I watched him yesterday and I can't say I saw anything special. Probably why I'm not a footballing scout, but I can't see what the hype is all about.

Last night wasn't really a game to show any tricks or flair, but he did a huge amount of dirty work. For a kid of 18 to be doing so much work and helping them control midfield is huge.

He could basically be what we were hoping schneiderlin would be - but actually comfortable on the ball and not afraid to bring the ball forward.

Kid is dope by the caseload. Loved that tackle last night and his passing is terrific.

They are two different types of midfielders. Schneiderlin is your stay at home defensive midfielder (at Benfica, it's Samaris' job) whereas Sanches is more dynamic box-to-box. We could replicate that Benfica's midfield by pairing them together. Renato does have a good shot range also.

he's defensive version of Anderson who can shoot, sign him up, if not, make that player from Fosu-Mensah

If you saw schneiderlin regularly at Southampton he was a box to box player, got forward regularly. Only for us does he seem to sit back and not move - LVG orders clearly.

He played deep yesterday and although he didn't do anything special, he had a big influence on the game. Dominated the midfield. Think he had the most touches and passes yesterday. Also covered a lot of ground.

People forget he's 18 I think.

Not many 18 year olds who would play such a role in a CL tie. Doing what he did last night for a 30 year old would go unnoticed and people would just say "tidy performance". Just because we're linked with him, people expect some form of performances that include an assist/goal/shots on target/tackle every minute.

He did alright and was one of the few players along with Jonas and Lindelof who didn't get criticized. I was reading Benfica's forum and they were ripping apart Gaitán's performance. I agree with @Hernandez - BFA, it was a competent performance from him which deserves praise since he's an 18 year old playing in such important match. He continues to improve at an interesting rate.

Doing alright for an 18 year old but there isn't too much special about his performances to suggest the hype. Any 18 year old playing in a big side will always get the kind of attention whether they are of the special breed or not.
And knowing Portuguese clubs, it's always in their best interest to field a young talent to jack his price up more.

I've always said that the hype was ridiculous (60/80 million offers) i was just addressing his performance last night. I've also said that he has to prove himself in portuguese football in order to deserve a big club move. He hasn't showed enough at the moment. It's just the usual overhyping of Benfica youth players. Just look at Gonçalo Guedes who doesn't even play atm. Even so his evolution has been pretty clear and he has alot of potencial (just not in the moulds our overhyping media claims)

Sorry Sly, I was not referring to your post directly just making reference to the general view of posts lately. Your recent post is spot on too!

And Anderson Talisca, wasnt he supposed to be the next .... He is doing decent but not justifying the hype about him last season.

I know Benfica's players are often overhyped but I think Sanches is the real deal.

Yeah, what happened with Talisca? He was hyped by Mourinho a while ago, but it seems like he's been warming Benfica's bench for a while.

This is going to be a rip off, steer clear.
How can you be so sure? This is what you said about Martial:
I don't even see this massive potential are on about. He can dribble, a bit. He's kind of fast, hasn't shown any of the offensive intelligence needed to be a superstar attacker. This truly is a waste of club funds and if we keep this up we won't be getting to the pinnacle of the european club game in a long time.

For some reason I want a name like Sanches to end with a z, not an s.

martial was a reaction to a massive transfer, this kid isn't worth even 20 million quid. Anyways, its far easier to judge young midfielders than it is to judge young attackers.
