"It's like..."
Richard Dunne
Who? Kolo Toure? Andy O'Brien?
Is he Vidic with pace because they both tend to collect red cards?
He's 6'5.
The little guy, whatshisface, Smalling is it.
With all due respect comparing Smalling to Dunne at this stage is like comparing Nani to Cristiano Ronaldo.
On a serious note Thomas Dunne would make my team of the year I'd have put him with Thomas Vermaelen, but I think Terry will probably nudge into the back four particular if Vermaelen is out for a sustained spell.
With all due respect comparing Smalling to Dunne at this stage is like comparing Nani to Cristiano Ronaldo.
It really isn't.
Nani is a good player whereas Cristiano is world class, Dunne is merely a good player as opposed Smalling who is unproven at this level.
The step up from good player to world class is a huge one, the step up from unproven to good is alot less steep.
So now you're comparing Nani to... Dunne?
No mate, you need to learn to read. Allow me to simplify it for you.
You compared Nani and Ronaldo and likened that to comparing Dunne and Smalling, Iam telling you that there is a big difference between comparing a world class player(Ronaldo) to a Good player(Nani) and comparing a Good player(dunne) to a unproven one in Smalling.
In other words Cristiano is streets ahead of Nani whereas Dunne is clearly better than Smalling but not by the same margin.
You think Smalling could reach Dunne's level in one season then?
No seeing as a young player does not become proven at premiership level over the space of a season. I would say that if Smalling could hold a place in our starting lineup for 2 seasons or so then he should be somewhere near Dunne's level. However I'm not expecting that to happen for quite sometime and that wasn't my point.

You've REALLY got a issues over the Smalling signing, haven't you?
With all due respect comparing Smalling to Dunne at this stage is like comparing Nani to Cristiano Ronaldo.
How? Dunne is "old", Smalling is "young." Nani and Ronaldo are a couple years a part. More like comparing Nani to Giggs. The real difference is experience.
Rio, Vidic, Vermaelen, Kompany, Terry, Carvalho. They are the benchmark.
Dunne is twice the player they are

Evans?a young player does not become proven at premiership level over the space of a season.
Vidic?how the feck did wenger get a class 24 year old CB with superb pace for 10 million euro?
Moreso with Vidic going, he's "Dunne minus pace" after all!
how the feck did wenger get a class 24 year old CB with superb pace for 10 million euro? i like the potential of smalling however. (hope he makes us forget about ever having pique on our books).
i forgot about pique. and i dont miss him.
now when we have evans and we know what is he capable of, i cant think of a better cb at his age.
I don't think there's enough between Pique and Evans to say who's better.
'twill be a great matchup between the Villa defence and Rooney.
Pique was never gona make it at United. Listening to him speak about his time with us he was always gona leave. A Barca lad through and through. Speaks very highly about United though.
Both players are arguably the most promising centre halfs around at the moment.
He'll find them a completely different proposition to Arsenal's short-arses, that's for sure.
Anyone else notice that he took advantage of Gallas' shitness in the air by hanging out on his side of the pitch? There's no such obvious aerial weak link in Collins and Dunne.
Nearly as great as squeezing the word 'parsimonious' into this thread.
