Renato Sanches

You are against signing kante who has had one good season but want to sign a kid who has had half a season in total?

It really doesn't make any sense and the most disturbing part is the fact they keep talking about the best up and coming talents but this strategy is only good if you don't pay superstar money.

When I call him a defensive/supportive player I don't mean he's necessarily a holding midfielder. I consider Matuidi and Khedira defensive players, even if they move all around the field and get into the box sometimes. But their offensive contribution is just supportive, normally they play it simple and remain on a second plane. Their task is mainly physical and protective, more about covering space, to be prepared after a ball loss to put immediate pressure and some other things.

Renato is young and can develop in every sense but by the moment I can't see him as a complete player. Benfica is giving him room to express and see how he responds in every way, and the kid is trying a lot of different things. But I'm not sold with his overall skills, and I think his guarantee now is just his physical attributes and great mentality and work rate. He's not consistent and reliable in any other aspect.

I'd try to sign him anyway if Benfica was reasonable at setting the price, I don't deny he's an interesting prospect. But I wouldn't make a big bet here, when all we need is some energy and muscle to dynamize our apathetic midfield.

We can try to find a future star for midfield, but in that case we should pay attention to more technical players, the ones who control games like Modric or Xavi. Every player can make good isolated actions and get a clip on youtube, but not too many can dictate the tempo and lead their teams as a constant, with intelligence and precision. If we found a young player with that profile I'd even pay money from my pocket. Unfortunately the people at our club go to the beach and don't find the water.
Signing him doesn't stop us identifying and signing the 'orchestra director' you mention. In fact having an Essien type can be complementary to those players.
My own reservations are mainly centered on the price and if we can get it down to £25m + add ons I will be comfortable with the deal.

Man of the match performance from him in the game tonight, especially in the second half he was fantastic and was dictating the game from midfield.
The fact that this was his third 90 minutes game in 8 days doesn't make it any less impressive.

Is the game over? I was looking for it on BT's channels but there's only Sporting's game.

Must have been an early kick off, was he playing deeper without the driving runs, again?
He started in a midfield 2 alongside Samaris and played something of a box to box role in the first half. Academica parked the bus after their early goal so whenever he tried to run forward with the ball he was basically facing a wall of opposition players and had to stop and pass it sideways or backwards. In the second half he took a step back and was playing more like a sitting playmaker and this is when he really took over the game, in the last 35-40 minutes there couldn't have been many Benfica attacks that didn't start with a pass from him, he was like a one man midfield connecting the defense with the attack by himself.

Sounds impressive, It does feel a bit like he's gradually finding out what role suits him best in midfield and how he can knit his strengths together. One thing that has been noticeable in all the games I've seen is how involved he is, even if it doesn't always come off he's in the thick of the game.

My Benfica mate was saying that there were two Benfica's this season.

One without Sanchez, who were lagging behind and getting beaten by Sporting for laughs and the team with Sanchez. A completely different team since he's been brought into it.

Another decent game. Dint see a lot of the ball, used the ball well and made a couple of driving runs which got Benfica 20/30 yards up the pitch.
I have to say once again, he's ability to protect the ball in the middle of the pitch is quite something. Reminds me of Spurs' Dembele. Quite often Vidal and Thiago were on him and they still couldn't get it off him.

I like Lingard but he doesn't belong in that conversation. That nitpicking aside there is a bit of a good base of young players. Ducker seems to like this guy then.
He was at the Portugal-Belgium game and spoke to a Benfica official who said we were still in negotiations. This is as far back as a month ago.

Yea, Lingard is a limited player and shouldn't be considered a good young talent. Lingard has potential to be a good squad player for us though, and I don't mind him being part of our squad for years to come. But he doesn't have the talent to be a regular for a top side.

I feel pretty certain that we'll sign Renato Sanches this summer. There have been too many rumors from too many sources (even though Portuguese sources have a history of BS) and the biggest clue has to be Renato Sanches following us on instagram, right? After all, instagram has confirmed transfers for us in the past.

Watched the second half after the United game and was impressed again.

People seem to think he's in the same age bracket as the others... They don't realize he's turning 24 this year and isn't exactly young anymore.

Switch him with Januzaj if it makes you feel better. He would still be part of the basis of a young team. He's 23.

I have seen the guy for maybe 7 or 8 games this season and although I only watched the second half yesterday I thought it was the worst game I have seen him in. Says a little about the level the boy has been playing at this season.

In the Cl match thread i said he was average and today portuguese newspapers had the same opinion. The "O Jogo" newspaper that's usually the most fair and balanced gave him a 5 from 0 to 10. Said he missed too many passes and had difficulty helping the defensive work and supporting the attack. They did say that he improved in the final minutes of the game but it was an average performance. Anyways for an 18 year old, having his first professional season (playing very demanding matches such as in these last two weeks) he is definitely having a positive campaign and deserves praise.

Interesting.

I hope we aren't signing an 18 year old to be a week-in, week-out first teamer - if we are actually after him.

What sort of fee is being touted?

Well obviously we wouldn't be. Even with Ronaldo Fergie tried to rest him regularly when he was a teenager. Personally I think Sanches is good enough to get in our first XI but it's not like he's head and shoulders above Schneiderlin, Carrick, Schweini etc. The intention would be that he becomes so in the future.

I know what you are saying here but wouldn't we have said the same about the Martial transfer before he came here. There is no way people thought he would be playing week in week out and being our most important player most weeks before he came.

Sooner take the gamble and buy young potential then the stupid transfer policy of buying the late 20 aged hand-me-downs of Spanish football teams.

oh, Lingard is much better than people give him credit for. If we had depay on the back of his shirt, not sure people would have the same assessment of him. I'm amazed how we always covert other teams players but are so negative of our own. I've watched Danny in a Arsenal shirt, and since coming back from injury been a big player for them this season. They absolutely stole him from us.

Obviously Martial was going to play week in week out and Sanches will too wherever he plays.

It wasn't me that said he wasn't just the poster I quoted said he didn't want him to. I am not too sure Martial was bought as someone to play week in week out he just played that well it necessitated playing him all the time.

From the Bayern game.
Just think what the much superior Ekangamene would do to those poor Germans.

I disagree. If Rooney and Depay did their job than Martial would have been the cover/competitor of one/both of them. If we sign him Renato would be in the same circumstances (if Bastian-Herrera-Schneiderlin do well he will be a reserve).

We're relying more on the likes of Martial, Rashford and probably Sanches (if we sign him) because the first team are a let down.

Not at all. He is starting because he is good enough. Do you think delle alli started only because Spurs didn't have anyone else?
