So I've watched him for 12 minutes and my mind is made up. Get him signed.

Him and Jonas has been the standout players in the first half, played some nice balls over the Setubal defense to create some goalscoring chances and has been dictating the tempo of the game very nicely so far.

All of Portugal saying this is a done deal. Please let this be the case.

He's been a luxury spectator the whole match, except for the first 10 minutes when he made a pair of good passes without any kind of pressure on him. The rest, zero again.

V. Setubal is a joke, they have been 10 matches without winning a single one, and he's been incapable of doing anything against this pub team. His two only contributions during the second half (because nobody talks about it now, and the thread is deserted suspiciously) created two counter-attacks against his team. The first one after a poor touch (surprise surprise) and the second one after an awful pass, when he had a lot of space.

Then he will do some good action against a total nobody and his agent, family and friends will be over this thread again telling us how fantastic he is, and we should sign him now at any cost. Sorry if I take the piss but it's funny how people on their forums think he's not doing enough, and he's immature to play for Benfica in their Mickey Mouse league, while people here is always impressed and want him to play now for Manchester United in the Premier League. Seriously, stop this joke mates.

Eagerly waiting for the meltdown if we sign him.

Calling the Portuguese league a Mickey Mouse league is a little bit rich. Benfica is very good team who did well against Bayern, one of the best teams in the world. I'm not sure we are better then them at the moment.

I have seen this young boy several times and he's has some unique qualities. Only eighteen and strong as an ox, superb acceleration, good stamina and a calm temper. His ball control isn't perfect, sometimes his passing in sloppy but I don't expect such a young player to be perfect all the time.

There are plenty of room for improvement in many areas but the raw talent is there to see. One poster compared him to a young Ando but with more speed. I think that's fair to say.

Its difficult to predict a young players future but his physical attributes will take him a long way in his career.

When I criticize the league I don't doubt about the quality of Benfica, Porto, Sporting and even Braga if you want. But the rest are associations of single against married. If he's not consistent in any aspect of the game there, it's silly to sign him now to solve our problems, especially paying a fortune. I don't doubt about his potential and raw materials but he needs to remain there for one more year at least.

He's not ready for that challenge and we need a better perspective to evaluate him, that's my point along this thread. What I criticize is the silly fanaticism around him, when even his own fans are saying he's lost on the field. But then I come to this place and I have to read that he was his standout player and he dictated the tempo. Amazing.

The 2nd half was fairly dead apart from the late scare for Benfica (poor Arnorld :() but I thought Sanches used the ball really well in the first half.

I thought he was Benfica's best player last night although they didn't have a good game and everyone was playing below their regular level. Especially in the first half he was good. I think he looked a little tired in the second half which would be understandable since this was his 5th full 90 minutes game in the last 18 days.

Well, at least he wont be a knee jerk signing like that horrible Martial was.

I hope we have a scout watching Neves as well - I cant help but think he is going to be a gem of a player
I'm actually looking forward to seeing portugal in the Euros... Im not sure how many of this lot will start but imagine a midfield / forward line of
..................Carvahlo.................
........Neves..............Sanches......
Silva...........Ronaldo..............Guedes

We would literally be linked with half the team every time they had a good game

You do realize you are talking about an 18 year old kid, wise up!

I would love to know who we were scouting at the start of the season. The rumor says Guedes but is there someone else, maybe Lindelof?.
Guedes for sure. Lindelöf only broke into the first team at the start of this year.

sounds like Anderson when he first joined

It'd be hilarious now if this signing doesn't work considering the number of time we've scouted Benfica this season.

Most our midfield signings dont work out. At least we're consistent.

I've seen nothing of this guy at all but I've decided he's gonna be amazing.

Actually, no, shit, he's gonna be shit.

Based on the amount of stories over the years I think we have a scout assigned full time to stalk Gaitan

 I don't think that it's just for Sanches, we have a scout regularly watching Schalke too. In my opinion the scouting thing is just a trick from the journos they just want to be vindicated, clubs like United are scouting players all the time.

Stamina was Anderson weakest point in his first season. He's nothing like Anderson of Portuguese league.

And Anderson was a #10, almost second striker. To me he looks like Enzo Perez when he is played in CM.

I think one of our scouts is just a Benfica fan, and he keeps going "well...I'm not sure, I think I need another game to really decide on whether we should go for him or not."

We watched him again this week, maybe we dont think neves is good enough? Or maybe the club wont sell neves while other two are attainable and are mendes clients?

Portuguese clubs actually release a list of scouts attending games every match. Thats why its easier to track and report.

