Like many I haven't been impressed by his YouTube videos but he oozes quality and he's been very impressive in this first half. Disciplined positionally, Passes at a fast tempo, can drive forward with the ball, is strong, fast and only 18. Benfica's best player tonight.

I love him and I want him! Going to be an absolute star, I'm certain of it.
Good to read some positive reviews. If we're signing him of course.

Impressive performance from him, he really stood his ground against one of the best teams around and showed what a quality player he is.

Yeah completely different type of opposition so in that regard today's performance is a much better indicator of his quality.

The maturity and composure he showed on the ball and off tonight was really impressive IMO, for 18 years old he was the boss in that midfield as his partner was invisible.

Didn't meant it like that? Playing against Bayern is the toughest match of his career I think. Tells a lot about his quality and character if he's impressing in that match.

Definitely, you wouldn't guess he was 18 watching that performance, he's so strong and disciplined that it allowed Benfica to play 2 strikers away at Bayern, that is unusual. Plus he used the ball really sharply and accurately when he had the chance.

Wait, why does this guy have 28 pages in redcafe?

His pressing in the second half was outstanding, and he continued to move the ball at a fantastic tempo accurately when he got it. Always one and two touch, unless he had space where he could drive forward which was rare because of Bayern's pressing but he did it really well a few times. Perhaps most impressively considering his age is he looked like a leader, he was constantly berating team mates for going long too soon and encouraging everyone around him. He showed numerous qualities tonight, he really does look like the complete package.

Linked with a transfer to United a few times.
Oh yeah, I've already read a bit of the first page. I've been so unatentive this season that I didn't know about this. Knew there was a thread on him but never expected it to be this big. :D

A huge chunk of the thread is either people convinced he's absolute shite, or arbitrary comparisons to young players who don't play in his position doing well - Sane, Dembele, Martial, Bazoer, Tielemans (who has actually had a poor season) etc...

A Bola are a mess. It was like they were being paid by Gaitan's agent.

Wouldn't be the first time. They were the ones who made a cover about Bebé sprouting immense interest in Madrid. This was when Mendes had just made a deal with Bebé on which he started owning 30% of his pass. Bebé only had third-tier experience in Portugal and was an unknown.

It worked then, as someone bit the bait a couple of weeks later, so why wouldn't they keep on trying?

I thought he had a good game but Bayern was really awful. He and Vidal were probably the best players on the pitch.

He has been very heavily linked to us all season and supposedly we tried to buy him in the Jan window. He looked decent tonight and Owen Hargreaves was creaming himself over him, that said he gets very effusive about players quite easily.

And people saying that he looks talented but that 40m isn't a serious price tag for a 18 years old with 6 months of football.

Don't think anybody has said that and various posters have pointed it out. It's whether he's actually as good as the hype suggests that is questioned.

If we do end up buying him he needs the right partner brought in for him as well, preferably an older playmaker, but the beauty would be that we should be free to use a #10 or second striker in most games given how much ground he covers.

Exactly my opinion. I'm a Sporting fan but i don't deny that the kid got talent. He may end up being worth alot of money but like you said he got half a season of portuguese football. It's only natural that some people are skeptical.

If we haven't agreed a transfer already, then his transfer fee probably just went up by 5-10 million euros.

He's been doing that sort of work all season though, tonight isn't just a flash in the pan. He usually has even more to his game going forward too, but you can tell he was told to keep back and stay tight.

I'm glad people have watched him in a proper match now, you can get much more of a feel watching a natural game than Chopped up footage.

he in my eyes would be perfect in a 433 formation for us.

There is skepticism and there is also a blatant disregard of what he also brings to the table.
For his age, the responsibility he shoulders in this team warrants the hype. I personally don't like hype around young players but we shouldn't tempering it by pointing out flaws that are non existent.
Btw he seem to be getting better with the hype and experience. Even in games he is not putting in beastly displays, he does a solid enough job. CMs at this age don't tend to have this same level of consistency. He might never be the superstar but he has a good football head on him.

he's arguably been Benfica's best player this season so I don't think today makes much of a difference. Most of the Portugese journalists say we have agreed a price with Benfica. The issue is how that fee will be paid and what kind of clauses will be installed. I'm pretty confident he'll be a United player in the summer. he's even started following us on Instagram ffs.

Just shows the caf once again that you don't write off a player because of one or two videos.

Somebody said they saw more in charni ekangamene and Ben Pearson ffs.

Certain types of players inevitably stand out in midfield battles against a tiki taka team. Wanyama was another one in days gone by.

Can you not just give him credit for a good performance? It's BS to say every player of a certain style would stand out against a team like Bayern.

I didn't watch the match and I have no opinion on the player.

And I didn't say that. I just expressed caution on reading too much into this game. Wanyama was world class for a while on this forum.

And Chelsea until he found himself rotated more and more last season under Mourinho. He was instrumental in their Champions League and Europa League triumphs.

Yeah, comparing a player with Ramires isn't an insult. Personally I think that his level is closer to Enzo Perez who imo was very good for Benfica.

He was Benfica's best player on the pitch. The rest of his teammates were very wasteful in the final third. Showed no composure and tried countless flicks that never came off. Sanches kept it simple and direct. Benfica's only real chance in the second half came from a move started by Sanches. I was impressed

In fairness Bayern didn't play that style, it was more about getting it out wide and trying to get it in for Muller, Lewandowski and the runs of Vidal. Sanches didn't impress from a workrate or physical aspect tonight, his positioning and composed and accurate use of the ball were impressive for an 18 year old IMO.
