 wanna bet? Your mate Gillespie still owes me money making the same bet a few years ago. :smirk:
You didn't take it you bottle job. Mind you, you did make a few quid on Barca shitting on Man Utd.

We've been shite, but we will easily finish above Arsenal this season. Giroud is the french Carroll.

I did take it, feel free to ask Gillespie to confirm the story, or I can go dig up the PMs when I have time.

Well then you'd have been paid out, as you were when you backed Barca to beat Man Utd.

We've missed a player like him since Ronaldo left. A clear and reliable source of goals. Rooney's inconsistencies in front of goal is less of a worry and with less pressure on Rooney to get the goals, this might be the best thing for him as well. Can't wait to see the two of them tear the league apart.

He played for Arsenal mate. This time last year, we were laughing at him after the penalty miss during the 8-2 game. I can understand certain people finding it hard to relate to him, but feck me... he's so good!

Lol 'had his penalty saved'. I hate when people say Penalty 'miss' when it is a save from the keeper. a genuine Charlie Adam Spacegoat is fair enough to say miss.

Really mixed game from Robin, he was amazing at the end, picking up the goals and winning the game. But then we have the missed penalty and the few chances that he wasted from very good positions which for me just showed that he is still struggling a bit for full sharpness after a poor preseason. Which hopefully means he will only be getting better still for us :)

It was good to see him getting more involved in the build up play at points as well. Noticed a few times when he dropped back to get the ball and was actually deeper than all our midfield. Hopefully next game we have a proper winger out on the left to give Robin even more space.

Came up when we needed him and all that, poor penalty etc. But something thats really noticable when we are playing with RVP up top instead of Rooney in recent years is a big difference in ability to use their body to shield and look after the ball. RVP has been doing that expertly for us so far and even though Rooney is strong and has been since he was a teen, its not something he's ever really had.

Also RVP's chest control is as good as Berbatov's first touch control.

He's brilliant. Has that ability to pull out something special on a consistent basis. He's done it for Arsenal time after time and now 2 games in a row for us. I just we can get the rest of our team sorted to make best use of him.

Yup. RVP's hold-up play and control is so much better than Rooney's.

4 goals in 2 and a bit games- cannot complain, my best friend supports arsenal and says if he stays fit he will get 40 for us this season albeit paining him to say so.

Perspective

He has barely had 3 matches in a united shirt, and some of you are comparing him to Rooney, and even saying he is better. If RvP was still at Arsenal the comparisons with Rooney on this forum would have been laughed off, and seen as wumming.

Van Persie being compared with Rooney would have been laughed off ? Why?

Who was better last year?

The only people laughing it off would have been die hard Rooney fans.

Not quite. Last season he was compared to Rooney, most on here then did prefer Roon as a player but acknowledged the gap was little. It is not as if he was playing in a different league so comparison can be made even after few games. In any case the whole RVP vs Rooney thing is going to be the rehash of Ronaldo vs Rooney before 2007, so better get used to the tediousness.

I think a lot of people would be objective enough to say RVP is every bit as good as Rooney and maybe better. The main thing counting against him is his injury record.

Ok, so he outscored Rooney the one year. How about seasons previously? I also happen to think the majority of the forum would have been laughing at suggestions RvP is better than Rooney.

I see the clown Pete is having a(other) meltdown. Not only did we win but we get to see opposition fans spit their dummies out after. Great stuff.

Shit pen mind, and he missed a sitter. Couldn't have had 5!

He was injured before that. As I've said before, RVP since he's gotten over his injuries, basically the last year and a half now, is better than Rooney, and is currently the best player in England.

Whichever way you might lean, it's not laughable to suggest that one is better than the other. Neither is Ronaldo or Messi.

No they would not.

Maybe if we get number 20. Which could be a while given todays failings.

True. Midfield was weak.

Not this season at least. Players squad numbers are registered usually about a week before seasons start.

Of course that can be changes as players are bought & sold well after that date as well.

nah. he should always wear that 20 shirt. has 'legend' written all over it. and RVP is fast on his way to being a legend on here.

Agreed but Rooney 10 & RvP 9 just makes sense.

He's several inches taller than Rooney and that always makes a difference too. Apart from saying that they are both very good strikers, I think it's hard to make a direct comparison. I think they'll complement each other, as others have said.

Not by everyone. And you only need to check the RVP threads to see that some people considered him the best striker around before we signed him.

I dont see what the fuss is about, its to be expected that RVP is a more complete player with him being in his prime.

He is doing exactly what I expected him to do. It’s odd buying such an already complete player. Not that I am complaining. But if he stays fit he will get over 20 league goals a season.

Or in the real universe. Stayed with a team season after season and won 0 trophies, stayed even after all his friends and colleagues left and saw them become successful, and then finally left to join most successful league side in England.

Season after season? Those seasons where he was injured for the majority & inconsistent on top? I expect you'll defend him now he is your player but lets not try to make it out like he was some poor guy who has been stuck at the club for years and only now got out. Arsenal & Arsene Wenger did a lot more for him than he did for us, one good season for us doesn't change that.

World class player.

I think now that he plays for your team you'll see and appreciate how clinical he is. He scored a lot of goals for us last season and missed a lot of sitters on top! I think some here are expecting him to be a lot more involved but last season he was like this for many games, non-existent and then one chance and he'd score.

Yeah I mentioned this point. He's never going to be a Rooney but he'll score goals and be clinical. Can't wait to see how him and Rooney pair up.

Not really. There were already comparisons between him and Rooney last season, and there was quite a number of people(myself included) who thought he was a better striker than Rooney is. Rooney was scoring goals, but his all-round play last season, and even the season before was at times a joke. Last season, the best strikers in the league were Van Persie and Aguero. I don't see why these comparisons would have been laughed off at.

Going by their careers till date, no doubt i'd have Rooney over him. He's been far too prone to injuries. I also believe at both their bests, Rooney is the better player, more to his game than RVP. But then, as a pure striker, RVP is better.

Hey Pete, take a leaf out of Jazz' book re being a sensible non-Wumming opposition fan.

Or do it on Over The Bar and we'll all be happy.

So he's off to join the Dutch squad, let's hope he can avoid injuries this time

He was amazing in that half season he was in 10/11 too, to be fair. Van Persie is definitely a better striker, in my opinion. I'd have Rooney at his best over Van Persie but to what extent I can justify that given Rooney is very rarely at that level I'm not sure.

If Rooney comes back and starts playing behind Van Persie at the level he was behind Hernandez on the way to the Champions League final, we'll win everything there it to be won. Not sure how likely that is, mind.
