Right Winger... Who do we go for?

And who will be the right winger?
Weirdly I was thinking about this today and I do wonder if Dybala was purchased, I suppose he could operate the same way we use Mata. Starting point is the right but tending to end up more in central areas. I’d rather it was a 433 than the 4231 tho.
Dybala does tend to naturally drift more right or operate in that sort of area but a fear would be that he and Sanchez both like to operate quite narrowly so we’d lose that width unless we start to use fullbacks more offensively and get some that can do something in the final 3rd.

I'll do it. I need to sign a contract sharpish though so i can get training because right now walking for 90 minutes would tire me out, let alone running.

Also on the plus side i read the cafe, so i'll be able to improve my performances to perfection by reading the match day thread and the players performance thread.

Mahrez would have been a better signing than Sanchez (and that is even with the belief that he will eventually come good)

Nah, I don't think that would be the case. Mourinho hit the nail on the head by hijacking Sanchez signing than going for Mahrez.

Although Mahrez was more of a fit for the right wing problem we face in terms of skill, creativity and quality in final third and balance, Mourinho has largely ignored him because of what he does when the team does not have the ball. Mourinho's tactics need fighters on the pitch who can press, drop deep and defend when the team does not have the ball for large periods of the game when playing against sides who hold the ball for longer periods and us having to chase down the ball. He also needs a leader on the pitch who can rally a team going forward when the chips are down and fight to win back the ball and shows character and brings his never say die attitude on the pitch when facing tough times, something which we saw from Sanchez during the Manchester derby in the second half.

A player like Mahrez can easily get De motivated to press and defend for larger periods of the game when chasing the ball as Mourinho spends large time without the ball and wants to hit with pace and efficiency on the counter-attack. Mahrez does not have those strengths. Sanchez attitude to press and defend without the ball is phenomenal and he does work hard for the manager when asked to do a specific job by a manager like Mourinho.

Sanchez's Mentality will rub on this team going forward which ironically didn't happen in Sevilla game but Sanchez was still bedding in a new team during that time and still is, but the effect is already started to bear fruit when the service Lukaku is getting with him is much more than he was getting under Rashford or Martial and thus he is back amongst the goals as well. Also, it was important to stop him signing for Man city as he would have improved them way more and made life difficult for us to catch them next season which the fans won't accept from Mourinho.

As far as the balance is concerned, Yes it has been largely counterproductive when it destabilises Martial and Rashford in the team and reduced their game time and development but its solely down to Mourinho's stubbornness in his methods that he is not willing to integrate Sanchez on the right, or play a system where all of them can play together or have more game time, something like a 4312 can give game time to everyone and play players on their strengths.

For me ,The way our squad is built and the system preferences Mourinho likes to set up it would be wise to get a faster attacking playmaker like fekir who can play as a 8,10,or the right wing and is an upgrade on Mata and lingard and can secure the ball in high pressure and also counter-attack and contribute in defending who can fill up in various systems in 4231,attacking 433 as a 8 or right wing just like Isco contributes in Madrid team on the right wing.

Dybala is not a winger for sure. To waste him in the wing marking a full back is criminal. He is a SS. If we were in those 4-4-2 times he would be fighting for the Balon D'or.

Matas not a winger either though is he? I don't think Jose wants two wingers, I think he wants a winger on the left and an inside right on the other side who'll get more involved in the midfield.

We spend the summer convincing Sanchez and training him to play on right.

He has played on the right quite a lot in his career, and Wenger even credited playing him there with reviving his form following a prolonged dip in performance in 2015/16 (see interviews below):

He is much sharper, he is much more electric in his dribbling and much more confident. He scores goals again. I still believe on the right side he is much more clinical, since he has come back into this position he scores more goals.

He looks to me to be more comfortable in his movement, especially in his movement in behind. When he plays on the left, he likes to drift in then come back. When he plays on the right, his runs in behind the defenders are better.

It was good to see Alexis Sanchez score again last weekend. Most of the time it’s with the efficiency of his performances that you know the he is back to his best. He’s a striker who can have an impact on the game and since he’s come back on the right, I think he is more efficient. It is more natural for him than on the left. His game is a bit more predictable on the left. On the right he is unpredictable because he can go outside and inside. On the left he looks always to come inside and that’s easier to block.

As much as I feel like we don't have an out and out right winger, I'm starting to believe that having an overlapping right back that can deliver accurate crosses might be a better solution.

Or both

Bale is looking a player to avoid, even if he might be considered more of a striker these days.

