RedCafe's Top 50 Albums

Spice Girls and Westlife did make great albums. Just ask the millions and millions of fans all over the world who bought their albums. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it bad. And I'm sure that many of those who did buy Westlife albums don't approve of your taste, and they are just as right about you, as you are about them.

Millions of people supported Nazism does that make it right? Millions of people supported Bush too.

Bands like Westlife and the Spice Girls are so successful because of the marketing and image that they have behind them.

Up to post 117 I was gonna let you in, but after reading the following you've got fecking no chance.

So who's gonna be first up? Nomes?

Mine's almost complete, but I wanna see some others first so I can pilfer (plus, the first one always gets picked to shreds)

I not far off finishing mine, I'll post when It's done, couldn't care less what people think I will stand by every pick I've made.

It's a varied list, there will be "classics" that I have missed off mainly because they are not albums I am into and as such can't justify putting them in ahead of others that I think should be there. This doesn't mean that I am saying they are bad albums though, for example Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gay, David Bowie, Prince etc are all exceptional artists but not ones that I tend to listen to so they won't be put in my list ahead of something that I think is equally great.

I hope I have explained myself well enough.

Nazism turned out to be shit in rear view, but Germany was in ruins financially before Hitler. He wiped out unemployment and made Germany a role model for other countries before he turned into a genocidal feckhead.

I agree that most of Spice Girls' and Westlife's success was built on marketing. But people didn't just buy their albums and threw them away. I bet even you know the lyrics to some of their songs.
There is a lot of shit bands that get unfairly pushed by the media and vice versa. Elvis has an album called "50.000.000 Elvis fans can't be wrong" and Bon Jovi released an album a few years ago called "500.000.000 Bon Jovi fans can't be wrong"... they might be wrong according to you and me, but I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with us.

The marketing angle of the music industry is a whole other discussion in itself. They are more clever now you see :)

I think that's exactly what they expect. Such a list is purely subjective, and rightly should be. If I were to make a list, it would pretty much be from 1990 until now, because that's when I started to listen to music. I 100% respect people who put Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin on their lists, but I don't know them very well, so they wouldn't make my list (I think you have to experience the era to get the full experience). With all due respect of course.

This is where your argument (or fishing, which i suspect is what it is) falls down. I`ve heard Westlife et al, i wonder what percentage of their fans have sat through Lift your skinny fists to heaven like antennas. Most Westlife fans aren`t passionate about music, they just want a good tune sang by prettyboys. By your rationale Eastenders is better than The Sopranos.

Notice you didn't mention Bush, everyone knew he was a feckup and still they gave him another term, there are countless episodes in history where people have been wrong on mass

I agree that most of Spice Girls' and Westlife's success was built on marketing. But people didn't just buy their albums and threw them away. I bet even you know the lyrics to some of their songs.

I do know some of their lyrics but only the ones incessantly played on the radio, there is a difference between catchy and quality. Mr. Blobby made a catchy and successful song.....

i'm not saying everyone should agree, otherwise we would be living in your world of the most successful has to be the best

it is but it's also an important factor that can't be ignored

I dug up some facts on wiki (yes I know it isn't the most reliable but it's all I could find). Ricky Martin - Ricky Martin claims to have sold over 20million copies, more than the Beatles - White album, more than Led Zeppelin II.

See now we are in a whole other ball park. The American market was hungering for something new when Ricky Martin came along. He opened the American market for a Latino invasion of sorts. Next thing we knew, you could spot Spanish titles in the Hot 100. If he wasn't the first to introduce Latino to the US market, then it would be someone else who sold those 20 million albums, and who now would be the butt of your joke.

It isn't always the most innovative that make it in the business. Never have been. Early pop musicians Beethoven and Mozart played main stream music and didn't add anything but beautiful works. The only innovation Mozart contributed to his legacy was the tuba.

I can't believe we're talking about fecking Ricky Martin, Boyzone, Westlife, Spice Grls etc in this thread.

To say I am disturbed would be an understatement.

Oh and a new rule, anyone putting any of the above mentioned "artists" in there lists will have said list voided :p

I'm going to make a list too. Simply because my musical taste is better than yours.

Spammy put a shout out for you to be involved, and since I respect Spammys tastes you are now part of the panel.

If your list sucks I will hold Spammy personnally responsible.

Didn't Gloria estefan do that much earlier than Ricky Martin? Carlos Santana isn't the butt of my jokes either. Ricky Martin is however because he is overly successful for his talents.

I know very little on classical works so I can't make a statement on this.

So like Nearco said, is Eastenders better than the sopranos?

Thank you :)

Shouldn't have a problem naming 50 albums, but putting them in order will be a bollocks.

Sorry nomey I feel responsible for bringing the tone of this thread down :(

How's your list going? Got any recommendations?I'm off to uni in a bit and need something to listen to on the train.

It's putting these feckers in order that is giving me brain ache, so hard to get right (not that there is a right or wrong but you know what I mean)

I've listed some earlier in the thread, but if you haven't heard Leftism by Leftfield or Entroducing by DJ Shadow give these a go, both stunning albums. What sort of stuff are you into?

Why don't you ask me

I also want to clear up, that I neither like Spice Girls nor Westlife. I was merely making a point.

Dennis Pop and Max Martin are/were the Desmond Child of the 90's and early 00's.

getting Leftfield now, having a bit of trouble finding dj shadow but i'll have a proper search later. I'll listen to anything really any age, any type as long as it's good, for instance i'm listening to Paul Simon now but earlier I had Dizzee Rascal on.

Don't listen to Ricky martin though

I've got Joy Division - Closer on at the moment, brilliant stuff.

You got any Portishead? If not get Dummy.

I've been meaning to get that for ages, i'm sure my sister had it when I was a youngster it is on it's way to my hard drive now.

I'm up to about 40 on my list now, haven't even got the beatles in there yet though

Hey, that was taken out of context. :nono:

your top 50 will be disregarded, thank god

If there is no criteria, and the list is objective top 50 selling albums are the natural selection. If it is subjective then everyone is entitled to their own personal top 50, where there is no right and no wrong. End of.

I am going to kill you all if "All Wrapped up" by The Undertones is not on the list

The Undertones is actually quite cool, but i don't think they'll make it into my list though. I'm going to have a hard time figuring out only 50 albums but i know what album i'm gonna have as number 1.

I love the Backstreet Boys. they are my favourite ever!! their music, lyrics and voices are so touching and beautiful. their latest album (Unbreakable) was just amazing.. I just can`t get enough of it. also, I still listen to their old albums of the 90s. not because they are pretty faces and singing pop music, will make you say that they don`t have any talent :smirk:
