I cant wait for monday now, its so hot I am a bit wet thinking about it already.

It's almost hilarious that we ignore the main issue of the team once again and instead pay big money for a 29-year-old, injury prone striker.

Looking forward to the 5-0-5 formation. Will Kagawa be shunted out wide or pigeonholed into CM? Or just benched most of the time?

I'm buzzing ahead of the season now. Can't wait to see Cleverley and Vidic back, and RvP linking up with Rooney - plus Kagawa, who I suspect will be the signing of the season.

RVP wont start on monday IMO, he has had hardly any pre season and played only 20 minutes of his last friendly.

Great signing. Chuffed.

Think this will help us kill off teams when 1-0 up as well as help score winners in tight matches. Not necessarily RVP himself, but the extra pressure for places his signing will bring. Likewise, his experience in Europe will be priceless.

Seeing him and Rooney pair up with Nani and Valencia off the flanks is as good as an attacking front 4 in the whole of Europe - as good as Giggs, Cole, Yorke, Beckham imo.

I don't share the mass hysteria about looking for a new midfielder this summer as We have enough talent and experience in midfield with Carrick and Scholes and assuming Cleverley and Anderson will perform better than last year. Powell and Fletcher will also hopefully make an impact.

What that means is that SAF and the scouts have another year to identify a CM which will be critical in the winter or next summer to complete a successful renovation to that part of our squad and we will have the money to do so from next years budget.

An amazing 24 months in terms of building a new team with DDG, Smalling, Jones, Young, Hernandez, Kawaga, RVP all joining (and Evans, Rafael, Welbeck and Clverely emerging from the youth teams). And some cliam we don't sign players???????

A complete transformation ... and this new team feels like it has magic all over the place.

That was the 28th September and if I remember right, he'd been injured and hadn't played a minute of football since the Portugal game in Euro 2004 (3 months right?).

Fergie's inner muppet often gets the better of him.

how was it his inner muppet?

Rooney scored a hat trick and got an assist in that game...

He hadn't played a minute of football in 3 months. Every single pundit and fan expected him to play 20 mins MAX from the bench, but Fergie couldn't resist the temptation to play him. Obviously it worked out better than anyone could of expected but that isn't my point, my point is, don't count out RVP starting on Monday.

I guess, though Van Persie has been training all pre-season and played a friendly for Arsenal and hasn't been injured for what 18 months now, not really the same situation tbh.

plus Rooney would have been training as well so Fergie would have known how ready or not he was and clearly decided that he was fit to play and it was a tactical masterstroke to do so as it turned out...

I dont think the pundits knew about Rooney's actual fitness. Fergie might know a fair bit more from being his manager. I dont think Fergie gambled on Rooney that day. Having said that, I dont think Van Persie will start as well. I think we'll stick to our 4-5-1 formation for away games and Rooney will be that '1'.

Are you two deliberately missing the point?

A poster said, RVP has only played 20 mins in pre-season so I don't think SAF will play him.

My point was, Rooney hadn't played a game in 3 months and he played. There is no debate here

Wouldn't be sure of that, reckon SAF will struggle to resist, remember Rooney!

Rooney played on adrenaline on his debut. If you remember he had a dip after that debut for a few games. We could easily start van Persie but I think he'll come on in the second half

If we manged to bring in some cover for Evra and CM we would be be sorted for years. Honestly that would leave us totally idle in the transfer market for 2-3 years.

It's very difficult try to forecast what will happen in a week let alone in 2-3 years.

Agree on Rooney.

I think we should start with Kagawa behind Rooney on Monday too, but we can't discount SAF's desperation to get RVP in his team.

Pleased we've got him but really would have prefered we strengthened the midfield a bit more.

Jeez this shit again?

We now have the option of lining up against City with Kagawa playing the attacking midfield role, the real area we've been lacking at in those huge games. In the past 2 seasons Rooney has played in the hole behind the striker, he never mastered the role that Kagawa will play.

Behind Kagawa will be Carrick and one of Cleverley, Anderson, Scholes, Powell etc etc. More than enough options.

Not discussing 'the point' here. It's about you calling Fergie a muppet for the decision to play Rooney back then. He knows a bit more than you about the actual situation.

Absolutely mental. Will take a game or two to get used to. Very excited though that's for sure.

I'd be no less confident about the coming season if this signing hadn't happened so it's all a bit meh for me.

RvP was Arsenal's hero, that makes him our mercenary in my book. He's someone who might score 30+ goals next season, and I'd celebrate them all, but his name would never go on the back of my shirt (if I were still into having other men's names there).

Gotta wish him good luck though. He'll need it.

Jamie Sanderson(A Big Arsenal fan and also a journalist)Says that he'd earned more at Arsenal if he stayed there instead of moving to United.

As much as I rate Van Persie, i would have preferred to see a midfielder come in. Someone like Daniele De Rossi.

I remember games like Newcastle away when our midfield were totally out battled and outclassed. I dont see a reason as to why that couldn't happen again this season.

With fans like you, no doubt heckling when he doesnt score a hattrick every match, he'll need more than luck

Jesus. We just signed the leagues top scorer and player of the year and you find it a bit meh What the feck is wrong with you?

Agree. Its nice to get one over on a rival club, but i prefer us to find our own heroes, rather than buying another clubs.

I don't think he is a mercenary as that would involve going somewhere purely for the money. From van Persies perspective he is at an age where he needs to win trophies and soon. Arsenal have been making excuses too long and just not delivered despite RVPs best efforts so I don't think they can begrudge him leaving, maybe just the destination.

Cantona, Cole, Yorke, Sheringham, Rio, Carrick were all big players and or heroes at their previous clubs.

WE found none of them. We purchased based on their already existing quality.

Did you object to any of these in the same way as RVP?

I'll wait until the window is over before passing judgement on this, I certainly don't think this signing addresses our core issues.

So you'd have turned down Zidane when he left Juve?...

The fact is United will always create players. We've a strong batch of kids. Singing RVP don't change that and it's not a deal that we'll see season after season. SIr Alex and the club will always promote from within and over the last years we've bought in a ton of young players and lost A LOT of experience in Brown, O'shea, VDS, Hargreaves, Owen, Park, Berbatov and eventually Scholes and Giggs...

Yes but the price, wages and age of those players (combined) is completely incomparable, in truth.

Rio is probably the closest, but he was 7 years younger when we got him.

And I remember games like Newcastle at home, Wigan away and City away when we either did not take our chances or did not create any.
