Roberto Firmino

I don't think our interest is that strong at all. Firmino is not really a striker, it's definitely not his best position.

When it comes to the sort of players we need, this has to be bottom of the list. Right back, centreback, a replacement for Carrick, and a proper striker to take some of the burden off of Rooney are what we desperately need. When it comes to creativity behind the strikers we've got Mata, Di Maria, Young, Depay and Januzaj. Rooney, Herrera and Pereira can obviously play there as well.

Good signing for them if true. Didn't make much sense for us to go for him anyway, given that he's a #10 mainly and we're stocked with those.

Interesting. Had a feeling it would be between Liverpool, us and City. I guess we weren't in for him, unless he thought he'd suit Liverpool more with game-time and position perhaps.

Looks like the type of player who will sink or swim like Phelps.

Not really, we play Fellaini there, the only other 2 we have are Rooney who is not creative enough and Mata who is too weak. A #10/9 hybrid like Firmino would have given us a dynamic edge we lacked last season.

So how will they line up with he and Coutinho together?

Loads of Brazilian/German followers are raving about him on Twitter. Smart signing.

He's more of a forward then a midfielder. And if we get another midfielder like we are linked with Schweinsteiger and Gundogan then we'll have Herrera who can either be the 8 or 10, or Mata going there, or Di Maria, and then Pereira coming through as well. We're not short on options there, especially if things go well with those players.

Firmino, Sterling, Coutinho, Sturridge, that's a very fast and dynamic attack. One to look out for. If they can get a Illaramendi, Clyne too, they have a solid XI.

Thank feck Sterling's leaving, and Sturridge is a perma crock.

That has the makings of a very nice team to watch even after removing Sterling. Full of pace and technical ability.

Herrera isn't a proper #10 and Mata and Di Maria wont play there under LvG, both lack the strength to play centrally and Di Maria is way too careless. As for Pereira, he's just a kid with zero experience, I don't even count him in the equation at the moment.

Their back five is still utterly wank and their central midfield is bang average. Signing Firmino shouldn't really worry any of the sides above them, should it?

If he was as good as people are making him sound he wouldn't be joining Liverpool.

I don't know if they're after a CB but Clyne will be another smart signing and will allow Can to go into CM where he's much more effective.

Maybe something like in the 2013/14 season

Can
Milner-Henderson
Coutinho
Sturridge-Firmino
There's no natural width in that front 3 at all. I guess their fullbacks would provide that but that would leave their terrible defense exposed a lot.

If they can get 50m for Sterling and only pay a third of that to Firmino it'll be good business. Fair play.

Probably a good signing, in fairness. Although I'm sure that was said about many of their arrivals last summer.

Clyne and Moreno would provide width as full backs in a 4-2-3-1.

With verstaility from Milner, Coutinho and Firmino behind Sturridge, they're as flexible and have as much width as Arsenal.

Lots of versatility and movement to break in transitions which negates the need for width if you keep a defensive shape well.

Markovic, Lallana, Ibe, Ojo etc can fill in any of the attacking midfield 3 positions if needed too.

Can, Lucas, Henderson, Allen for the 2 central midfield places with Milner a possibility too.

Sturridge will be injured and Sterling will either not be there or be in dismal form thanks to the crowd and his team mates being on his back.

Until they sign a striker their best line up will probably be Firmino up front with Lallana and Coutinho behind him. And Firmino's conversion rate is wank, even worse than Sterling's. Or Ings will be the main man and Then they'll end up with something like...

Mignolet
Clyne - Skrtel - Sakho - Moreno
Can
Henderson - Milner/Lallana
Coutinho
Ings - Firmino

Those players, maybe a different formation. Not much to fear there. Obviously with Sturridge instead of Ings it looks a lot better but still far short of top four quality. The spine is ridiculously weak.

As Arsenal? Arsenal have the likes of Sanchez, Chamberlain, Welbeck and Walcott; proven players at getting beyond the opposition full backs with power and pace. Liverpool have one player in that mould of any real quality and he's about to be sold.

If they are relying on Clyne and Moreno to compensate for that then they are in bigger trouble than envisaged. Good players, but attacking demons they are not.

I don't think Liverpool's problems are the type that can be fixed in one window and they really have no chance at top 4 this year. But they're improving the squad without spending a great deal and leaving it in a better position if/when they get rid of Rodgers. Then they'll have more PL money in and will have a better ability to spend big where needed.

Well in that list of players,

Sterling looks odds on to be leaving so he won be there
Sturridge is a walking sick note and can't be relied upon
They haven't actually got Clyne or illaremendi

That said firmino and coutinho partnership could be good for them though.

I for one would have loved Torres and Suarez but they went to Liverpool and turned out okay.

I think it is a very good signing just based on his creativity. Coutinho is growing as a player and if they can get a solid midfield of Henderson Milner and Can that's fairly decent, considering how cack ours is without Carrick they should do fine. Challenge for the title no but then without additions I doubt we will either.

Hadn't heard of him a couple of months ago and now he's going to lead Liverpool to glory apparently.

Absurd to think that we have scouted him extensively and chose not to buy him.

LvGs (lack of) ability to utilise and maximize center forwards potential will see him fail.

Was dreading his signing to be honest. We already have too many players who can play in that role. Glad he's gone scouse.

Also, when Skysports said a deal had been agreed with an "undisclosed club" it was obvious it wasn't us. We don't play those stupid games.
