Rio Ferdinand Saga. (RIO ASKS FOR TRANSFER)

United have not been in contact with Leeds since Ridsdale rejected an offer, believed to be worth around £20m, from Reds chief executive Peter Kenyon some weeks ago.

It is understood that United will not make a new approach unless the Leeds board weaken in their resolve to keep Ferdinand.

United will continue to monitor the situation and the next move is down to Leeds or Ferdinand.

If Ferdinand digs his heels in, then Leeds may accept, however reluctantly, that they have no alternative but to let him go.

That would be the green light for United to come back with a second revised bid.

However if Leeds remain determined to make Ferdinand honour the remainder of his contract, then Sir Alex Ferguson will be forced to move on to his other defensive targets.

Strengthening his defence is Ferguson's overriding priority this summer and he cannot wait forever for Ferdinand.

Guardian have just posted this slightly worrying stance:

Manchester United will not make a fresh bid for Rio Ferdinand unless Leeds change their mind and decide to sell him.
Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has again insisted Ferdinand will not be leaving Elland Road after rejecting a transfer request from the England defender.

United have been keenly following developments at Leeds, but director of communications Paddy Harverson would only say after this latest twist: "We have no comment to make."

I sincerely hope that is bullshit. We should put in a bid asap - we ought to have had it prepared for ages.

that unless Leeds change their stance on the situation and agree to sell him, then we will not be making a bid for him.....

"All he is asking is to be allowed to go a year earlier."

hmmm, plot thickens...

So United made a bid which was rejected. We will not make another until Leeds grant Rio his request. Sounds fair enough to me. What can we do if Leeds won't let him go? Nothing. The ball's in Rio's court and we don't enter the picture until he gets his wish.

We could stick a bid in to make them change their minds - otherwise this is end of story, they obviously know about his get-out clause next year, but are prepared to run that risk - we've not offered more money than his get-out clause value. At this rate we will be signing Thuram and Rio then going to Juve. Why not just make another fecking bid?

yes but Leeds would lose out on maybe 10 million if they sell him next year, it's all a smokescreen I tell ya, he's a red!

Rio's got himself into a right mess now...

United have bid turned down for Rio

Risdale: Rio's going nowhere

Rio: I have a big decision to make

Risdale: A transfer request will be rejected

Rio hands in transfer request. Agent claims he wants to play for United.

Leeds reject transfer request.

United refuse to renew bid until Leeds agree to transfer list the player.

Rio's stuck in limbo now. His time at Leeds is effectively over (he can't go back now), but until we make a bid, he's stuck.

Its obvious all the manoeuvres and press statements by Risdale are all tactical game play in an attempt to bugger us for all the money they can. He has been playing it smart, and is attempting to get as much compensation (re breakage of the various clauses i.e Rio can't be sold to another PL team before three years are up) as he can.

However I think the statement by PK is an attempt to prevent this happening. He knows that Leeds can't really keep Ferdinand now this has happened and is playing it coy. Once Leeds give him an inch the deal will be done quickly enough and i think we will have Ferdinand at a half sensible price. ( well if you call 28-30 mill sensible) Its like a game of chess, with everyone jockeying for the best bargaining position. but the fact that Rio wants to come make the transfer inevitable IMO.

Now that Ferdinand wants to come, we're just trying to lower the price. We could rush right in and get him for the 35m that Leeds want, or we wait for a few days, maybe a week, and then offer between 28-31m.

Hopefully it works, and the money we save can be used to get Thuram or some other good CB to partner Rio. :D

Rio, Rio, Rio, who's going to Rio (actually Rio's coming to us )

Sit tight because the poker game has started to get serious........ :D

Based on Rio's agents comments about Rio bringing in the get-out clause next year(22 million get out clause).......Leeds only have one choice.....its not like they dont need the extra money.

surely Utd should bid 22.1 million as a second offer.... :D :D

feck 'em all - whatever we do bout Rio, let's get Ayala if he's available for around 10 - just a year left on his contract AND Blanc's definitely retiring nx summer

chk out this summer's transfer mkt - in a yr Rio's not gonna be worth his age in m. - let's wait n snap him up after he has a lousy season over there (as he will, Captain Unhappy!)