Yes he is (or was) always at his best playing through the middle. His career at the top level looks to be over though.

He tried to turn himself into Ronaldo but a lesser version can not exist in the same team. He needs a move, goes to another team where he can be the main man and he could still be excellent but his game is narrower than it used to be, can't remember the last time I saw him on one of those surging runs.

Here's an idea why not just start now and tell martial to train as a right winger. Develop his game to fit our tactile system from the right. Play him...allow him to have a bad day or two while he develops then problem solved for free.

And before people say "he can't play on the right" that's nonsense. He's a technically gifted footballer who's young. He can be developed there he just needs to get sold on the idea and work at it.

It would also provide us with some much needed penetration as an orthodox wide man (I.e. right footed playing on the right) is more inclined not to want to cut back infield as the 'inverted wide men' do.

After watching Real - Juventus I want Douglas Costa. He may not be Messi and he isn't always consistent but he would give the team the perfect balance we need on the right wing. Fast, direct and the PL suits his explosive style. He can dribble, cross and I think we need someone like that. We've signed so many household names but they've failed to live up to expectations so why not try for someone less popular but gives the team the balance it needs? Who wanted Salah last summer? Liverpool took a chance and are reaping the rewards. There are plenty of players out there that can do well in a different environment but have yet to be given a chance.

Something tells me Mourinho has at least attempted this in training and it didn't work out.

At least I hope so

Mahrez.

He’s still got to prove it at a top club and he’ll bring a style of creativity we sorely lack in our forward players (although Sanchez is definitely a creator in part).

Was going to invite you for a weeks trial but since you’re now quoting yourself I’ll move on.

This this and this again. Imagine the difference just replacing Mata with Mahrez in the starting 11 would make. Then get attacking fullbacks either flank or a left if transfers kitty not big enough and a midfielder.

We don't need dybala....we need an actual right winger.
If we are going to take someone from Juve it should be Douglas Costa.
Mahrez is available too.

Based on what? It seems to me the only reasoning for wanting this true winger is "just 'cause." Mata has been playing on the right for five seasons now; doesn't that mean that the management see him as a false right winger now, that they're happy with that type of player in that position?

He has played well there and in a lot of the games an actual winger would have been worse for us. Take the Swansea game: Mata moved into the centre to match Clucas' movement towards the centre and their wingback was passed onto Valencia. This gave us a 4v3 in midfield and that helped us a lot for Sanchez's goal. An actual winger, for all his skilfulness, would have been less effective.

And? Our attack has been shambles in the last 5 years if anything. Mata is not good enough to start on the right in a title winning team. We do need an actual right winger, or if we do play a false right winger, we need someone who is better than Mata.

You’ve just stated how useful Mata was not playing on the right wing.

You seem to have gone from Mata is not good enough therefore we need an actual right winger. It doesn't follow. If your point is that we just need a better false right winger then what I said is no different to what you're saying: my point was that people have little basis for saying we can't play someone on the right who wants to move into the middle. I think they just want a touchline-hugger because that's what they are used to.

You’ve just stated how useful Mata was not playing on the right wing.
I stated how useful he was coming in off the right and overloading the centre. Him being the ten and e.g. Gelson Martins playing on the right wouldn't have given us the same advantage.

I just further explained in the same comment that you quoted you just ignored it. Mata is not good enough to start there. And I prefer we replace him with an actual right winger who would offer something different to what we have on the left. But since those type of players are rare nowadays, if we do stick with playing a right sided false winger, it should be a much better player than Mata. Bernardo at City is one of those players that could have played that role for us for example

I wasn't defending Mata. The person I originally quoted said we shouldn't go for Dybala because we need an actual right winger. So if you don't think we need an out and out winger we are not in disagreement.

And how has our attack looked the last few years?

If you seriously believe we don't need a right winger then all I have to say is you are entitled to your opinion.

If Martial leaves then maybe Bale on a loan similar to James to Bayern perhaps.
Let’s not fool ourselves that he is finished. His performances on the international stage is still high quality. It could be another Robben at Madrid situation.

Herrera Matic Pogba
Bale Lukaku Sanchez

Rashford,Mata and Lingard as cover for the 3 attacking positions.

Agree with that, also think we should combine this with the purchase of Bale assuming he's relatively cheap, which will either see us pick up a world-class right winger that Martial can learn off or give Martial plenty of game time so he signs his new contract (ideally lots of rotation will give us the best of both worlds). If they're both too good Bale can move centrally.

Or we could have told Alexis he should play on the right, and switch flanks with Martial during the game like every team does.
