if you didn't have mounting debts, i don't think Leeds would even contemplated a bid of any sort.. but the fact is you guys are in financial problems...feck knows how you'll finance and fill your new stadium...

i suppose you needed to qualify for the CL this year... the lack of qualification will hit your pockets... which was the last thing you needed after the amount of debts you've got....

its all the way down from here, baby... ;)

you had your chance but 'sadly' missed out on a trophy :D

Don't doubt my sources... ;)

TeamTalk:
United are expected to up their offer for Rio Ferdinand, who will hold talks with Leeds on Thursday after his transfer request was rejected.
Ferdinand ended days of speculation on Wednesday by handing in a transfer request at Elland Road and United are now ready to go back in with an improved offer of around £25m for the England international.
Leeds have admitted that offers for any players will be considered on their merits after Peter Ridsdale conceded the chances of keeping the former West Ham man now are slim.
He said: "We are a public company, I am merely an employee and I have a duty to shareholders to maximise the value of our assets.
"If we receive any reasonable offer for any of our players, including Rio, we will consider it and debate it but that is not the position at the moment."
Sir Alex Ferguson is unlikely to be given the go-ahead to break last summer's transfer record of the £28m United paid for Juan Sebastian Veron, although the Ferdinand deal could go through if the Old Trafford offer is closer to that figure, while Leeds are holding out for a world record fee for a defender.
United opened their bidding for Ferdinand at £20m, an increase of just £2m on the fee Leeds paid West Ham for the defender 18 months ago and with Leeds chairman Ridsdale describing the initial offer as 'derisory', an increased bid is due from Old Trafford.

So what was the point of him saying Rio would stay..when its not his decision?

You quoted his words as "evidence" that he would stay on here..why did you do that if you felt his words were meaningless?

What a shambles...Leeds are a laughing stock

He was speaking on behalf of the board Davo as well as giving his own personel viewpoint.

I quoted his words because that is better than pretending to 'know' from insiders etc.

I have not said his words were meaningless.

Elmo.....of course Rio can be as vacuous and mean hearted...it is about money at the end of the day.

There is no loyalty in football...Leeds are not unique in getting rid of players or managers. Some who appear smug at the moment have suffered similarly in the past. ;)

So you use his quotes to suggest that Rio is staying, despite knowing that Rio could still go..

You're not very good at admitting you were wrong are you?

You were very confident he'd stay...along with Bowyer...

Spot on

so, a player who moved to Leeds cuz they

1.gave him mo' dough
2.bolstered hi ego with their record transfer fee offer
3.the chance to win trophies (??)

is NOW vacuous and mean hearted cuz he wants to move to OT cuz we will

1.give him mo' dough
2.bolster his ego with our record transfer fee offer
3.the chance to win trophies (!!)

live by the sword, die by firing squad? i think not.

I thought Bowyer would stay as there were no indications he was going until he refused to sign a contract when he said he would.

Of course Rio might go...I had no reason to think he would though until he asked for a transfer.

The news that some of your big players want out must have come as a big shock to you then..

I expected it

Radd...yes but he signed a contract with Leeds on those conditions....he only played 73 games for Leeds...he's not even been there 2 seasons....so yes it is mean hearted to move so soon for those same terms.

Come On !!!! These talks are takin ages...I am waiting to hear Ridsale say: We have accepted an offer for Rio!!!

Have a bit of patience! :)

A statement read: "We had a meeting today (Thursday) and we had amicable and constructive talks about his future.

" I reiterate the fact that we do not want to sell him and would like him to fulfill the contract that he signe in 2000. We have reived no bid from anyone that comes anywhere near to the valuation that we put on a player we regard as the best defender in the world."

Bloody hell United, make a (right) bid before they set off for the far east or we might as well look elsewhere.

I must admit I don’t understand was SAF is on about when he say’s that this deal is going to take to long. If Leeds is still saying they have not received any bids then what the hell is going on?

How can we hope do get this moving if we have not placed a bid? Something is starting to smell about this one and yet again the fans are left wondering what the hell to think!

Come on United have we placed a bid or not or is this just an attempt to make it look like we are attempting to spend money when the club is not willing to do so.

