Right Winger... Who do we go for?

The thing with Gomes is the club have invested a lot of money in keeping him with that new contract, that's why he'll be a priority for Jose over Chong IMO.
That would be to the detriment of the club considering we're weak on the right wing.

It would also be a good way of pissing Chong off...

If we buy anyone it should be an established star in that position at their peak....that way we can also bring through Chong and he can finesse his decision making around the box which is the only weakness he has shown so far.

Weakness is probably too strong a word actually considering he has just moved into a new team setup.

Take a hit from the Chong!

Only one i'd be interested in is Pulisic as I think he'd be good for the club off and on the pitch given some time. However, if not him, then i'd rather see someone like Chong step up. I'm not sure who we could buy that wouldn't cost a bomb and would be worth our time if we are looking for someone aged and well established.

Pulisic would be my choice as well.

I don't think we'll be looking to sign anyone, but might have our hand forced if someone moves for Pulisic, as I'm sure the owners would love to have him on board eventually.

Pulisic should really stay put for a while longer though, as I don't think he's quite ready to move and Dortmund is an excellent place to develop. Hopefully he's well-advised.

I'd much rather we sign another left winger to give competition to Sanchez.

If we go into a season putting faith in Gomes and Chong to be the first choice options, we would end up like Arsenal. We should go after Griezmann if he hasn't already agreed to join Barcelona. He pretty much ticks all the boxes except for height for Jose.

He's really not great on the right. Needs to play through the middle in a 4-4-2/4-2-3-1.

And he's about as far removed as a right winger as you can get, and yes I know he started his career as a wide player

He would play on the right wing like Mata does, cutting in most of the time and playing as a second striker with Lukaku. Except he is a tier higher as a talent and has pace, goal scoring threat.

I agree, would prefer him to stay at Dortmund for a few seasons, see if he really kicks on as well before taking the plunge, as long as we don't let teams take a free run at him though i'd be happy to be honest.

Has he ever played on the right wing? I don't get where this is coming from. Yes he probably can do a job but it'll just be another expensive failed experiment.

Stop trying to shoehorn people into the team because of their name, get a proper RW who can run, whip a ball in and take on a defender. We need the RW version of Sane.

This is exactly what has gotten our squad in its current state, so couldn't agree more. We need RW, we need CM, we need FB's, so let's not buy second strikers to play RW, lets not by wingers to play FB and lets not by an attacking midfielder to be Carrick's replacement, please, we need stop with this big name recruiting regardless of need or position just because we think only the big names are gonna get us back to the top. Even smaller, yet equally as talented, names can work, we just need to work together as a team and the whole lot is uplifted.

We should just get another right footed player and stick em on the left as well.

@Adnan @Valar Morghulis

I don't think @Scholsey2004 was saying that Gomes is playing better than Chong.

What I think he is saying is Gomes is already getting recognised by Mourinho hence why he is in fa cup squads. Chong isn't getting that recognition which tells you Gomes is currently in front of Chong in terms of making the first team squad. Regardless of who had been performing better at u18 or u23.

I agree that Chong has been outperforming Gomes - maybe he will get his shot soon. I hope both can go on next season's pre season tour.
Yeah that was what I was saying. I gave up trying after a while since @Adnan clearly didn't want to hear it.

You don't know what the pecking order is when you consider Chong has only recently returned from a very serious injury and has been head and and shoulders above any thing Gomes has shown. You can speculate, but I find it very difficult to believe our best young attacker from the academy would be behind Gomes who has looked lost in the reserves since he stepped up.

It depends on what has been said to him as regards career plan, like how we've sent Axel and TFM out on loan but given McTominay games.

Axel and TFM going on loan is somewhat understandable with who they have in front of them. Personally I would've kept Axel, but unfortunately Mourinho had blown £35m on Lindelof and would've looked silly, if Axel like I believe out performed him.

I'm not normally someone who sticks my neck out regards a young player from the reserves, but Chong really does excite me as a potential main stay for the RW. Alot of potential names have been brought up in this thread from various teams for the RW. But the answer to our RW issues is currently already at the club imo...

Real Madrid will have a sale in the summer to fund their own Purchases, i would take asensio/Isco although how much do they track back, i do not know. Bale might become available and although not my first choice, is an option Jose and especially Woodward would want.

There would be Mata and Lingard in front of Chong though as well, despite what either of us might feel about their suitability to the position. I agree with Axel though, I think we should have give him more chances this season.

I honestly have no take on Chong as all I've seen are clips of him playing at U21 level and they are really hard to judge by. He does look fast and technically good though and has a wiry frame like Giggys.

Waiting for someone from the youth setup to step up and establish themselves in the first team and then play at the level we want them to, is easily 2-3 seasons away from today.

Don't understand why we did not attempt to sign Moura and Mahrez, both players would've improved us massively (especially Mahrez), we're crying for some width on the right and players with good close control and dribbling.

A couple of months ago, I posted that we needed someone on the right who will hug the touchline and stretch play. A bit like Sane for City or Son for Spurs.

Unfortunately, despite Mata doing well in the roaming role, we still haven't addressed this problem.

At the moment, we have two wingers who like to cut in, and it makes it easier for teams to defend against us, especially if our full backs are pushed back or ineffective.

We just need someone who's going to get the ball down the flank, run at the full back and whip crosses in. Not only will this be beneficial for Lukaku, who strives off crosses, but for the whole team too. It will open up more space for those in the middle, thus giving them more time on the ball.

When we bought Alexis, I thought Mourinho was going to use him, not necessarily as an out and out winger, but someone who could, both keep the width and cut inside deepening on the game. A bit like he used Willian.

Unfortunately, Mourinho hasn't done this, and we're left scratching our heads about who we're going to have as our long term right winger.

Not sure why he doesn't try Sanchez on the right. I mean, he's tried Martial there. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, but at least try it.

Yeah me too, which makes me question why we bothered to sign him. Seems pointless.

I agree. The way Jose is looking at it, though, is that he was a free transfer, who has world class talent and is better than Martial on the left at the moment.

God knows why he hasn't tried Sanchez on the right yet, though.

Alexis is near the 30s, so I wouldnt sign Bale (even he is a good player). I prefer a young player like Pulisic, Bailey, etc.
Also, Griezmann/Dybala are second strikers, more than right wingers, so they are not necessary unless Alexis starts playing on the right and excels in that position.

Mahrez would be ideal I think it's just that he doesn't track back that maybe Mou does not like. Can see us letting Martial go and buying a proper right sided player it makes no sense to keep all the young left winners.

In the world cup, we are going to see new stars... Maybe one of them could be our future right winger.

Maybe we should focus on a system with 2 strikers and no wingers as we already have Lukaku, Martial, Rashford, Lingard and Alexis who all prefers being in the centre and drift from there.

The likes of Mahrez, Malcom and Thauvin are all gambles, no guarantee that they will come in and strenghten us right away. I wouldn’t touch Bale with the fee and wages he is on, even though it’s tempting.

Fekir is my first choice. Creative, scores goals, also has good strength and balance, he would not be bullied by PL defenders.
