United have not been in contact with Leeds since Ridsdale rejected an offer, believed to be worth around £20m, from Reds chief executive Peter Kenyon some weeks ago.
It is understood that United will not make a new approach unless the Leeds board weaken in their resolve to keep Ferdinand.
United will continue to monitor the situation and the next move is down to Leeds or Ferdinand.
If Ferdinand digs his heels in, then Leeds may accept, however reluctantly, that they have no alternative but to let him go.
That would be the green light for United to come back with a second revised bid.
However if Leeds remain determined to make Ferdinand honour the remainder of his contract, then Sir Alex Ferguson will be forced to move on to his other defensive targets.
Strengthening his defence is Ferguson's overriding priority this summer and he cannot wait forever for Ferdinand.
