It was getting a bit ridiculous the way people were underrating him, claiming there won't be a big difference because welbeck was in decent form.

Didn't someone suggest that we would possibly be worse if we re-introduced him into the team? I'm certain something along those lines was implied several weeks back in this thread.

Best centre forward on earth returns to starting line up. Team is weaker :nervous:

Yeah I remember reading that... Laughable really. I mean this is a guy that carried us to the title last season, and is our leading scorer despite missing half the season... yet he would make us play worse. Right. It's the same shite logic as when people say we can get rid of Rooney now that we have Mata. 1 world class player is possible to close down and stop you from playing. 3 world class players at once though? What are the chances of all of them having off days at the same time?

Let's hope he can stay fit, as you can tell just his mere presence on the fit had the Cardiff defenders pushed back and worried.

For the love of everything, stay healthy. Even with the rustiness he looks so comfortable on the ball it's not even funny.

Has he ever played wide in a front 3?

Since Rooney can't play wide effectively, I wonder if a front 3 of van Persie, Rooney and Mata could work, with Rooney in the middle.

In his early days at Arsenal he played out wide. I don't see the point though. He's our most clinical player and a focal point.

It would require a hell of a lot of running. More than I'd be comfortable with to be honest. I'd prefer Rooney on the left if we were ever to go down that route.

I think I started to forget just how good his technical ability is... some of the shit he was pulling off in the first half was superb - and this from a man who isn't match sharp.

I thought today was an average last season performance from us. Decent without being spectacular and RVP getting us the important goal.

If he'd been fully fit this season we would probably have turned more of our shit performances into points. Amazing what having your best striker fit can do.

Fantastic performance for a player who hasn't played for a relatively long time. Very good to see.

He has time on the ball like not many players. It's very hard to rush him because he has the strength to hold defenders off and the technique to manipulate the ball. I just can't wait for us to abandon our current setup, play the likes of Januzaj, mata and Kagawa/Rooney behind him and focus more on playing through the middle.

Whatever about his amazing technical ability, I'd forgotten how strong he is. It's brilliant to see him back.

As many others have said before me, you forget what a quality player we have on our ranks in RvP. He simply oozes class, it is evident in the way he handles himself, shields the ball and the first touch.

World class holdup play. Hope he stays fit for the rest of the season as that will be crucial for our top 4 chances.

I wouldn't be happy too, entering your final peak years only to find yourself likely to miss next year's CL whilst suffering the a-technical dross from the likes of Valencia, Cleverly and co.
We all know it will take time to rebuild and he's thinking am I here to waste my early 30s assisting others to win trophies when he's retiring?

Is it just me or he doesn't look happy yesterday night?
One sees what one wants to see.

Didn't get know about Cleverley and valencia when he signed then?

When he signed, Valencia was still a player who's had one great season and one ok-ish one. There was hope that he would regain his United player of the season form... nobody knew he was this rubbish.

Cleverly was seen as quite a prospect to back then, just check the hope people had in him back then.. shown up to be rubbish as well.

And I'm sure he did not know Fergie would retire a season into his career here... got fecked over a bit.

Yeah, that premier league medal he was trying to get for years at arsenal surely fecked him over. You're the best poster here Kevin but you're wrong about this.

Irwin, if Arsenal did win the league this year dont you think there is a part of him that would look back and think, shit, if I had stayed put maybe Id have won the league with Arsenal after all, perhaps I made a mistake? Not like an overwhelming regret that pushes him into a deep and prolonged depression, just a feeling that things didnt pan out quite as he imagined and a feeling that if he had made a different choice perhaps he would be happier?

I dont have a strong opinion about it to be honest and certainly I dont think Arsenal will win the league this year (or next or next) so its all academic anyway. But my guess is if he couldve won the league with Arsenal he would have preferred that.

Football logic: Journalists & fans seem to think that seasons last six months. How many of these people are now claiming, say, Owen Coyle is destined for greatness; Paul Lambert the same; Ian Holloway has really established his Blackpool team in the PL? Early on last season, a few RAWKites were banned for posting stuff like 'Taxi for the tiki-taka tithead', so inept Rodgers appeared to be...yet now he's, apparently, 'the best British manager, obviously'. Last season, Roberto Martinez took his team down but now he's Guardiola-in-waiting, it seems. 'Dour dinosaur' Moyes, whose team were so hard to beat that they cost us a title, is now cast as a clown who can't compare to the stylish Spanish genius at Everton. Tony Pulis, whose name was a byword for all that's wrong about British football management, is now 'fantastic'. Oh, and RVP surely regrets leaving perennial under-achievers Arsenal - no trophies in eight years, remember - for that club which has practically won 99/100 titles for ages; after all, Arsenal have had such a glorious six months...and, apparently, six months equals 'forever'. I could go on, and I probably will, but you get the idea...

In conclusion, SAF might as well have told us to 'stick by your manager, for a few months - if you have the patience - and then hold stupid opinions about him because the newspapers told you to.'

He was class yesterday. His hold up play and his passing was good. In the box he was a genuine threat. It's a massive step up from Welbeck (who was really good in his absence btw). Having RVP, Rooney and Mata fit and playing will make up for our poor midfield at least until the end of the season. Hope he stays fit. We need that 4th place.

That's brilliant. Kind of like that Trainspotting quote. That last line is especially true. Too many people form their opinions the way the press narrates the story.

Excellent post.
