Reece Oxford

I think affinity to youth players is dangerous at times, and frankly a bit odd. I'll explain.

Oxford is what, 16/17. The day he signs, he'd be a United player, a United young player at that, and we'll then want the best one to play. The cycle will then repeat itself the next year if we are linked to a promising young player in his position. People will say that they don't want player x, they want Oxford to get more chances instead, and so on and so forth.

Without checking the thread again, I am almost certain posters didn't want us to sign Martial on the basis that they prefer Wilson to play. Well, they are both United players now, and nobody wants Wilson to play instead.

Essentially, and this may not directly translate to Oxford vs TFM - but there is almost a tendency to say 'don't sign player x, he is better than player y, which means y won't play'. Players come and go. Most of the youngsters people have been attached to are youngsters who themselves were brought in from other clubs and replaced youngsters who were here before them. So in reality, not a big deal if Adnan or Andreas don't get to play, they both came in from elsewhere themselves, and if we played Sane instead, who may just be better than Adnan, we wouldn't care within two games.

I can understand the attachment to Manchester kids or players we have seen grow up here since kids, but other than that, they were all new players here themselves once before we got attached. Same will happen with other players.

Yeah that's why I said I'm biased. We're not involved in the decision making process so we don't have to care that much about how affinity to youth players can harm the team's prospect, and I certainly won't riot if we sign Oxford. Although even an unbiased side of me thinks TFM is better and Williams is on par with Oxford (not trying to claim that I can judge players better than professional scouts).

Oxford is certainly one of the best English talents around that age that wasn't at a top club already though. Would be perfect if he's a midfielder.

Yea that's fair. To be honest, while I'm not an expert on Oxford, I would struggle to believe he is better than TFM either.

If the press is to believed he is pushing for a new bumper contract at West Ham. Don't know if he has his head in the right place if I am being honest

New stadium for West Ham - lots of talk about them becoming a much bigger club and able to compete financially at a much higher level so I think its fair enough that he and his agent believe that they can probably negotiate a decent deal.

That's fair enough, but according to the metro he is asking for 40k a week which is slightly excessive for a 17 year old. Might just be the usual press rubbish though

Don't think we need another teenage CB personally, Williams and Tuanzebe coming through the academy look good and Timbo is already in the mix.

Can never have too many good young players. By the way, I think he tends to play more defensive mid?

Martin Lipton saying the same as well.

Hmm cannot have too many good young defenders i guess, but we have a fair collection coming through our own ranks as well.

Don't really want him, he plays in the same position as TFM and so would rather focus on him whilst bringing in another world class CM if Mourinho feels the need to.

For me there is every chance Williams could still be turned into a right-back moving forward. He is incredibly rapid and still a bit too rash at times, he will fly in to press attackers taking him self well out of position and leaving spaces in behind him.

Surely he'd find it easier to get into West Hams team?

If we are willing to spend 10m on him, we must feel he is ready to have a role in the first team.

English talents are very welcome!

That's a lot of money for such an unproven player, especially when we've got some talented young players here already.

We should be looking for quality established players to supplement what we already have.

Is he actually that good? I mean, he had a cracking game against Arsenal but didn't really look ready for first team football after that. And we already seem to be stacked on highly rated young CB's/DM's.

If Phil Jones leaves, Oxford would be a solid replacement imo.

Is he any better than Poole?

If Jones leaves, we should be looking at someone with more experience. Jones played more than twice the minutes Oxford has this season, which says all you need to know about him at this early stage. He's clearly too raw to be playing regular Premier League football, let alone for a club of our aspirations.

Besides, we've got several promising youngsters of our own. Fosu-Mensah has looked excellent during his stints in the first team, whilst the likes of Tuanzebe and Williams could potentially step up.

We should look at a experienced defender no matter what, but that doesn't mean we can't add Oxford too.

Tbh i haven't watched Oxford besides that Arsenal game, but judging from that he is very mature for his age and physical capable to handle the PL already.

I don't know how close Williams or Tuanzebe is to be part of the first team, but Fosu Mensah can play CB, RB, DM and CM, so there would still be lots of game time for him if Oxford joined.

Smalling, Manolas, Rojo, Oxford as the CB options would be good.

How does he play? Good passer, strong, great at winning headers, ball playing CB.. etc?

The best 2 CBs this country has ever seen came from West Ham youth academy. They had more talent in their right toe then all our homegrown defenders put together throughout the SAF's reign. Just saying...

He's pretty decent as far as I can remember, there was a lot of hype about him a while ago but he's got a lot of potential and if he's available for around 10m (£7m for Bebe) then why not.

Must be something in this, as we've been linked to him for the last three months.

My guess is is that if we are interested in him and one of Manolas or Stones that we might see a couple or more of our poor defenders moved on: Jones, Rojo, McNair all possible.
