It's good that he's possibly coming back needing to fit within a team rather than having the team fit around him. It'll take the pressure off.

Robin is progressing, he’s coming on, and he is feeling quite good," David Moyes said. "He had a similar injury at Arsenal on his thigh, so it is something we have to be sure about [before he returns]. It wouldn’t be much good if it got repeated, so we will try to take it steady.”
With 10 goals in all competitions so far this season, the Dutch international has continued in a similar vein to his first year at Old Trafford, when his 26 goals were key to a 20th league title triumph. When asked if Boxing Day was too soon for Robin to restart his campaign, Moyes replied, “I think it probably will be.”
The manager pointed out that the timing of van Persie's return to availability is decided by a collective, including the striker himself as well as the staff.
“Obviously the medical team are controlling him, but we speak to Robin as well about how he feels and what he feels he needs to do. We’re doing everything we can to make sure he’s well looked after and well treated.”

I like how Robin has a say in his return, I think the best way to know if he's well enough is ask himself, its always helpful to know if he has something wrong the physios can help.

I'm glad that Moyes has pointed out a conscious effort to take time to let him properly heal, rather than rushing him back prematurely and him suffering setbacks. We could have a really good second half of the season if him and Rooney are both fit and firing.

Would be super foolish to rush him back.

That said, it'd be nice to have him back for the Tottenham game or so.

I think he's only been at his best for a handful of appearances this season.

Will elevate our game if he returns fully fit. His link-up play is sensational when on form.

I think the best thing for Robin now is to give him a serious rest. Send him on holidays if we have to. Let him fully heal and have him return in the new year fresh and fit.

Give him a holiday as has been said and let him come back refreshed. It'll be like a new signing...

It's such a shame that he's been injured so much throughout his career. Would have been the best striker of his generation if he was a relatively injury free player.

Physioroom has updated his return date as 1st of Jan 2014 from 11th Jan. Don't remember any update from Moyes on this topic, except the 'miracle' thing he talked about for Carrick and RvP. Even if not 1st Jan, if he is back for FA cup game, it will be great. It will mean we can give Rooney some rest.

I'm probably resigned to losing him at the end of the season. :( Wouldn't blame him if he wanted to leave.

I'd rather he stayed out for as long as it takes him to get fully fit. Rushing him back half fit and peripheral is of no use.

He's been unfit for large parts of the season.

In fact I can only remember the Arsenal game when thinking of matches that he's looked his usual self.

If we drop out of the top four I won't begrudge him a move to be honest.

Moyes has really suffered with this injury to Van Persie. The problems with our play were there last season under Ferguson, but were often masked by Van Persie's sensational form. Without Van Persie we simply struggle to score and create chances, its been an unfortunate issue for Moyes to deal with.

His best game this season IMO, he was excellent. I still think Moyes has made the wrong decision by playing him high up the field. I thought he was excellent at interchanging with Rooney last season. Personally, I don't think we have missed him that much. Nonetheless, it will be great to have him back.

Does anyone believe these rumours about him being unhappy with Moyes training style? Yes he's been injured, but even when playing he hasn't given that vibe of joy he had all last season...

We haven't missed him? We've been shit this season. Would have been great to have a fully fit rvp making defences look silly.

Missed this guy immensely. Best striker in the league.

No, I don't think we have missed him at all. Welbeck has done just fine, since Van Persie's been out. Our wingers on the other hand...

Edit - have not haven't *

Our wingers were shit last season too yet Rvp helped us dominate the league.

I can't imagine any of our strikers being happy with the service they're getting. Rooney has seemed frustrated on the pitch recently as well, kicking out at players and getting himself yellow cards. Hernandez is non existent in games because of lack of service.

I don't seem to get why a lot of people seem to think robin will want out by the end of the season, someone care to update me on what I've missed? And where are these rumours of him not being happy with Moyes's training regimes?

By giving Van Persie a 'bespoke' training plan the coaching staff have essentially admitted that Van Persie's training plan was not working for him. There has been a lot of smoke around the issue and I think that you would have to be naive not to think that there was not something in it.

I find Moneymay's comment about us not missing him to be bizarre in the extreme. Personally I feel that getting Van Persie fit and happy again, which will result in good form, is the key to rescuing our season. Fergie was always right about Rooney IMO, great player though he is, he just isn't quite good enough to be the main man for Manchester United. Van Persie was last season and we need him to be again in the second half of this season.

Van Persie wasn't solely responsible for that. We had some players who had great seasons: Ferdinand, Carrick, Rafael, etc. IMO, missed means that we need his presence to make us function ideally/better than current form or we notice that something is lacking while he is out injured. And as far as I'm aware, neither one applies. Welbeck has come in and done a great job. Van Persie was in good - but not brilliant form - pre-injury, so it's not like we're missing out on much, plus Moyes has used him in a different role, where he is a bit higher up the field. Welbeck, on the other hand, has contributed more to the build up and has linked up well. It's going to be great to see him back, he's going to score many goals in the second half of the season if he stays fit, but we've not suffered with him out injured and it's not sincere to say that he has been missed IMO.

By the way, Theon is going to reply to the post above me because a poster disagrees with what I said, and he's still mad, despite this being a football forum.

Edit - Told you so.

Oh it was at the beginning of the season really...he denied any rift, but there is no doubt something was up...but as has been stated above...seems like things were changed for him. I do think he was really devastated when Fergie left...must have been a total surprise to him. It would surprise me if he hasn't affected him mentally..

"Robin van Persie has dismissed speculation that he is unhappy with life under new Manchester United manager David Moyes.
Reports in the Daily Star and Metro said that van Persie had told friends that he missed former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, with the Dutchman allegedly unconvinced by Moyes’ training methods.
Van Persie enjoyed a fruitful start to the season, scoring twice in the Community Shield win over Wigan before notching another double in United’s 4-1 victory over Swansea."

Look at the post below you. It depends on your definition on what constitutes to missing said player. If the alternative option was playing poorly, then you would have a case, but that's the if game. Welbeck had a great December. I also disagree with this notion that Rooney isn't good enough to be the main, that's just not right. He performed well as the main man in 09/10, 10/11 (second half), and 11/12 (first half). He's performing brilliantly as the main man right now.

I think that Van Persie scored in 4 out of the last 5 games when he played close to 90 minutes. He also puts the fear factor into the hearts of opposition teams. If he were in the team recently then I fully believe that we would have picked up more points as a result of his goals. He was exactly the player that we needed when we were turning the screw on Spurs at the weekend.

As for Rooney. Main men do not do half seasons, they do full seasons by definition. 09/10 we came up short. I seem to remember that Rooney disappeared in the run in, something about shagging whores whilst his pregnant wife was at home had something to do with it if I remember correctly.

Unreliable at the top end.

We really would have given us 9 to 10 points if he was available imo. His absence shouldnt be underestimated

Aye, that's how I feel. Props to Danny for stepping it up, I'm very happy for him and I'ma let him finish, but I think that games like Spurs wouldn't be lost if we had Robin up front. We were tearing them apart the first 15 minutes.

Agreed, we most certainly miss Van Persie - as any team would.
