Richard Dunne...

Pique never convinced in a United shirt, whereas Evans took his chance when it came my way.

I've been surprised at how well he's done at Barca - but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that his performance has been inflated by being in an absolutely exceptional side. Good player, though.

I always thought he was a bit too slow and pondersome to really make a big impression in our side.

I dont think that is a fair comment on Pique. He always played extremely well, making only 1 error that led to a goal. In fact, he scored a few goals 2-3 for United in only a handful of games, showed good range of passing. However his positioning and pace was not very good.

In fairness, I know he didn't feature a great deal. But when he did, I don't think he pulled up any trees. He certainly didn't make the same impression that Evans did when given the chance.

The bit in bold sums up my feelings on him. A defender with questionable pace and positioning, is by my definition, not a particularly effective defender.

Spain suits his game - they like the way he brings the ball out from the back, which is one facet where I think Evans could improve his game.

If it has to be a choice between Evans and Pique, then from what I've seen, I'd say we got the better player to stay with us.

As Im currently pissed Im gona take a moment and appreciate to my mind the real Irish Captain. Easily one of the signings of the season and based on current form one of best defenders in england.

As a player and a captain hes a massive loss to City. As a centre half in terms of bravery I think he's as good as it gets. A leader whos development over the years has been remarkable. From humble beginings at home farm, his formative years at Everton winning a youth cup and his subsquent development at Man City. Their player of the year 4 times in 8 years tells its own story.

Under Hughes Dunne he suffered somewhat, his last 18 months were very underwhelminging. Not a big fan of O Neill personally but his faith in him has been richly rewarded.

Yep, he is the real Irish captain.

It was an awful mistake by City to let Dunne leave. Aston Villa are seriously reaping the rewards. Extremely good defender.

Villa has the tightest defense in the league this season, 18 goals conceded (United and Chelsea 2nd with 20 each). Last season they conceded 48.

He is a very good defender. Solid, quick to intercept the ball from the air and sliding on the grass.

He has some point which make him similar to Vidic. For example the header factor. But I still believe Vidic (not this season of course) is a better defender. With more capacity of anticipation and more resources to earn the ball.
Both are strong and have an indomitable soul. The perfect partner to an intelligent footballer who plays as a defender, for example, our own Rio.

Dunne and Vidic = Physically strong defenders.
Rio Ferdinandi = Mentally strong defender.

Dunne is one of the most underrated defenders around. Apart from one bad season, he has been one of the most consistent defenders the Premiership has seen over the last decade. Delighted he got out of Shitty.

I've had Dunne in my fantasy team all season. Long story short, I would.

Nice to see he's doing great for Villa, after the way Citeh treated him an all and got some of his revenge when he scored against them.

I reckon he is a shoe in to get into the team of the season.

It's ironic when you see how much a shambles the City defence this season, much of it are caused by the lack of leadership and organization. Something that Dunne have in abundance.

Quite ironic. Funny also how some of their better players were on their own books & people like Garry Cook/Hughes assumed that they couldn't do a job. Dunne is a prime example, Stephen Ireland is another, and possibly Elano (However it could be argued that his trouble making was better off out of the club). If both (Dunne/Ireland) had full roles in City's side this season they'd be coasting in for 4th place dare i say it.

Villa are having the last laugh though, a competent centre back who has given their back 4 some organisation & all for £6m. Bargain.

Dunne was class for them for years apart from one average season. Sure how many times was he their player of the year?

If City had of kept Dunne and played their best players all season rather than their "superstars" at every opportunity, I agree, they'd easily be in 4th position.

Dunne and Collins fall out with Villa backroom staff on a team bonding day of all things.

Looks like they could both be on their way in the summer.

A lot of rumours from Birmingham seem to suggest drink has become an issue for Dunne again. I don't know whether there's any truth in it but apparently the Villa forums are stating that as fact.

At the time, Richards looked top drawer, and he's starting to show the same kind of form of again as of late.

You can take the lad out of Ireland...

Do you still feel he was a 'magnificent defender' in 2008?

Yes, very impressive player. Has had growing pains learning his trade as any young defender goes through, I acknowledged as much at the time. That he remains in the City side despite all the cash influx and coming and goings says something. If we didn't have Rafael and he wasn't a City player, I'd be delighted to see us snap up such a player

I'd say he's more like a magnificent athlete, and with time might become a magnificent defender.

The weaknesses in his game, as such, stop him from meriting the term in my opinion - he's an athlete first and a footballer/defender second...

Federer's serve syndrome aint it, everyone will always notice how strong and athletic he is, other facets of his game won't get the attention they deserve perhaps

He's not the finished article, but he's already a bloody good player. If City hadn't found money I wouldn't have been surprised to see him at a top club by now

I don't think so - Federer is the exact opposite to Micah Richards in the context we're talking about. In terms of pure talent, he's the most naturally gifted tennis player ever and has honed his physique to support his talent. I'd say Richards is the other way round - naturally a good athlete who is on his way to turning it all into being a good footballer.

The countless smokes probably don't do great things for his fitness either.

When he first arrived on the scene I thought he might be worth a punt as a CB but he's basically the new Titus Bramble.

I remember he was awesome the game we played against City in our double-winning season a few years back

I always hated seeing his name on the opposing team sheet, the game raising bastard...he is no Friedel mind you, but he is not far off

He's been shockingly bad this season, but on form he's better than all of Lierpool's centre halves bar Carragher.

Still performs for Ireland in a poor defence which contains the might Kevin Kilbane, so the qualities are quite clearly there.
