It would be again excellent if you could go past the headlines and read the stuff underneath.

DailyMail

Telegraph

Guardian

BBC

 That is what I posted from the BBC. The Guardian article says we originally offered 15m, not that we're paying 15m up front. I see you left the SSN one out there, and Daily Mail is hardly concrete. I actually missed that part of the Telegraph, it wasn't intentional.

I'd trust the BBC ahead of the rest, don't know about you.

Look at it from the other side - if £15m plus add-ons is true then we got him for about the same price as Sunderland are about to pay for Steven Fletcher.

As some may know I am a huge fan of Welbeck, but I don't think signing Van Persie will be a big impediment for his career. If he is as good as I think he is, he will be in the first XI soon soon anyways (whoever else joins the club)

Just like to point out those lineups Gary Neville posted were not meant to be taken seriously and were just used for a rehearsal at Sky.

Right, just to highlight the extent to which this is a very unusual signing (and the extent to which I'm a massive nerd), and with the cost considered a massive break with tradition, I quickly knocked up a chart using every single outfield player Sir Alex has bought during his time with the club, including RVP:

Now look, if you don't mind the change that's fair enough, that's your prerogative, but people trying to make out that it isn't a massive break with tradition are simply wrong. This is especially so when you look at how many of the over-24's were in the 80s and 90s.

Hurry up with medicals and press conference, because the 'he's old' discussion is boring.

That's as close as you're going to get to a bell-shaped curve, with such a small data set. A bell-shaped curve within which Van Persie sits neatly. Being a "massive nerd" I'm sure you'd realise that a true outlier on a graph like that would have to sit outside the curve.

So no, his signing is not a "massive break with tradition". The evidence being provided in the graph you conveniently pulled together.

No offense but I disagree with your statistical reasoning, having said that, I have no standing point on whether the signing of RvP is aligned with or inconsistent with our transfer traditions. That is a histogram and not a graph, therefore you cannot draw the same conclusions on how the tips would converge into a line as if it were a series of outcomes with e.g. time.

I feel a partnership with Rooney will see our Wayne improve. Being able to play with less of a goal scoring burden should prove to be relieving. Who will take penalties and close-range freekicks though!? Imo, RvP is the better penalty taker but I'm having a hard time seeing Rooney giving up that role.

The elephant in the room will be how Rooney will work out with RVP...It could work but I believe it could also force SAF to consider moving the player...If Kagawa plays in the hole with RVP at CF and Rooney isn't a wide player so who is going to sit?...It's a great addition but I do think it raises questions on what formation will maximize the talent in the squad...I mean what about Young & Nani?...That width makes a big difference

It'll give Rooney a real kick in the backside. He's no longer got that guarantee of being our best player. He's got competition in the form of someone who out performed him last season and his place isn't as nailed down as it was these last few seasons.

Think it'll inspire him to do better and raise his game. Would be great for him.

Anyone know when he is likely to arrive in Manchester for the medical?

It would be interesting to see what his shot to goal ratio is, i always had the impression that he is quite deadly in front of goal.

Sky Sports showed the leading goal scorers since 2007 and both Rooney and RVP are top of the list, so encouraging signs.

Bit harsh! He might not be the slimiest player, but an elephant?! :nono:;)

We'll see a lot of Kagawa on the left and in central midfield I reckon.

Front four of Rooney RVP Kagawa and Nani all interchanging.

City played a really effective front four of Aguero Tevez Silva and Nasri towards the end. City's two attacking midfielders didn't line up in the hole on paper but it didn't restrict them influencing matches.

The big difference, for me, would be that City doesn't have a true CF in that 4 you mention whereas United have 2...Rooney doesn't have to play there but he's not a wide player anymore either...Nani can interchange and move to either flank...I think that will probably be the best experiment but still leaves Young out

IF, and it's a big if, SAF can get Rooney to accept playing wide then perhaps they can maximize the potential...but I don't think it's ideal...Kagawa's strength as a SS is that he can release anyone in that attacking trident - especially the wide players (Presumably Young & Nani) and RVP is the perfect foil for that sort of attack at CF...In any event, it gives SAF a lot of options to consider but will everyone buy into it let alone be happy...I always got the impression that Rooney wasn't up for playing 2nd fiddle after CR left

Only one of your sources even mentions add-ons in the headline.

Papers often use the "top price", it's got more wow factor to it. As I've already shown you, plenty in the know reckon it's 15m plus addons that can possibly take it to 22-24.

And what does that tell you? You just presume that it includes addons or something? If you look at the equivalent Modric articles they mention the addons, so why don't these.

You've only given one source

Like I said, BBC said 22.5m up front, you don't trust your national broadcaster?

Your username is so apt sometimes.
