gaal do?

Of course he let Falcao, who had scored only 4 goals and was a parody on a striker, start and benched RVP. He gave him 20 or 30 minutes. Even if he wasn't fit, how in fecks name can you start Falcao who had done nothing for us and was on loan on top of that? I still don't understand, maybe RVP wasn't fit enough, but still he could've let him start against his old club and taken him off after 60 minutes.

Treating a player who had done so much for him (he was the top scorer for Holland both during the qualifiers and at the World Cup in Brazil) like that, why? Most likely to make a point to the press and dressing room about how 'unbiased' he was, or because he felt Falcao 'had performed better in training that week'.

This says everything about what kind of person Van Gaal is. After that I lost all respect for him, permanently and forever, and I'm from the same country as that cnunt so it says a lot.

It got even worse though, last season. Van Persie wasn't required anymore, Chicharito wasn't considered good enough, a year before Welbz was offloaded to bring Falcao. Van Gaal genuinely seemed to think he didn't need them anymore. And then we finished last season with the lowest fecking amount of goals scored since 1976.

Fenerbahce was an ugly choice by RVP in my opinion though. But from his perspective I can see why he went there. In the end it's nice that he got a nice farewell.

Should have never left. United would have been playing in the Champions League if he was playing alongside Martial. A big big LvG blunder. Deserved all the applause. An amazing classy player with a terrific left foot.

Agreed. We should of punted Rooney and kept RvP. Surround him with pace and play him ala Bergkamp.

Never been so happy to concede a goal. I love the guy. My first OT visit was the title winning game against Villa and he scored a hattrick. I'll never forget. Wish him all the best.

I've said this on numerous occasions over the past 4 years but the guy's my favourite United player ever.

Still disappointed in LvG for sticking with Rooney over him, the guy is absolute class and could still be a valuable (albeit squad) player for us right now.

Glad he got worthy goodbye on Old Trafford and that's one of few goalsl I will ever be happy to concede. Absolute legend!

It was the perfect situation. 4 nil up, and he scores a consolation goal that doesnt really matter, so that he gets the perfect send off.

Great to see him getting this message from the crowd, class from the crowd, and the man.

Not many players if any at all who spent such a short time at a hugely successful club (after all that 2012/13 title was not our only one) manage to achieve such a status. This shows what a quality player he was, how important that year's title was for many reasons and how much he contributed to it.
Top top player, absolutely love him!

His stay here only seemed like 1 year, but he has legendary status in my eyes.

I know it'd be ridiculous to consider him a legend what with been here only 3 years, but his first season was legendary. Awesome, awesome send off.

Never been so glad for United to concede a goal. The reception Old Trafford gave him shows you the sort of club we are. I'm almost sure Fergie was smiling and beaming proudly at that fact, as well as being chuffed for Robin.

One of the reasons I wasn't unhappy when Van Gaal got sacked. He got rid of so many of my favourite players at the club then when he himself failed, I couldn't muster enough sympathy for him to want him to stay. Rafael, Welbeck, Van Persie, Chicharito....he fecked them all off and then failed to get us into the CL or even anywhere near a title challenge in his second season.

Lovely to see him back at Old Trafford!

Unlike most though, when he scored, I was more disappointed with us conceding than happy for Robin. Though Looking back, taking in the whole moment, it was nice and I was happy for him. I do miss him.

What a player. Only two jerseys I own are Nemanja Vidic's and Robin Van Persie's. Both of course Manchester United jerseys. What a player! Had Ferguson stayed, maybe he would be more of United's legend than Arsenal's. We will never know. He came, he score crapton of goals (some were gorgeous) and we won the title. Let's see if Ibrahimovic can repeat what Van Persie has done.

He still seems to have a problem with his nose. Forever blowing snot out and did it again after the near miss shot.

Couldn't watch the game and could only follow on my phone. I stopped following when the score was 4-0. I later looked and saw it was 4-1. At first I was upset that we conceded, then I saw RVP had been the one who scored, and I thought, "Good for him." Glad it played out this way.

Glad he got his goal. I wish he had a longer stay at United, but that season was just magical.

Classy reaction from the OT crowd.

I had the impression that he was "allowed" to score that goal by our players... just as a proper send off... we could get him back you know. :(

Most of what you said is factually incorrect. RvP was horrible that season and to say that we didn't give him a chance is just wrong. We persisted with him and to accommodate him upfront we played Rooney in midfield. It's not a coincidence that we played our best football that season with Rooney upfront.

However there was complaint that falcao was not given the chances and with the season already over for us, we gave him one last chance. I don't think anyone can blame him for that. Plus RvP was horrible the previous game missing a penalty against WBA. He was also off form.

Overall it's pretty easy to see why we sold RvP. My memory is that based on previous season performance, we told him that he would be a bench player as we are going to play a lone striker formation and Rooney performed better than him the previous season (and Moyes season). RvP decided that since it's the euro year and all that, it's better if he played week in week out so he left the club. Perfectly understandable from everyone's pov. Most of what you said seems to be wrong and said based on hindsight

Are you LvG's son? God I still like him but can admit he made so many mistakes, but you can't have any criticism regarding LvG it seems.

yeah even i can admit he made mistakes and I wanted him gone since february or so. However, I dont feel like every single thing should be just branded as "LvG's mistake" instead of looking at it objectively
There is lots of rewriting history which doesnt make sense. For instance in the beginning of 14-15 most of the posters here were happy with the falcao and di maria transfer, yet today lots will write "i dont know what LvG was thinking going for a player who was coming from injury". Lots critiscized RvP that season end ( there were threads like this https://www.redcafe.net/threads/both-van-persie-and-falcao-need-to-go-this-summer.401154) yet now you have lots of "cant believe we sold him over rooney".

Above everything else, RvP needed this. Really delighted for the guy. I wish he had a chance to come here a couple of years earlier. An absolute delight to watch.

Glad he got the goal but you could see throughout the game how shot his body is. He used to bully defenders but he looked like 9-year old playing against Smalling and Bailly. The goal shows he still got the intelligence, though.

Loved the crowd's reaction to him taking corners and when he scored the goal. I remember the crowd wanting to do the same when Becks nearly scored that half-volley against us.

Oh Yeah? What exactly is factually incorrect about what I said then? Wasn't he 2nd in terms of goals only behind Wazza that year? Or wasn't he benched for Falcao in that Arsenal game where nothing was at stake anymore at the end of the seaon? Was it the Falcao being a parody on a striker part. Or was I perhaps lying about being from the same country? The only thing I think I made up was '1973', no idea what actual year it was.

You're kind of spot on about his motives to leave though.
