What a load of fecking rubbish.....there was an offer of £26m today and Leeds said nothing less than £30m will be even considered.

How does anybody KNOW what Fergie, Kenyon or anyone else involved has been doing.

Why does everything stop if Rio gets on a plane...it is Ridsdale doing the negotiating not Rio. kev whoever you are you are an arse.

To be perfectly fair to him - no.

He's just responsible to the 'very bad news about two players'.

Do we really want another scenario like that morning Shearer was reportedly set to fly out to United's tour?

If Leeds have not booked him on the flight they would have to be the most incompetent pricks ever. Haggling over a player and dropping such a massive hint that they will cave in.

It might be worth checking though!

If Rio plays anywhere near being worthy of all this typing he will be worth every frigging penny!

Oh well, if you said 26m then it's 26m... Frankly, only few people know and non of them use forums!

I like the quote about the new austerity in the football transfer market making Rio "feel like an Elgin Marble at a car boot sale" :D

Latest from tomorrows Guardian......

Leeds reject £29m Ferdinand bid but stay open for offers

United stand-off

Dominic Fifield
Saturday July 20, 2002
The Guardian

Manchester United were last night set to lodge a British record bid of £30m for the unsettled Rio Ferdinand as they attempted to agree a fee with Leeds before the England centre-half leaves on an 11-day club tour to the Far East and Australia.
Formal contact between the two clubs was renewed yesterday with United faxing a bid worth around £29m - some £9m higher than their original offer earlier this month - for Ferdinand, whose transfer request was dismissed by Leeds earlier this week

That offer, involving monies linked to appearances, domestic and international honours, was rejected by the Yorkshire club's chairman Peter Ridsdale, though a third bid nearer their £30m valuation was believed to be imminent.

"I have had one conversation with them - Manchester United - today but it did not move the situation on any further," confirmed Ridsdale, who remains under pressure from his club's plc board to raise funds despite rejecting United's initial £20m offer for his captain as "derisory" earlier this month. "We have still to receive a bid of a level that we would find acceptable."

United officials conceded privately that the deal could be scuppered for good if negotiations over a fee were not concluded before Ferdinand leaves the country this morning. Leeds's first-team squad were due to fly at nine o'clock from Leeds/Bradford airport, bound initially for China, and intend to include their club captain on the trip if no deal has been struck. Should Ferdinand make the tour, Sir Alex Ferguson would most likely look elsewhere as he attempts to recruit a world-class centre-half ahead of the Champions League registration deadline of August 8.

However, with talks between the Old Trafford chief executive Peter Kenyon and Ridsdale ongoing last night, United remained optimistic that Ferdinand would be omitted from the touring party to allow further talks to take place over the weekend in time for a deal to be announced by both clubs' plc boards to the stock exchange on Monday morning.

To that end Ridsdale, who had been planning on returning to a family holiday in Monaco last night, is likely to remain in West Yorkshire in the hope that United eventually raise their bid - and, significantly, the size of the fee to be made in an immediate down payment - to nearer his £30m valuation of a player he described as "the best defender in the world".

Should Ferdinand - who has made 73 appearances for Leeds since joining them from West Ham in November 2000 for a then British record £18m - complete the move, Leeds are likely to enjoy a second sudden influx of cash on Monday when Lee Bowyer is expected to complete a £9m move to Liverpool.

Talks have been ongoing all week between the midfielder's adviser David Geiss and the Anfield chief executive Rick Parry, with Bowyer keen to force up Liverpool's initial offer of a five-year contract worth around £35,000-a-week. Now, it appears, common sense and compromise have prevailed.

"I'm hoping it's going to be completed over the weekend with a view to signing on Monday," added Ridsdale. "As far as we're concerned the deal is done between the two clubs. We've given him a passport out of Leeds and wished him well."

Bowyer has not been included among the party to travel to

Officially Leeds need to raise 15m this year (although their debt is bigger). Ofcource, once they raise 15m, they need to raise more to actually sign players.

so it makes sense to cash in on Rio..whilst his stock is at its highest.

I'd sell one Rio as well as Bowyer to both raise the money I need and get money for players, rather than Bowyer and several 'fringe players'.

In today's football, having a good squad is as important as a good first-11. If Leeds stay without good backup it wouldn't really make them stronger. Just my belief.

he seems quite sure of himself and has a great following who are stuck up his arse somewhere ,
Ronaldo might sign for united but he may change his mind , remember if he signs I TOLD U HE WOULD , and if he doesn't then I TOLD U HE COULD CHANGE HIS MIND.

The blind leading the blind if u ask me.

I hope that statement is true. I'm getting bored of this will he/won't he now. Third and final bid please boys ;)

Yep, and whatever anyone says with the economic down turns hitting the leagues worldwide, Leeds will be lucky to get £20 million for him next season. The times of £46 million transfers and the like are well and truly over.

Ridsdale knows this. Utd know this. The problem is Utd can't wait. Supply and demand. That's what it all boils down to: supply and demand.

Fine. Let's toss this deal and buy some apples. It would cost less and be tasty.

Couldn't do back at the back, but who cares. It's United tradition

I know, it's not funny. It happens to people who are away at 2:27 Israel time because they're too damned worried

I liked: No spectator ever sees a player telling a referee to stick it up his bollocks without thinking to himself: "Hang on a minute - that's my job."

I know, I tried that, it didn't work.

From some reason I started thinking about Cruyff and Poborsky!

I need a break from football... Problem is all I could think of for a holiday was to jet off to England to watch United play.

I'm ruined for life :D

Exactly. feck the whole thing. Get Ayala for 8m, he will give us 3 good years and get Rio next year for 20m as the rock-solid backbone blablabla for the next 10 years. Blanc will be retiring then and Brown/O'Shea will have got enough games this year. 28m for the toughest CB pairing around, that would make more sense.

Get done with it, I AM BORED TO DEATH, THIS RIO FERDINAND THING HAS GONE COMPLETELY OTT, I CAN'T BE feckED ANYMORE!

Good thing SAF can keep his cool, man he has some nerve to put up with all this tripe.

It I was giving up I'd be sound asleep by now.

It's the fact I've not given up, yet I haven't a clue what's going to happen (and Saturday morning is very important...) that keeps me restless.

Nay, I'm not about to spend an hour posting so that we get there and then, once we reach 666 messages, seeing [Man Utd] Footballah telling us how all there is left to do is sign Nesta, Bobby Carlos, Crespo, Davids and Kleberson.

I don't think my monitor would like being banged on the floor, nor would it be able to put up with the kicking session after that.

I'm still confident that Rio will be a Red soon. Rio has prepared to leave. Leeds has also prepared for his left, and their fans won't want a captain who doesn't have the heart in their club. But because of the Cantona saga, this time Leeds think they must make sure that Rio is sold at as high price as possible -- even if that price is ridiculous. IMO the deal will still very probably go through, the questions left are only "when" and "how much".

Though I don't really believe we have jumped from a bid of 20m all the way to 29m. I think we may have rise the bid to around 25m. IMO 29m is our final limit and we will not (and should not) go over it.