We are kinda gambling on him turning good rather than waiting for him to confirm it. If we dont tie up a deal now and let him go and have a good Euros, we will invite a bidding war. Had Martial stayed at Monado this season, we would have probably had to pay more or have had so much competition for his signature this summer. Madrid would have probably got James Rodriguez for 20-30m less if they tied up that deal before the world cup.

possibly - I think at the right price Neves will go though I am sure his club would like to keep him for as long as possible.
strikes me that he would be a great fit for a Barca or city now pep is going there as he is primarily a deep midfielder but has phenomenal range of passing and would be great in a possession orientated team - a bit like a Busquets or even a young Guardiola (throw in a bit of pirlo as well because a just rate this kids passing that highly - admittedly I dont see that many of his club games but what I have he has always played well).
I certainly don't think we could get Neves this summer if we were not in the CL

That's precisely my point, he's 18 and doesn't seem ready to add nothing here with some consistency, if he can't do it against a group of friends. I don't know what's your opinion about him, in fact I don't know if you actually have one because all you say along this thread is "I'm not a scout", "my ass is not a scout" and similar things. But if you spent some time watching him you would realize that he's not reliable at anything, the kid is just a lottery and he's not evolving during these months, in fact his level of performances is getting worse every time.

He's relying everything on his attitude (excellent, to be fair) and physical attributes, and when he doesn't have this energy he's a total mess. He lacks too many things to think about a big move now, and I'm sure a transfer now would be counterproductive both for the player and us. We need someone more reliable, even if he's young, and he needs to keep playing and learning even most of the basic things.

It's loyal from you to support the club and his decisions blindly (if that's the case), but this is a football forum and not the fan club of One Direction, or some religious association. If you support this signing for any reason then it's perfect for me, I won't even try to convince you. But at least respect the doubts some of us have about it, because there's enough reasons to think it twice.

When Ando first arrived to us he was a number 10 but SAF tried to convert him to a b2b mf. He was strong as an ox but with a poor stamina. His attributes was his powerful acceleration and that he sometimes delivered some killer passes, remember the one to Tevez. Unfortunately his career was hampered with injuries but the talent was there to see. I think that Fergie did a mistake with Ando by converting him to play more defensive when his natural instinct was to attack.

Sanches have similar attributes but is more of a b2b player but with much better stamina. He's only eighteen but with the right guidance he can be a hell of player. If Jordan Henderson can be very useful for Pool with his poor technique then this boy don't have to worry.

Early days but for £25-35m he's worth the fuss.

We can do this with every young player in the world, and then light a candle and pray so they become great ones. These big gambles are done when there's something solid, and the player you sign is ready to perform from the start and be consistent in some aspects, even with all his flaws. People compares it with Martial every time but he was playing very well before, his maturity and composure were from other world.

People here expects we make big gambles with young players and we always win the prize, but that's hardly the rule and in this case we are choosing the wrong numbers in my opinion, or the wrong moment at least. Because I doubt Real, Barca who can sign every player in the world, are going to get crazy with a player like Renato at this moment with his current pros and cons, and 5 months of dubious evolution.

I don't think there's any risk in that sense, but even if they signed him it doesn't mean he's going to be a success or it's the end of the world for us. They signed Rodriguez and presented him like the second coming of Jesus, and now they want to kick his ass after a pair of years. Football is complex and everything can happen, but it's easier that things go well if decisions are made based on logic instead of fear, caprice or desperation.

For us to spend 25-35 mill on an 18 year old CM, he's gotta be having a spectacular season. Delli Alli like. CM is tough, even more so in the premier league.

Are you pleased that we didn't do this with Alli? After all he shone against us in that lamentable performance against MK Dons but somehow we didn't even consider a bid.

Alli was available at less than 10m while Sanches is touted at 40m. So obviously it's disappointing to miss on Alli, he was a reasonable gamble like Powell and that's the type of gamble we should take every year, now 40m is not gamble money that's confirmed player money.
I see Sanches potential and no one can say that he can't make it but I also saw M'Vila's potential and I'm glad that no one paid 40m for him.

Would be hilarious if we bought a ticket to the final game at Bournemouth and sent it to Gaitan.....just to REALLY start the rumours.

I think people have got to realise that the market price for players has exploded in the last few years. What would once cost you £5 million 3 yeras ago is closer to £35 million now and that's just the reality. Yes there are still some gems but we have to get in our heads that for £30 million pound players are no longer superstars.

Dele Alli moved this season, Vidal moved for less, Kondogbia moved for less, Mendy moved for less, Darder moved for less, Schneiderlin moved for less, there isn't a single center midfielder who moved for that price in the last two years, so no it has nothing to do with the market inflation that's an extremely poor argument when there isn't a single example available.

Madrid paid less for Kovacic, who was Inter wonder boy.