The question now is how long should we wait for leeds to grant Rio his wish?

Well yeah there is that. Frankly Leeds are either being total pricks or they really won't let him go.

Juve President Moggi quotes as follows:

The Bianconeri official has also rubbished speculation that Leeds midfielder Dacourt was on the verge of signing for the side.

"Dacourt is on his way to Juventus? Let’s not joke about this. Look at the players we have in our midfield and you will understand everything. We have never had any intention of signing the Frenchman".

So where's the £15m coming from? Unless they sell Ferdinand to us or Juve, they are not going to be able to pay off their debt, or keep their squad size the same.

I believe Leeds will let Rio go to any other club but us.

My gut feel is that we might as well continue pursuing our other alternative targets.

The sheep fans have to be massively demoralized to have their Captain ask for a transfer to their most bitter rivals. Can't think of a comparable parallel...possibly if Keano asked for a transfer to the dippers.

I'd like to think Keano would prefer to seek forgiveness from MM on bended knees than to do that.

Thats a problem. Rio has ambitions and he WILL move unless Leeds can improve to his level of demands (which they can't, realistically).

So he will move next summer when he has a clause for it. But will any foreign club have the money to buy him then? Does ANY club except United has the money to buy him now?

It all sounds very well, 'sell him to anyone but United', but it's not that easy to actually do. Meanwhile, Ferdinand is still playing for a club which he considers smaller and less successful.

Doesn't sound a very good solution for Leeds either.

As for the possibility of this being a saga - Leeds would have to be idiots to make a saga and then sell him. They need the money both to cover their debts and to raise money for Venables.

At the same time, we need to force their hands a bit. A bid of 20m stirrs things up nicely, but it won't get us Rio.

they'll be missing out aswell... from what i've read it seems that they want 35mil and we're willing to pay 25m.. a compromise should be reached... leaving all parties chuffed.

i hope...

Why are they being pricks?

They don't have to automatically sell him to you cos you want him

I think Rio wants to play in England and in the Champions League, and win lots of trophies. There's only one place he's going to accomplish all of that, and thats with us.

Personally, I think Leeds are hanging on for the £25m + David May bid ;)

Well, if it's Poker, Mr. Ridsdale has just blinked first.

Ridsdale revealed that Leeds have already turned down one bid from Manchester United, believed to be for £20million, for their centre-back.

He said: "We received an offer some weeks ago but that was rejected out of hand as we felt it to be derisory.

"But we are a public company, I am merely an employee and I have a duty to shareholders to maximise the value of our assets.

"If we receive any reasonable offers for any of our players, including Rio, we will consider it and debate it but that is not the position at the moment.

"He has asked to be put on the transfer list at a time when there has not been an acceptable offer and that has been rejected."

Bottom line: It's all about the money.

Robbie Keane has already demonstrated that a player doesn't have to move to a club that is not of his choice, that won't be lost on his team-mate. Though his agent was fairly open to foreign clubs.

Amir, that quote from Ridsdale sort of confirms his stance as posturing, and is inviting a higher bid, the ball is back in our court now. We better return it with say, a £25m bid.

You've just got to laugh at the sheep on SqBall:
cmac34 - well its beginning, the grimsdale backtrack, latest is he's cut short his holiday and now say's "i have a duty to our shareholders to maximise the value of our assets. if we recieve any reasonable offer for rio, we will consider it". that and Alaya's agent jetting in too. seems it was a "done deal" after all. lying slimy bastards, you cannot belive a word this toad says.

It isn't a done deal, thats plainly obvious, but we've now reached the haggling point as Leeds, like any creature with half a brain, know there's no point now in keeping Rio.

Agreed. The discussion has shifted from Rio staying to, how will Ridsdale sell him for a hefty amount, so as to save face with the fans.