Peter Ridsdale has told Rio Ferdinand that Leeds still do not want to sell him after meeting the England defender.
The Leeds chairman described the talks as "amicable and constructive" and stressed that Manchester United have not made a bid which would be acceptable to the club.

Ridsdale also claimed that Ferdinand assured him that he would be fully committed to the Elland Road club if he does not leave.

Are we making a bid or not, or are we just messing this player around? he has taken a massive risk for use. What the hell is going on?

Good point Nigel, though Rio was supposed to have showdown talks with Ridsdale today, the results of which should leak within the next 24 hours. Rio could be a Red by next week imo.

I think we need to wait I little longer but I am getting edgy as SAF put it, something is not adding up!

The ball is now firmly in our court. We need to put in a realistic offer right away if we are really serious. It's going to have to be something they can't refuse - the time for playing games is over. If we want him we going to have to pay for him.

Agreed. 30m take it or leave it.

BREAKING NEWS

on sky there saying we are in talks with leeds right now for a 27mil deal rising to 30 on app

should be anounced to the stock exchanged tonight

what time does it close ? the stock exchange market...

very soon he will sign at OT the same way - cum on, Leeds didn't sign him to do him a personal favour - the PLC thought he was worth plonking all that cash down - now they again decide if they can "maximise their assets" they will...
they don't HAVE to let him go if they don't want to ... if he feels OT will be a good (giant!) career step, Leeds have only themselves to blame for the fact they haven't won anything in a while AND they sacked the manager who signed him - sounds like a club that wants to go places
 it's not even like it's his home club - if he could turn his back on East London for those reasons, West Yorkshire , well...

funny, clubs don't seem to complain about contracts when managers have to go...
accept it, all contracts are re-negotiable and this is how this one goes

dont know its just what that leeds sky reporter is saying, david craig i think

Isn't there a deadline when you must sign Rio if he is to play in the CL?

August 1st??

I thought it was the 8th.

The deadline is August 8 for the QUALIFIERS. The deadline for the first 8 matches is August 31st.

As for Sky saying we're in talks... Don't buy it. Hope so though ;)

Nothing up on Sky website - bollox I think. No need to announce on Stock Exchange anyway.

Aye.
Problem is we haven't stepped much forward this summer either.

To be honest the Stock exchange never closes, it just the reporting of it. However nothing on SKY and I don't think there will be.

I do think the Stock exchange has something to do with all of this though, even if we don't bye any players we have to look like we are going to, keeps the club's value as high as possible.

Can you imagine the value of the shares if man utd reported no new players this summer!

And Cantona was with you for? (9 months)

And played? (36 games)

Your point being?

It's not mean hearted, it's a fact of life. Cantona snatched the title for you from under our noses and was sold without even hinting at wanting a transfer. If Rio feels the ambition aint there and wants to leave, I can't see Leeds standing in his way.

The heart you should be questioning is in the Leeds boardroom, not in Rio. Ambition must be there from both sides.

IMO Rio asked for transfer knowing pretty well that SAF will bid for him. Now that things are at an impasse, and he's leaving for that tour soon, it won't look too good for Fergie and us if there's no further developments. N how's Rio gonna feel? :(

Right... So United have 24 hours to make this right rather than to make Rio Ferdinand the biggest fool the world has seen in a long time...

It's not just how Rio would feel! If we keep messing players and club's around like this who the hell will be interested if they here that Man utd are interested in them. They may feel that they would be better to deal with a club who do just play games!

This all has the ring of Sol Campbell about it remember all last summer week after week we showed an interest in him, only to let him go to Arsenal and what did they do!

imagine the repercussions involved here... any prospective targets of ours won't want to follow in Rio's footsteps if the worst happens in a day's time....

Ridsdale already said he would not object to selling Ferdinand to Manchester United in particular. It's all about the money and United hae to stand in NOW. We've come this far - Rio wants to go, Leeds are willing to sell - we can't just stop now.

Anyhow, I do expect developments. Our previous bid was apparently weeks ago so something new will happen now as whatever happened in the last couple of days should encourage the club to go for it.
