Right Winger... Who do we go for?

We should just get another right footed player and stick em on the left as well.

This, really think inverted wingers are not the Utd way. Great for counter attacking - the bad news is our MF are slow at releasing.

Please feel free to name one that has worked for utd in the last 20 years. Ronnie was more a roaming forward.

City are using sane and sterling pull a cross the LB or RB.

Today against palace you throw a blanket over our attackers all grouped.

I think what we have is more suited to 4-2-2-2 but if Mourinho is going to try 4-3-3 then he needs to address RW with a player who actually thrives there.

It seems that Alexis is not going to play as a right winger. In that case, we need to buy a RW to compete with Mata. If we play 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 he would be needed.

What we need to do is stretch the play with the way teams are parking the bus against us. All of our attackers are cutting inside, and our current LB/RB's don't make enough of a contribution offensively. With the exception of Shaw perhaps, but he isn't getting enough of a chance. I don't think our attackers are our biggest problem. Play Shaw, get a decent RB and a CM who can do more than play a lateral pass.

Mahrez would be so good. Attacking acquisitions might not be priority but we should look to do it if we can.

Yeah, he’s literally perfect to upgrade Mata on the right; pace, immense natural talent, holds width, proven in the league and in a counter-attacking system.

Bringing in Danny Rose would provide an overlap to neutralise the negatives of Sanchez/Rashford/Martial perpetually inverting on the left, so a proper right winger is imperative to add balance.

Won’t happen, mostly due to the signing of Sanchez, but I’d sell Martial and sign both Mahrez and Leon Bailey - two world class wingers who would take Jose’s United to the next level.

Theo Walcott would be a very good goal threat on the right.
Hahahaha

Mahrez is probably the one we should go for as he’s proven in the league and has shown he’s one of the best in the league full stop when motivated, I think playing for us with the players we’ve got and always in the mix for trophies would keep him constantly motivated.

Also he’s a perfect age as he’s just coming into his peak years so we wouldn’t have to wait for him to develop or adapt to the league. I think having Mahrez/Mata on the right, Sanchez/Martial on the left and Lukaku/Rashford through the middle is serious strength and quality in depth.

A lot of people have suggested Mahrez over the last couple of years.

I’m assuming we just aren’t interested in him or would have signed him by now.

If rumours are to be believed, we'll be looking to sign a midfielder, full back and maybe centre back. We'll probably overlook the right wing position once again. Lingard vs Mata for the RW position I would imagine.

Willian/Mahrez/Costa/Bailey.. any one of these guys and we will be laughing down that right flank.

I'm surprised not one top team has gone for him, They must know something we don't.

Jose's been using words like discipline and character, after Mahrez toys out of the prom nonsense in January I doubt he'd go near him. I actually doubt we'll address this issue and if we do I don't think it will be some speedster, Eriksen would be the perfect uograde to how we use Mata there.

Or they just haven’t had the funds to get him while addressing other areas - none of the big clubs barring City have a blank chequebook. He’d greatly improve every team in the top 6.

Is Bailey not a LW?

Primarily yeah, his output is much better from out there. He inverts too much to justify his signing to provide width on the right.

Mahrez holds width properly - and has played on the counter for most of his career in England; he’s perfect for Mourinho.

Could be.

Gelson Martins. We need pace on the right and a player who can cut inside and score goals.

Just chuck Sanchez there. He's not exactly ripping it up for us anywhere else.

Mahrez in the summer if that's still not working.

I asked about him a few weeks back. He's a player i've been tracking as I have him in a football game. Anyway, read below:

Has Martins hit a purple patch of form or has he finally turned a corner?

Since the start of 2018:

Minutes: 638
Goals: 2
Assists: 4
Goal or Assist Every 106mins

He's started to be more effective around goal this season but he's been tired for a few months and has been injured for a while too. We look like a completely different team when he's on the pitch but I still don't think he'll ever be good enough to start for one of the top teams in the world.

Europa League talent then? Or capable of stepping up to say a Tier 2 club in the Champions League?

It's a close fight in Liga NOS, Porto with a game in hand but could have a dip in confidence due to the Liverpool crushing.

Tier 2 club in the CL. He has to get rid of the inconsistency and improve the decision making but with top class manager perhaps he can evolve to an even better level. He showed his brilliance in games against Real Madrid and Juventus but he has to work on those issues i mentioned.

I never said that he's the complete product just yet. However he's got the skill set to do well with us. He's a natural right winger (not a left winger or a striker), he's got great technique and pace. God knows how much we need pace and trickery in the team.

If we're afraid to give kids a chance then we might as well wrap everything up and go home.

When his own fans say he's not good enough that makes me think that he's not good enough. If it was a case of buying a proven RW and then buying Martins as a backup then i'm all for it. But we need a player who is first team material not squad/potential in my opinion.

We're probably more harsh on him than rival fans would be so it's not a case of he must be crap since his own fans are pointing his faults.

If it was for 40 million I think United would be smart to buy him but for 60 million I think you could do better, for that price you'd be expecting him to be a level he's still not at. The move could be perfect for him and provide him with the sort of coaching and teammates that would help get to another level or it could have the opposite effect, players from Portugal haven't been doing too well abroad in recent years so it would be a gamble and 60 million would be too big of a bet imo.

He's not a Mourinho type player either, pretty weak physically, doesn't track back as much as he should, etc... as much as the fans are desperate for a player like him, I think they're desperate to win a title a lot more... at this point he'd bring a lot of magic into the stadium, he would lift the fans from their seats but he'd also frustrate you a lot and I don't think he'd be effective enough on a consistent basis to be starting for a team that needs to win the Premier League.

With all of that said, looking at the other players being talked about here I really don't see a clear better option.

Well one of my new mates is a porto fan and he swears he is the best young player in portugal

Mourinho would probably wreck him, mechanize his play with overlaps and defensive compensations, get rid of his street football irreverence, flair and trickery ability for the greater tactical good. Like @Peyroteo said, i don't think he's a Mourinho type of player. I also spend years reading about United's supporters frustration regarding Nani's decision making, i'm not looking forward to defending every Gelson play here. But if Gelson was to evolve and produce the type of performances like the Real Madrid away or Juventus match in a more regular basis, he would be a great transfer for any european top club.

Yet the two people I quoted are Sporting fans. I'd trust their judgement given they watch him play in every game. But no matter, your opinion. Just thought i'd quote you some opinions of Sporting fans is all because Martins isn't a well known name.

The Porto fan is probably right too, Gelson is the best young player in Portugal. The problem is there aren't a lot of good ones.

Yeah i'd also agree with that. I don't see any other youngster coming close to his level. He already has plenty of senior games, CL and NT experience in big stages.

Neville explained why Mata is still valuable in this team, we don't need another speed merchant, we need some craft added to the attack, we need a Mata upgrade.

A playmaker drifting in from the right and knitting together midfield & attack?

Fekir/Lemar/Isco?
