I for one I'm not for this transfer at all. While I agree that if the scouts see anything at all, it's something that will come to fruition in a couple of years time. Right now, he is just over hyped but I guess the hype is on the potential which is fair enough. In any case, if we are paying for potential, €60m or so is way too steep after less than a season of football in a relatively lower league.

Welcome to Ed's world, I guess.
1. Woody every transfer window: we have unlimited transfer fund
2. Selling clubs: proceed to mark up the player few times
3. Buying clubs: looking at United outlet sale for 30% or more mark off.
4. Rinse and repeat next window.

This is crazy. His career is barely 6 months old. How about a full season or two before getting mugged off?
The major problem with that is if he continues to improve pretty much every big team in Europe will be after him in a year or two and we would likely lose out on him. It was the same with Martial. There was loads of talk that the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid were going to make a move for him this summer. If we didn't sign him last summer we probably wouldn't have gotten him at all. If we don't gamble on Sanches now then we will probably never get him. It's now or never basically. Waiting isn't an option if we really want him. He's very highly rated for a reason and I trust our scouts considering they've watched him play far more than anyone on here.

Bebe says hello, as well.
Bebe is a shit example. He was clearly nowhere near the level required and was more of a sweetener to please Mendes.

He was physically able, but apart from being able to smash the ball like the Hulk, lacked anywhere near the type of technique needed at the top level.

A new Brazilian has enchanted Manchester United. The Brazilian in discussion is Renato Sanches, Benfica’s midfielder is commonly hailed as the next big thing in Portugal. He has convinced the world football panorama through his performances and scoring important goals such as that against Bayern in the Champions League. The Red Devils are ready to invest as much as 60 million in the youngster born in 1997 that they will pay in installments throughout four years. It’s still much too early to say that anything is official but at Carrington everyone is feeling very optimistic towards the signing of the young Brazilian. The player has been followed intensely by the scouts and supervisory board and has convinced everyone, including Sir Alex Ferguson. Although not yet official it’s very possible that Sanches’s next home might just be at Old Trafford.

Brazillian?
No he was born in Lisbon

Do we think this is a Mourinho signing? If it is he might be trying to delete the feeling that he doesn't trust youth bearing in mind Renato hasn't played a lot of professional games.

I have doubts about him, william carvalho who is a similar player and was watched by us has gone under the radar now. he got like 4 back ti back player of months award in portugal. We along with most clubs cooled our interest since. I dont know why we have not followed him up may be scouts think renato will have a level above him.

We've been scouting Sanches since last year. Had a bid rejected early this year. Think LVG wants him too.

William is a different player. A pure DM.

If he was any good City would be after him.
I am not sure guardiola is "free" to do 2 jobs at the same time. I am sure pelligrini wont have any say in city's transfer plans. I expect city to be a little late to the transfer party.

I guess some people won't remember the 'if nobody else is interested he can't be any good' gem from a few years ago. I can't even remember who it was about now, but it's funny that it can still be taken seriously :)

Pep seems to think quite highly of him.
This was after the first leg

I was excited about unknown Martial but this guy I'm not sure about from what I've seen. Lets just hope it was the same scout that was on Martial that has scouted him all those 22 times.

He's good but clearly he's no Ekangamene who'd have been available for 1/100th the price tag and is more talented. Our scouts are shit.

Manchester United's £46m target Renato Sanches is the 'young Portuguese with most potential since Cristiano Ronaldo'
Manchester United are stepping up their pursuit of Benfica teenager Renato Sanches following reported interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Here, Sportsmail gets the full lowdown on the midfield prodigy from Diario de Noticias football writer Goncalo Lopes.

The question on everyone's lips at the moment is: can Renato Sanches play for a team such as Manchester United? And the answer is yes, no doubt about it.

I believe we are talking about a young Portuguese starlet with the most potential since Cristiano Ronaldo. However, it is necessary to know how he will exploit all of his qualities.

It is too early to say whether he is worth £46.6million, of course, that nobody knows. But he is worth the risk. Who knew Anthony Martial would be worth what Manchester United paid for him last summer?

SO WHO IS RENATO SANCHES?
Renato Sanches has 42 international caps to his name at youth level but is yet to make a senior appearance for Portugal's national team.

After impressing for Benfica B, Sanches was promoted to the first-team set up at the start of this season.

Sanches signed a contract which will see him stay at Benfica until 2021 unless his buyout clause (nearly £60million) is met.

He has been compared to Edgar Davids due to his hairstyle and creativity in midfield.

Of Sanches, we are talking about a young man of 18 who has changed a team such as Benfica and influences the entire game. A player similar to Clarence Seedorf at his best, with the former Dutch player in fact being his idol.

The pressure of the £46m he could cost will not, therefore, be a problem for him. If at the age of 18 he can already deal with racist taunts, like in Benfica's last game, the value of his transfer will not be an issue.

I think Manchester United needs a new Michael Carrick to solve the midfield problems and that's where Sanches could come in. He's capable of playing either just in front of the back four or in a more advanced role, being the perfect complement to a player such as Morgan Schneiderlin.

The Benfica player stands out as being an incredible box-to-box midfielder, quite skillful, with undeniable technical and tactical ability, combining this with fantastic physicality.

He feels very comfortable setting the pace of his team, he plays in a very intense way, is very confident, and above all things he already plays like a veteran. And he likes, and knows, how to score goals!

Since he arrived in the Benfica first team, last November, he has kept his place in coach Rui Vitoria's line-up. And you can see his importance in only five months, because Benfica were eight points behind Sporting Lisbon at that time, but with Sanches in the side they now top the Portuguese league and excelled in the Champions League, being narrowly beaten in the quarter-finals by the mighty Bayern Munich.

Sanches would be the perfect midfield partner to Morgan Schneiderlin and could replace Michael Carrick

Of course it would be better for him to stay another year in Benfica and in Portugal. In my opinion, that would be best for his development. I have no doubt that if he heads to England next summer his level will evolve, but Manchester United's staff and even their fans have to realise that Sanches is not yet the finished product, he still has his flaws, like any typical 18-year-old player.

And I believe that with another season in Portugal weaknesses such as a lack of concentration at times during games and even overconfidence that leads to a few loose passes could be more easily rectified.

But I understand, however, the urgency of a club such as Manchester United to sign him right now, especially because there are other great clubs such as PSG and even Real Madrid who are also very interested.

Frankly haven't been that impressed from what I have seen which is little admittedly. How does he compare with a William carvalho who was the hype last summer?

Was April around the time the Memphis deal was announced ? I can't quite remember.

A lot of our fans were throwing that at Glaston when they digned Tarabt & Kevin Prince Boateng
