Stupid people.

RVP is undoubtedly one of the best strikers in the World, for me the only players you would "laugh" at the suggestion of him being better than are the 2 freaks.

Comparing RvP to Rooney and guessing who's the better overall player is far from laughable, they're both world class and ones of the best players in the game, however I'd still pick Rooney over RvP if I had the choice, although I'm obviously glad we have both :P

That's true to be honest. Seems like a lot of people have suddenly swayed from that opinion.

Anyway, I'd still say that Van Persie is probably the better player than Rooney. When both are at their very best, Rooney is arguably better, but Van Persie seems to consistently play well more often than Rooney to be honest.

On the previous seasons argument, I think RVP has been a top player for a number of years. It's only really been in the last couple of seasons he's stayed injury free and produce his very best regularly.

I for one have definitely changed my opinion about who's the better striker. I shamelessly admit as much, at least.

Rooney being injured, fat, and quite shit vs Everton has obviously had some impact on my opinion. Also, the fact that van Persie was an actual signing bears some weight.

They're both class, I don't want to try figure out who is better. It's as pointless as a Nani vs Valencia debate really. Two great players who play in the same position but do it in very different ways, sort of.

Gets me every time.

It is a pointless argument though, down to preference really, had Rooney scored a hat-trick vs. Southampton yesterday we wouldn't be having the debate.

The amount of people who were saying what a shit tune 7 Nation Army was to sing at the football during the Euros...

Pscchh.

A lot of club's are using it aren't they? Pretty sure I've heard it at other games as well since the season started.

He has a history of getting injured when he joins up with the Dutch camp.....

If it wasnt for them last season he probably wouldnt have lasted the entire season like he did. He apparently asked wenger to let the dutch physios deal with him if he had any issues whatsoever over his fitness instead of the arsenal docs.

It's not original, or clever, but it's a good bouncy anthem. Everyone knows it, and it gets the crowd jumping. I even brought up how surprisingly fun it was in one of the Diaries.

It's hard enough to get good chants started, so it's no surprise this one's taken off. Everyone was virtually forced to do it in the summer, and it's stuck.

Still hoping for Sos Cagon to catch on somewhere here eventually. It's reached Italy & the Balkans.

Didn't I hear somewhere that Van Gaal has told Van Persie that Huntelaar is now Holland's first choice striker?

The youtube video of the River Plate fans signing Sos Cagon as they wait outside the stadium is class.

I feel the same - Rooney should have come back in better shape

I'd always been a fan and to see his technical skills he reminds me of Van Basten

listening to Van Persie talk you can see how focused that he is on being a winner and striving for perfection in his game

the way he showed his appreciation of Paul Sscholes was great

I really think (and hope) he will bring out the best in a fit and determined Rooney

real class act and I wish we'd signed him when Tevez fecked off to City

Yup LVG's first choice is indeed Huntelaar so like the last game, hopefully RvP sits on the bench again.

RVP is one player who I definitely wouldn't mind seeing being marginalized by his national side. Generally, I don't like jumping on to the "let his international career die" bandwagon but given RVP's injury issues in the past it definitely makes sense.

Was great to see him go over to the fans at the end, even if he could really do no less. Seems to be on a major PR offensive to match his brilliant start on the pitch, the man can do no wrong.

Van Persie is currently a better player than Rooney, but that is no slight on Rooney as van Persie has arguably been the best striker in the world for the last 12 months. They have very different games so it maybe isn't fair to directly compare them, but if van Persie keeps fit and keeps up his form then I think Rooney will have to get used to not being the star man anymore. Which is a good thing - Rooney in recent seasons has been virtually undroppable even when he's out of form and it is good we have someone else capable of taking on the mantle of the talismanic game winner when Rooney isn't at his best.

It doesn't really matter who is a better player or who was better the last few seasons. Goal scoring is very instinctive skill and many players have hot periods during their careers. RVP is in the zone right now and we get to benefit. If he continues at his nearly one goal a game pace it bodes very well for our trophy chances.

Shades of Ruud Van Nistlerooy, barring the penalty miss.

For some reason I think Ruud also missed his first penalty he took for United, was it CL or something or I've been smoking too much weed recently?

Ruud van Nistelrooy's first goal was against Fulham, and his first hatrick was against Southampton. Spooky.

Nice stat Summit, see its obvious. RvP obviously missed the penalty on purpose as an omen so the footballing gods would shower him with good fortune.

fecking forward thinking that, what a guy

It had already been reflected in his reaction to the penalty miss. He was like a man possessed to make up for it, but not resorting to pointless/wasteful play or losing his mind in the process.

That's a quality which I really rate and the one flaw I always found with CR7: once he fecked up or got frustrated over something you may as well sub him off. Rooney also tends to lose it a bit when things aren't going his way.

the way he showed his appreciation of Paul Sscholes was great

Yups, I was very happy to hear that. The last few games at times I felt he may be wondering whether moving at all was the right choice as our play wasn't good enough to service him properly... the Scholes comes on and does his usual effortless midfield masterclass.

He was clearly all giddy about playing with Scholes on his side, which is great to see.

This is the most sensible and grown up post in this thread.

Let's just be thankful that we have two of the best strikers in the world.

This is great too, lucky git captures the goal

Someone needs to check this video for Fernando Torres, because I am almost certain Gary Neville is moaning in the background at one point!
